This is an idea out of left field... VERY out of left field... does anyone think it's possible Shane Warne deliberately sabotaged his own cricket career?
After 12 years of extensive touring, both here and abroad, here's a bloke who would not have seen very much of his family. He is expected to be a role model for millions of other people's kids, at the expense of his own. His behaviour at times has shown he may not be the ideal role model, so maybe that's an extra bit of pressure he's been expected to live up to and is out of his depth at maintaining a clean-cut image.
How does a champion cricketer, in very good form, tell his personal sponsors and teams that he doesn't have the heart to go on? What contractual obligations might he have to fulfil? How does he get out of it?
Taking a banned substance is probably an automatic two year ban. Trying to excuse it with a half-arsed story about ignorance doesn't eradicate the guilt or the ban, but may (in his eyes) avoid the slur of being a (performance enhancing) drugs cheat. Suspended but only partly disgraced, much less ignominy than would be suffered for a positive steroid result.
Financially I suspect he would be very much set for life. No need to play on.... besides, after a few years off there's always the media to turn to.
Whether it be a two year break or a permanent one, does anyone think Warne may have had this in mind when taking the "one tablet"?
