Great player, no doubt.

But quite a few people rate him alongside the legends of the game, do you think he was that good?

Not at the level of Carey, Ablett, Matthews but not far below.

And to answer your question, no he is not overrated, the amount of games Essendon won just by his sheer determination was in the 100's.

I'm not sure which Essendon player said it but they said "When James Hird plays you have an extra 5 players out on the ground, players lifted just by his presence"

These sort of players don't come along very often.

Great player...match-winner. Inspired plenty of wins for the Bombers (much to the detriment of the team I follow)....

Definitely not over-rated.

maybe your asking this because you haven't seen enuff of him play ?

James wasnt brute force like Carey etc but seemed like he could will the ball...

I remember his first few games, i was like look at this lazy, hands on his hips rookie, walking around the HFF that >>>> just keeps getting the ball again and again lol.... it was kinda fun watching him before his Brownlow as he was slightly unknown except to bomber fans.

I doubt that he won two B & F before he won the brownlow

He was an old-fashioned footballer. Didn't have the speed, wasn't a great kick, but he knew how to read the play, was tough, used the ball very well and had a great goal sense. Also was pretty much the coach of the team as well as the captain when he was on the ground. Just went wherever he was needed. I remember him first as a CHF, then he had the foot problems and they put him as a ruck-rover, then he was a HF again, then a HB. I think he could still be playing today if they left him in a forward pocket.

Essendon has had some great players over the years and i have been lucky to see some of them from the late fifties till now

I saw

Jack Clarke
Ken Fraser
Barry Davis
Simon Maddern
Tim Watson
Gavin Wanganeen
Michael Long
Terry Daniher

I didnt see but was told about

Albert Thurgood
John Coleman
Bill Hutchison
Dick Reynolds

Hird was the best i ever saw at The Bombers

Hird is indeed a legend of our game

Excuse me? Is this a joke? No doubt he was a legend of the game. Had the complete package. I cannot believe this topic is even being entertained.

Welcome to BF. The injuries the bloke went through, the foot in 99 the smashed face and the way he returned and performed indeed the man is a legend. No question.

Wayne Carey and James Hird are the best players I have ever seen in the flesh.

Chris Judd could be better than both of them if he could sustain his 2004/2005 form.

Past legends ALWAYS become overrated as more time goes by.

Wayne Carey is seen as 'better and better' as every 10 years goes by.
That's what a legend is.

James Hird will also be seen as 'better and better' as every 10 years goes by.
That's what a legend is.

So take this into consideration when comparing past players.

Anyone that says James Hird is overrated never watched him play. He is right up their with Carey, Voss, Archer as one of the most courageous plays to ever play the game.....and, I don't even like Essendon.

Depends, I would take

Carey/Voss/Buckley/Riccuto ahead of him, however if you needed a game-breaker there was none better. Not saying these blokes didnt pull their team across the line because they all did, many times.

Slightly over-rated

hird is definitely a champion of the game. He has made comebacks from tough injuries and broken games open. Hird is also a brownlow medalist, norm smith medalist and triple anzac day medalist he definitely ranks up there with the greats.:)

you have to be kidding....

the fact that Hird was cut down with serious injury numerous times in his prime is just plain scary, had he of been injury free he could of been the best ever, no question.

if anyone wants a good read, James Hird "reading the play" is truly inspirational.

BECAUSE VOSS RICCUTO AND BUCKLEY NEVER EVER HAD INJURY PROBLEMS WHICH CAUSED THEIR CAREERS TO BE CUT SHORT!

Idiot.
