For the past few weeks i have been watching Layckock rather closely, and I can't help but notice his extreme lack of pace. Although he often shows flashes of brilliance he is just so incredably slow. As a result of this clear flaw in his game whenever he plays in the ruck, not only do we never win the tap, but the opposing ruckman seems to dominate. We need somehow to improve this fault, and perhaps it is time to consider replacing Laycock.

Re: Is Layckock up to it???

He's a average backup ruckman, dont think he will ever be better to be honest.

We all have un realistic expectations of Layock.

Re: Is Layckock up to it???

I think Laycock's tap work has been pretty good. He always threatens to take a grab down forward, in the first qrt today they just didn't stick.

Probably needs to do more around the ground to become more of an influential player.

Re: Is Layckock up to it???

He also seems to be a bit of a confidence player.

He confidence was down today and hence dropped some marks...

Re: Is Layckock up to it???

We still don't know if he'll develop the consistency to be a really good player.

He should play every game this year and if he's not doing it by the end of the year we should seriously look at trading for a ruckman.

Re: Is Layckock up to it???

He has had an ordinary start to the season but what worries me most is that Hille and Laycock were beaten by Blake and West

They beat Brogan and Lade last week , and I thought Hille was pretty decent today

Re: Is Layckock up to it???

I'm starting to think he will never be much good.

I've made a lot of excuses for him over the years and i'm not writing him off yet, but there are worrying signs emerging and he is starting to look like he will be nothing more than a below average ruckman.

Re: Is Layckock up to it???

I seriously reckon we should try Bellchambers. From what i have heard he had a very disappointing draft week, and he was a pretty good pick up for us. His best is apparently very good and he is quite sharp. I would love to see him in the next few weeks perhaps as Laycock replacement.

Re: Is Layckock up to it???

You just don't know with Jason.

There's times when you think he could be an All-Australian ruckman one day, and others where he just doesn't look an AFL footballer by any stretch.

He looked slow and his hands weren't sticky today, but he wasn't helped by some pretty ordinary delivery and outnumbered contests.

I'll continue to wait and see, but let's hope it's not for too much longer.

I was thinking this myself today. I was really hoping (and still am) that this was going to be a Big year for Laycock.

Re: Is Layckock up to it???

Last year was a big improvement year for him. He has been very dissapointing in the last 2 weeks i agree but suggestions such as playing Bellchambers are very premature. I think that now that Scotty has gone down we really need to play Neagle or Johns down in the forwardline. To rely on Laycock or Hille at fullforward or CHF (depending on where lloydie is playing) is not going to work. Sure they can both take a grab and chip in with goals for us but only really when they are looked at as a bonus drifting down every now and then. We are looking to them to often and neither are genuine forwards. Who knows maybe Johns and Lloyd will work better than Lucas and Johns in 06/07?

Re: Is Layckock up to it???

I'm not really sure anymore. I thought this year would be a breakout season for him seeing as he had his best preseason at the club. But he just looks like he's struggling out there..

Hopefully we've found a talent in Bellchambers.

I watched Bellchambers in the pre-season game against WCE .. and IMO he is at least a year away from league footy.

I would stick with Laycock for now. But would like to see Paddy get a run at some stage.

Yeah of course he is. no doubt about it. he just had one of those days.
haha coming from you david hille..
ive said it plenty of times before
david hille is NOT a ruckmen. he along with Josh Fraser are the worst ruckmen in the competition. on days like today is where he should be playing at CHF
Yes, Paddy Ryder was excellent today on Mooney but he is our ideal ruckmen. Big Leap great tap work. Johns played well at CHB yesterday for Bendigo. Why not just try it. Also got Tom Bellchambers who is on the senior list who was awesome for Bendigo as well yesterday

One of the underlying factors that Hille & Laycock struggled is because they spent very little time on the pine. They appeared to rotate virtually the whole game between ruck and CHF and neither of them have the engine (let's face it, beside from Dean Cox who has??) to do it. While Lucas is out you guys need a CHF and Laycock/Hille isn't the answer. Not sure how far away Gumby and Neagle are but someone needs to step up over the next few weeks.

Paddy Ryder is a freak. He was outstanding today on Mooney, his closing speed and massive leap make him a perfect CHB. For him to spend more time in the ruck he'd need to add some decent muscle (so not to get easily pushed and shoved at stoppages around the ground) and with that he would probably lose some of his spring and agility. Perhaps a cameo up forward might be worth a try.
