We won’t finish bottom 4 but I would give anything for another pick 5-6.

Aside from the injury derailed careers of Scharenberg and Freeman... Hine has nailed every top 10 pick. De Goey, Stephenson, Moore (f/s)

There needs to be a club ban on trading out 1st rd picks.

Let’s pump multiple remaining games into T Brown, Quaynor, Murphy, Bianco, Rantall, Atu, Keane, etc.?

That’s not tanking. It’s investing in the future. And it’s not as though playing the Varcoe, Reid, Mayne, Thomas, Dunn etc is making us much more competitive. We’ve been losing with those players. Might as well lose with the kids

We then finish 12th and take a good 1st rd pick, Reef and trade Cox out for a player who can play a role e.g zippy small forward or an experienced KPP.

And roll the dice again in 2021

*curls up in the foetal position*

We gave up four first round picks to add... *checks notes*... Treloar to our midfield. And you think trading is the answer to our problems?

Well isn't that the currency you have to either get players into the club or improve your draft position. What other currency do you know about??

Did l mention trading away high draft picks?
I actually said "There are alot of moneyball players out there that can solve some of the teams deficiencies, it's just a matter if the recruiting department and list manager are shrewd enough to find them!!"

I’d prefer we just made astute selections at the draft. Many of the league’s top midfielders were not top-10 picks;

Luke Shuey pick #20
Tim Kelly #24
Nat Fyfe #20
Pat Cripps #13
Zach Merrett #26
Isaac Smith #19
Luke Parker #40
Taylor Adams #13
Elliott Yeo #30
Lachie Neale #58
Sam Menegola #66

Etc. etc. We need to make better picks and develop them, not trade the world away.

Exactly, that is what l was saying...

Well, I think you need to look to history to give you a bit of an insight. This is not a bad team, from a pure talent point of view, probably the best we have had in my 50 years on the planet. There are no players who can't kick, all are skilled, not something you typically associate with the Pies, who are normally tough, dour types with some stars.

So back to history, a lot of flag sides have risen into the top 8/4 looked like they were nearly there only to have a really bad year and look busted. But that year hardens them and then the flag comes:

1. Richmond, (most recent) - made finals only to fall away in 2016. Rest is history.

2. West Coast lose badly to Hawthorn 2015, fall away, flag in 2018

3. Cats - fall away 2006, flag 2007.

Just a couple of examples, yeah we have some issues but getting a good run with injuries would go a long way to solving our problems. The only year I can recall having few injury problems was 2010, post that we have been cursed.

Our defence is strong (with Howe), but our midfield is dropping off bar Adams, and our forward line bar degoey is c grade. We aren’t going to suddenly challenge again next year. We have a lot of issues and for some reason supporters can’t see it. Take a good look at our list, a good look, and you will see. Bottom 8 players are poor. Sidey, pendles ageing, treloar always injured. Forward line with ruckmen... Thomas? Brown?... not to
Mention how many of our forwards can kick 40m?

We also don’t have any depth. Hopefully we can address this in the next two drafts but don’t expect us to suddenly challenge for a flag next year.

We were worse off in 2018 re injuries. Most sides have weaknesses, only one who does not IMO is West Coast, strong all over the field.

Richmond won a flag with one decent tall forward, no second ruck and one gun tall defender and a hell of a lot of role players in 2017. Since then they have added a few good players with only one via trade and the rest developed internally. We really need Stephenson to get up on the wing and for Quaynor to come on as a running defender. Maybe Langdon comes good, that would help (Grimes looked done at the Tigers with hammies at one stage).

Our biggest problem is injuries, year after year, not just to establised players but also to our emerging talent, Qaynor misses last year, Will Kelly this year as an example. It slows their development.

My other major concern is the coach, but that's for another thread but both Bomber Thompson and Hardwick had a similar view on their abilities after the step back year.

Cue in the rack for this year. This season is a joke anyway finish 13th get Pick 6, trade next years first for another first this year. Trade for McDonald, and Brown, how much would Sexton cost? Would fit in well in our fwdline. Phillips for Constable and a pick./pick upgrade. Plenty others can be used for trade bait.

Bring in 3 first rounders including Reef. Then draft best available key forward and small crumbing fwd after that.

By all reports we won’t need to give up the equivalent of a first for Reef. Was considered late first, early second before the injury.

You can not possibly say this side is more talented than 2010/2011.

Not even in the same postcode.

The club is in a deep funk but we're just a few smart decisions (coupled with a bit of luck) away from on-field success.

Not to understate how difficult these decisions can be to make especially within the confines of the CFC.
You said something similar about the virus and Victoria, though in retrospect rather than as a forward looking hope. We just need a Big Ears at the Pies to bring your hopes undone! ;)

Really, have a look at some of the foot skills in that side. It was better coached and had virtually no injuries. That is the key difference.
Our 2010/11 sides were a lot better than this. Our mids kicked goals, and we were much better balanced across the ground, EVERYONE performed their role and there were no passengers. There’s no comparison

Imagine this going forward, the 2018 GF lineup with a few changes below. Flip a borderline out for mine. Cox and WHE Just hanging on. Jury out on Ruscoe and Kelly for mine.
