Can't get ultimate success for himself unless he's still there, and doing this makes it more likely.

If they're a 70% chance of finals next year anyway, but 80% with these top ups, then it makes him that much more likely to be coaching next year.

Of course, the experience, leadership and teaching of their teammates they bring will be the parts the PR machine will focus on.
Buckley's never really done this, and you could say his job was looking to be in jeopardy this year too, so I don't see that as the reason myself.

Maric is obviously not going to be a pick up to "improve our team" and top up for finals. He'll be a quasi-coach who is there to help mentor Grundy and Witts if he stays. Same as Hudson. Nothing to do with Buckley wanting to keep his job.

You are spot on the money. It 100% a development selection to assist your younger players - good bloke for the job.

Don't need to be Einstein to see the Pies were one of the youngest clubs last year, and now add the departures of Cloke, Swan, Toovey, Caff and possibly Brown, you need some of it back. As free agents they are not costing draft selections, which we need to keep.

Also, Pies fans have been critical the club doesn't have a proper ruck coach. Maric will do the role of a Ben Hudson a few years ago. Mentor the likes of Grundy and be backup in case he gets hurt. Would be a laugh if he chose Collingwood over Richmond, given they are also wanting him for a coaching role.

I see this as what the pies did with Ben Hudson couple of years ago. On field coaching role at VFL level and filling in when a Grundy or Witts go down.

Nothing wrong with it.
