"Hawthorn Football Club utility Jack Fitzpatrick has today announced his retirement from AFL football.

The 26 year-old, who has not played since suffering concussion in Round 8, has been advised by doctors to retire from the game.

“It’s unfortunate that I’m unable to play the game I love any longer, but I’m rapt to have had the opportunity to be a part of two great clubs,” Fitzpatrick said. "

A real shame that concussion has cut his career short. Showed a bit when he played for us and that goal on the run last year was excellent. Well done Jack all the best.

Disappointing that he has had to give the game away, I wish him all the best going forward. Was always going to be the way given how long he spent out in the last 2 years with concussion related issues.

Will always be a big fan of his after he kicked that 60m goal to save us from defeat against the Pies. Had the tools but unfortunately a lot didn't go right for him.

Got to play with the club he supports with the guys he idolised and kicked a ripper of a goal at the MCG against Collingwood no less. Besides winning a premiership, I think its safe to say he did what every supporter can only dream of.

Not surprised to hear this but disappointed, always liked him and thought he could have had a good few years with us. Despite his short career he made quite an impact with that goal though! I wish him all the best for the future.

Despite only playing a handful of games this guy clearly made an impact. Great to see the heartfelt wishes. I personally loved his steely eyed, non celebratory response to that match winning goal that got us into the finals. Cruel luck to have his career cut short, but as someone already mentioned the fact remains he got to live out the dream of playing AFL
