Jack Redden is one of the 2 high profile recruits (somewhat) we added to our list. I for one was a fan of recruiting redden (still am) as he strengthens our on ball brigade. At his best Redden is a B/+B grader thats great contested player and a tackling machine.

Like Jetta, Redden has struggled with adjusting to the side but he also missed the majority of the preseason through injury. Yet he has basically avoided any criticism and hasn't been dropped yet. Unlike Jetta, redden cost us more as we handed our first round pick (some players that went around the mark include, lovell, Dunkley, Collins and Tucker) to the lions.

This thread isn't meant to bash jack but more of a discussion about Jack's form. I understand due to his limited preseason he wont reach his best footy but im hoping he at least he reach the form that he displayed for brissy in his last couple of years for them.

As it stands, Redden Averages 17 touches (8 contested possessions), 5 tackles, 4 clearances and has kicked 5 goals. For a pure inside mid, his numbers are down but the biggest worry is that he isnt getting the footy as much.

A lot of People have mentioned that Priddis, Redden and Hutchings cannot play in one side and i agree. At the moment Hutchings and him are dissapointing but Hutching just has him covered as he is hitting the scoreboard more often and has stopped a couple of the opposition mids from having big games against us. For that reason alone i would keep hutchings in the side. I would love Simmo to drop Redden to the two's and get him used to accumulating the footy and being the clearance machine he is. Instead of Rushing him back like last time i would like to see Simmo make jack earn that spot with some dominating performances for the royals.

Once in the side i actually won't mind Redden given a soft tagging role on the oppositions best mids like Barlow, Mitchell, Coniglio and Robinson have been doing. I think Barlow is a perfect example for him to work his way. Like Redden, Barlow was seriously out of form and he was made to earn his spot back into the side and now thriving in a new role. Maybe Redden can start on a flank during a CBD and we go with Priddis, Shuey and yeo combo and during stoppages he mans up on his target.

I would say a pass mark for Redden in the second half of the season would be an average of 22 disposals, 5 clearances and 5 tackles a game.

He's avoided any criticism? Check out last weeks game day thread!

But yeah, hopefully the lack of preseason has held him back a bit and he'll get better in the back half of the year....

He's a average player with a low ceiling for mine pick 17 was overs... Brisbane got us back for Yeo ....

Very difficult with the type of injury he had and trying to fit into a new team at the same time.

That's an explanation for his poor form. I think the match committee should have played him in the WAFL at this point. Yes there are reasons for his form, but he's costing us on field at the moment. Hutchings to a lesser extent I think, and he showed some versatility with a tagging role last week that we could look into more.

I think you should leave analysing players to the big boys. Your 'analysis' is erroneous, both in grammar and content.

I have liked some of the defensive work he has been doing lik3 blocking and sticking strong tackles, his kicking has also been good just needs to get himself into the game more and get more ball. I will back him in to improve

You are exactly right about this. In the West Australian (and everywhere else), Jetta is always our "high prize recruit" who gets criticised each time he plays while Redden is hardly mentioned. To me our high prized recruit is the one we paid first rounder for and not the one we swapped our 3rd choice ruckman with. Jetta wasn't bad on the weekend; was certainly better than Redden (15D at 93.3 DE vs 16D at 50DE). Watched the 2nd and 3rd quarters again - the number of times Redden hand-balled directly to a Brisbane player was staggering. Redden (and Jetta to some extent) had no pre-season - should have played both him and Jetta in the WAFL at the beginning of the year.

Our attitude before the year seemed to be :

hi ho and off we go - off on our way to the flag you know

We bought in redden, jetta and returned emac with no thought to our structures and whether they were ready. Weve taken yeo who is fast out of the middle and put redden who is slow - in his place.

You should have to earn a spot in this team based on performance.

Most people had Redden pegged around the 15th-20th best player on our list, which is about where he has performed this year. Essentially in that area where a few dodgy performances can see you get the axe, and he might not be too far from it now.

Pick 17 was overs, but we wanted to get him and his true value was closer to pick 17 then our second pick around pick 36ish. Given his contract status we didn't have much a choice if we really wanted. Whether we really wanted him is a different question...

I'm gonna reserve judgement on both him and Jetta for a while. We've had a few traded players that have taken a year or two to get going. Wellingham, Cripps and Yeo were all average in their first year and there's nothing to say that Redden (or Jetta) won't improve the way that these guys have once they find their groove.

God forbid someone posts something discussing a footballer on a football forum.

How you can even mention Reddan and Jetta in the same sentence amazes me.Reddan is trying, thats the first difference,Try and watch some of the grunt work hes doing, hes pretty hard at it,id have him over Hutchings any day.Jetta walks behind opposition players who have the ball and you know hes capable of mowing them down with minimal effort, but we arnt even getting that!!

I was hoping that recruits from the east would have enhance our chances of expanding our motto so that not just the west was ours.

Redden should be performing better. He has the skill set and the attributes to be a a really good (not expecting great or AA) midfielder.

Are the players around him dragging him down or is he part of the problem? Not sure but whoever decided to rush him back so quickly is looking stupid. We know the implications with players not getting a full pre-season and we are now paying the price.

Hawthorn is a club that are generally admired at the trade table. They know what they want and they get it. Each year they are thought to have paid overs and in future years they are generally seen as wise moves (examples Hale, Burgoyne, McEvoy, Gibson). A better managed introduction to the club would have seen a different Jack Redden for the first half of this year. I can only hope he gets to do a mini-preseason over this break and get his act together.

I remember when Tyson Stenglein* first came over from the Crows. Was considered a captain-in-waiting, runner up in the Crows B&F at age 25 and came over here to play with us. He copped a lot early on too for seemingly not delivering on the promise he showed at the Crows. He was a tagger primarily but it wasn't until late in 2005 that he really started to gel properly with the team, and he got better in 06 and better again in 07.

*No, Jon Ralph, he's gone now. Get over it.

This is probably the most sensible post I've read on this board all year :thumbs up:
