Toast Jackson Paine is a Future Star

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Came back to the VFL impressive this afternoon and stood out in a Terrible Side. Kicked 3 goals and Marked just about Everything. Love his Strength in a Contest and even threw a Player away off him today.

He Started well in the AFL this season I thought, Did not get much of the Ball but did the Team Things and took some Strong Marks 1 on 1.

In the VFL he just looks a Class Above. Marks about Everything and Reads the Ball Well, His Goal Kicking is Quite Good but Can use Work. Does the Team Thing.

I reckon he will be a Star of the Future this Kid.

Your Thoughts?

BigFooty exploded just as I pressed send, probably because of Melbourne, so I don't know if it posted my message or not.

But yeah, I'm on the bandwagon. I thought he was good in the games that he has played so far, and I hope he gets some more game time this year. He will be a very good player in the future.

Here comes the Paine!:p:thumbsu:

i dunno if he's the sort of player that screams star, but he could be really solid. want to see him play some more AFL games before making any big claims/put the unnecessary hype on him.

Back when I was a kid, I had a dentist named Doctor Paine. But I suppose there are many Paines in this world. I am glad we got one of the better Paines, perhaps even the best.:D

Very True. Has not done a Heap at AFL Level though When he get's involved he has been good. Also give Forward Pressure.

Though in the VFL he seems to read the ball really well in the Air and Take a Strong Mark.

Though I can understand you saying want to see more of him.

I am not Gurantee he be a Star but I think he has Potential to be one

The thing I really like about him is his ability to clunk them. We've all been watching Dawes for a while now and I reckon we've become accustomed to him providing so little overhead unfortunately. When Paine builds his tank and strength he's going to be a breath of fresh air in this regard, and might race past Dawes pretty quickly.

In a Few Seasons could Paine and Cloke be the 2 Main Tall Forwards as both are Strong Marks and Dawes be the 2nd Ruckman like L Brown was?

Dawes also will have to compete with James (?) Stewart in a few years once he is drafted and in Collingwood colours. Paine still seems a 3rd tall size but he may play bigger than his height when he develops more muscle and size. He is the best of our recruits from last year. He played well immediately after coming back from injury, in a losing side, so he could easily find himself back in the AFL very soon. :)

I think this is exactly how it could pan out.

As Joely said above, this kid really does clunk his marks - and he also just goes at the ball, bursting packs in the process.

Also, he seems to have a nice kicking technique.

The last qtr in the VFL, think it was against Box Hill when we narrowly went down, he was crazy with his pack marking in the last qtr.

Will be amazed if he doesn't make it.

Hold on, not on your life could I get accustomed to his lack of marking strength, worst mark in out team even though one the biggest units, he should be improving not going backwards.

Agreed. Every time he throws his hands in the air like an ape it makes me so angry, the bloke is nearing 6'5 over 100kg, and he would get outmarked 1 on 1 by Fasolo I reckon.

I don't think he will ever be a star, but I think he could turn out to be a solid third tall. If/when that role ceases to exist at AFL level, then he may have some issues.

Right now, Goldsack is playing the role he would play, and playing it very well. Goldsack is quicker and more mobile than Paine is right now (and can therefore play a more defensive role better), and I think Paine needs to improve his speed. He is always needing to take contested marks because he doesn't have the separation speed to pull away from his opponent on a lead (especially since he is often playing on a smaller opponent given his height).

I don't think he is in best 22 this year, but possible down the track. Hopefully he gets a run next week.

Excellent analysis Dave.
In the limited number of games in which I have seen him, he certainly gives me the impression he has "got that something"
I hope he kicks on in the seniors next year

i) I have a funny feeling that if we draft Stewart he'll end up playing CHB in the mould of Ben Reid - in the (limited) times I've seen him, his lateral movement and penetrating kick make him ideal for this type of role

ii) I don't know if Paine will make it or not - we've all seen players that we thought would be stars and have then faded from view. What I do know is that at present he offers the potential to provide what we really need - a "bull" type player that can destroy packs as well as taking big clunks. On of my all-time fav forwards to watch was Aaron Hamill and I think Paine has this type of game about about him...whether he makes it or not is still be determined

Arron Hamill all over again. Angry, strong mark, a bit unco, and most importantly the pies have lacked a real enforcer type like in more recent times J. Malloy. Just the beginning of Buckleys own team.

Beat me by a minute top call you sir you know your shit.

Cheers Tonka

...further...

It's great that we have tall forward options (now playing and potentially in the future) that are different in their skill set.

- Cloke / Dawes / Gault / Witts / Ceglar / Tarrant (even Brown and Reid) can all play forward and offer different options / approaches to goal - making us flexible and unpredictable in the future
