Where theres smoke theres fire.

Montagna this morning went on the record that he belives belives hawks will win plenty of games this year and the hysteria is dumb and unfounded.

And here you are with more hysteria...

I'll let you in on a little secret. I'm actually Leigh Montagna and I only said that because we play you guys next week and I didn't want to give you any ammo. ;)

I think it's going to be a lot harder for Hawthorn to attract players after this year to be honest, not to mention the lack of trade value.
It may or may not be harder...
Quality players have been going to under performing teams since the game started.
You need only to look as far a Brisbane, Melbourne, Bulldogs, Collingwood, Richmond, Gold Coast, Carlton & your own team.
Hawthorn would have someone all but signed up already & have to go through the motions to get it done.
I would be foolish to think that they can get anybody they want but the track record speaks for itself I would have thought.
I hope it's one of the guys I mentioned & the other is still making up his mind on the possibility of coming.
If it's neither it will be someone that the club has identified as a need & the club officials that make the decisions will have a slightly better idea than I do. Slightly ;)

Here here, that GAblett fellow went okay.

Hopper wont be cheap though i dont think saints have enough to land him. They must be praying hawks finnish bottom 4 so they can have a chance to land him if he is there main target.

Hawks 2018 1st (pick 1) for hooper. :)

The track record speaks for itself because you had an amazing side and played in grand finals. Yes players often go to under performing clubs but it's usually ones that have built a young list and look like they might be on the way up. I can't see how things don't get worse for Hawthorn before they get better so it's going to be a few years before they are contending again.

Never said that
Seriously after watching the Geelong game today is your priority inside mids?
It seemed to me yours are pretty good, and Geelong won because they had the better talls. I dont pretend to know your list well, but that's how it looked to me.

You wanna take that back son?

We lost CP by 24, while Selwood, Dangerfield and Duncan got piles of it, we couldn't stop them.
Definitely need some more quality midfielders which I'm sure we'll get either kids or ready made players.

Talls aren't bad although forward line probably still needs work

All of it.
Do you think that when players choose to go to under performing clubs that it isn't often the ones with strong young lists?

I can't think of too many times off the top of my head that big name players would choose to go to an under performing club with an aging list. I'm sure there are times it has happened but it doesn't seem to be something that happens regularly.

Yeah
I thought it was a high standard game. Brown had a great game. Just seemed to me their mids looked better because it was a lot easier to find a mark when they needed an out.
I'll defer though, like I said I dont know your list very well.

Absolutely we need to add to our inside. Desperately. Joel Selwood destroyed us in there today.

Steven is terrific, but ideally we want someone else extracting it to him, so that he can then run away with it and it's a similar story with Seb Ross, who looked like he'd be more your CP and clearance winning type when we drafted him, but who is now more of an outside "deliverer" and link-up type. We need someone elite to extract it to them so that they can do their thing.

Armitage was terrific in 2015 when he really broke out at last, but has been struggling badly with his body since and who knows if it will ever allow him to consistently get back to his best. He was told his back was "worse than that of a 50-70yo" and now he's got groin problems.

Steele will hopefully be very good down the track and Acres and Gresham have a lot of potential, but Acres may never be that inside "beast" that someone like Hopper could be and Gresham may never have the tank to play in there full time, and we could also really do with him close to goals.

We badly need a Fyfe/Dusty/Rockliff/Hopper type for the guts.

The main reason Geelong beat us in the air today is that most of the time we kicked it long forward they outnumbered us 2 or 3 to 1, or 3 or 4 to 2, or whatever.

Treloar picked Pies over Tigers.. so I'll just disagree to be a pain

Hawks youth didnt look poor today. Sicily, TOB, Brand, Hardwick, Burton, Howe, Hartung and Mitchell.

Lovell out with a shoulder is a shame because he is another that has a heep of talent.
Add OMeara.
Good foundations.

Just for comparison reasons who where Collingwoods good youth at the time?

Fair enougI had a look at the stats and they support your view any. I thought stevens had a great game and acres looks like he will be very good. Not impressed with Steele, honestly I've seen him play better. Hope he does get better of course.
Today left me thinking our game at Etthiad should be a gòod one, but you might have to find a way to negate Rory's marking around the ground.
I'm wondering if I can get two Fridays in a row off work and go, I think it be woeth the effort, but that might be a stretch.

The Pies had a lot more youth than the Hawks though, they didn't have an aging list at all... They've just been very poor with their list selections since and have a very average coach.

Our players aren't exactly old apart from... Hodge (32), Burgoyne (34), Birchall (29), Roughead (30), Gibson (33), Puopolo (29)

Then you got Frawley (28), Rioli (27), Whitecross (27), Gunston (25), Shiels (25), Breust (26), Stratton (28), McEvoy (27), Vickery (26), Ceglar (26), Langford (24), Smith (28), Duryea (25), Henderson (28), Fitzpatrick (25), Schoenmakers (26)

Then a lot of young players that are 23 & under. O'Meara, Mitchell, Howe, Burton, Lovell, Hardwick...

That was Steele's worst game for us by far I'd say. Missed most of the preseason, so may have hit the wall a bit.

Carlisle ought to be an ideal option for Lobb, he's been terrific for us in defence this year and I don't remember him having even been outmarked once. We've needed someone like him for years. Might be needed on Patton tho!

You guys ought to be all over us in the midfield though, not looking forward to that and doubt very much we'll win.

We're also going to be going in off back-to-back 6 day breaks and we're already struggling to sustain our high intensity gameplan for 4 quarters.

We'll see, I expect a good contest in the mids.
I think most teams can win the flag if they can maintain their best footy for 4 qtrs.
