He was ready and willing to come home that year - without doubt, but after that, we had no chance.
I doubt it. He was on his way to becoming the King of Perth, was All Australian that year, investment opportunities opening up for him in that booming town, soon to become their highest paid player. If he was that keen on coming home and we weren't keen he would have ended up at Port.

The story about how he was dead keen to come home but the Crows went cold on the deal has been propagated by his family. I have a theory on this.

What was drawing him home? The pull of family, friends. No doubt his family would have loved him to come home. They'd want him to be happy, yes, as a priority but if he could be happy AND close enough to spend time with them, grand kids nearby etc then that's the perfect scenario for any family. Did Pav feel the same way?

If he decided that he'd prefer to stay in Perth, what was he going to tell his family? The pull of family isn't strong enough to draw me away from the opportunities I am going to get in Perth. Sorry guys, I guess blood isn't thicker than water after all. Far better to say that the Crows weren't really interested.

It was their fault the deal fell through... looks like I'd be better off staying in Perth after all... what a shame, I really miss you guys HEAPS and would love to have been able to come home... bloody Crows, eh?

I don't buy it. I reckon he wanted to stay in Perth and a possible homecoming with the Crows/Port as suitors was just the sort of red herring that would help drive his Fremantle deal skywards.

We should've got both - what we traded for Carey was *******; where else was he going to go?
Collingwood. They were also super keen on him.

It would all depend on the sale price Carlton want.

If we could get him for a pick between 25 and 40 - where do we sign but anything close to a first rounder would be a very quick NO

Oh for sure, if we could get him on the cheap via trade, then do it. But I only see Carlton getting rid of him to get picks for a rebuild, and as one of their more talented players, and them being Carlton, I imagine they'd ask for something ridiculous.

How old are you Grotto?

Can you remember the 2002-2003 period? At the time we were very close to a premiership, not Sando one kick away but a genuine chance as we had the majority of 97 and 98 still playing.

Getting Carey was the right move st the time. He was the icing on the cake.

However things didn't go as planned but it was the right move at the right time.

Yes, it could be argued we paid was too much but going for Carey was a no brainer and in no way an saying Aryes was being selfish. We were going for a flag and thst was the right move.

Carey was the number 1 priority at the time and Pavlich was a young keep position player.

Also, just for accuracy - Kane Johnson didn't get us pick two (or four); it actually got us Jason Torney and ten pick upgrades in our first, second and third round.

We then traded the first and second round (!) for Carey, who couldn't raise his arms above his head.

Makes a lot of sense. At Fremantle, he was always going to be "the man", and reap the off field financial benefits that come with that. Where as back at the AFC, he'd be joining the queue behind the likes of the already established Ricciuto, McLeod, Goodwin etc...

Carey wasn't icing on the cake though. On paper it looked good though I do admit...

He was old, expired lumpy cream after his year off and at the ripe old age of 32. He had no shoulders and turned like the HMAS melbourne.

Pav kicked 37 goals from 23 in the year we had Pavlich and was their 3rd best player for the year.

Carey kicked 29 from 16 definitely was not inside our top 5 best players. The fact remains that Carey was on his last legs both health wise and as a player. In hindsight, Pav was always the right choice.

Grotto with all due respect you don't know you're talking about.

Carey had an enforced year out of the game, and so the thinking went it meant his body would have time to recover and get over any niggles. Every club was bidding and chasing him. The belief of the time was that after a year of healing that here was a chance to get the greatest chf of all in close to peak condition.

there was a belief that he would be in better shape than he had been in years. And I don't think you realise just how good he was. Goat.

Before you start delivering cheap shots, maybe consider the guy couldnt raise his arms above his shoulders for starters and no amount of healing was ever going to fix that, he has built up scar tissue over years and years. Who cares if every Club was chasing for him, the guy was well passed his best. The fact remains he struggled badly in his time at the Crows.

My issue was not recruiting him, but the fact that we said no to Pavlich ahead of him, even with hindsight I was not at the time thinking this was the best move for the AFC, the fact that Pavlich had a better time compared to Carey over that period vindicates this. I dont have a problem with the draft picks given up for him as we were in a premiership window at the time and the sacrifice needed to be made.

Of course Carey was a champion, he was however a shadow of his best when he arrived in Adelaide.

58 goals from 28 games is not a failure. 2.08 goals a game.

The only negative outcome from that time, we didn't win a flag. If we won a flag in 2002, 03 or 04 - that would have been a massive success. We didn't but Carey at the crows was not a failure.

Hentschel, Bock, Perrie and McGregor all benefited from his time at the club.

Yes, we all would have loved Matthew Pavlich to come to the club but going for Carey was the right move.
