I am not sure I have seen a worse 3-week * patch of football from a supposed Number 1 defender for a very long time.

Aside from the fact he couldn't get close to Neitz this week, a guy with two dodgy knees, and Polak last week, he doesn't even appear to want to. Since his return he has barely made a spoil (I can remember one easy one tonight where he had the sit and could pick it off), grabbed onto his opponent if he is within reach at all, and otherwise followed along behind his opponent like a trailer.

But that is not my main concern. He has also fumbled everything he gets his hands on, has panicked under pressure to a degree where his courage must be questioned, his kicking and decision making have both been poor, and has side-stepped marking contests and gone with one hand when he needed to put his body on the line.

He still gets talked up because he gets an abundance of cheap possessions off half back, but he lacks the real run and penetration he once had as well.

If you think I am being hard on him, take another look at the tape from any of the last three* games, and ignoring the loose possessions, count the number of times Clement wins the football on his own merit and uses it effectively, and compare that to the number of times he pulls out, fumbles, or trails his opponent.

Even better, next time you are at a game, watch Clement when his direct opponent takes a mark or kicks a goal. He has an amazing ability to disappear from the area and make it look like someone else's problem.

I know he is someone that usually takes a long time to find form, and I know he missed a long period through injury, but on present form Clement is not only not in our best 22, his soft performances actually have a negative impact on the team.

* Edit: Thanks to mydarlingclementine for pointing out just how long the last three matches have felt!!!

Did I get the number wrong? Has he only been back for four?

Or did I just run into a Clement fan?

He's been back for 3 off a 10+ week layoff. I'm sure you'd be having a go at Buckley the same way if he was rusty next couple of weeks, right?

Neitz kicked 3 goals tonight, one of which was gifted to him from the unpire, so Clement is obviously crap keeping a 300 hundred gamer to a 2 goal 'haul'. I think not.

Well he didn't do much for those other 2 weeks either then, did he ;)

Part of my concern is a trend I have been noticing in him for a while.

But I have no doubt that at his best he is one of the best defenders in the league. It is just that at the moment, he isn't playing like one, he looks slow, out of form, and unwilling to take responsibility. If he is finding form after coming back from injury, he should be doing it at Williamstown.

At the moment, I think we would get better value throwing someone like Cox back there, or Goldsack after his week off (who panics in much the same way, but at least throws himself into marking contests), until Clement can get his touch back.

Neitz kicked 3.3 and fed a few others off. If he kicked straight and was a selfish Lloyd instead of a 300-game captain, he could have easily kicked a bag of 6 or more.

My concern is that Clement looks physically and mentally slow at the moment, like he can't quite keep up with the pace of the game, and needs a couple of weeks to get his sure hands back. I am just suggesting that with our finals on the line, Collingwood's backline may not be the best place for him to get his form back.

He was in the best against Carlton (his first game back). Against Richmond last week probably had his worst game in 5 years. This week he wasn't great but was hardly terrible either. Neitz got most of his opportunities either off free kicks or from Clement running the ball up the ground, then seeing a team-mate turn it over and it coming back over his head.

1 awful game (Richmond) and one average game (last night) does not make a trend.

I guess you haven't seen him this year.

I would suggest that his fitness is slowing down a tad.
The long layoff would have reduced his workload at training and
the year has got by him.

He'll be back boys & girls...mark my words

his form is down, but your assertions that he is shirking contests and not doing the team thing are nothing short of absolute dribble.

There is absolutely no way he will 'dissappear from the area' after his opponenent kicks a goal to make it look like someone elses problem, everyone knows who their opponent is mate, and he would never shirk he just isn't back to full match fitness yet.

He has also fumbled everything he gets his hands on, has panicked under pressure to a degree where his courage must be questioned,

Firstly l wouldn't be questioning the courage of Clement, l have ssen this bloke back into packs coutless times and put his body on the line to get a spoil in. he is one of the premier backman in the competition.
Clement didn't/couldn't train for about 1 month due to his calf injury, and is just getting back into the game after a 2 month layoff. Give the guy a break, he playing in one of the tougher positions on the ground, and is expected to also lead from the front, considering the youth back there.
He will get the run back in the legs come finals time, and will have the normal dash of half back. I agree he isn't playing his best footy, and he is obviously frustrated by this, as he is a perfectionist the way he goes about his footy. Maybe a run on the half back flank, where he dosen't have to worry about trying to shut down a big key forward, may give him a little more freedom, and get the run back into his game.

have to say i agree to some extent with clements form..
he isnt himseld and isnt takin marks he usaully does or have the closing speed that he usually does..
clement in his prime is one of the best defenders in the game..
and since his comeback he has been average so yes i do agree with this comment to a point

I noticed last night, he seems very confused with some of the umpire's interpretations with one on ones.

Well come to think of it, during last night's umpiring performances I got confused for about 3 and a half qtrs.
