Gwilt was pretty much a depth player until 2009, and with a couple of exceptions didn't influence the game much.
In 2009 he seemed to start to use his strength and weight a lot more. He was getting into packs and breaking tackles. Some supporters thought that it was good to keep him in the forward line, even though he didn't seem to provide a scoring option.
One problem he seemed to have was playing hot potato with the ball. As soon as he got the ball he would rapidly handpass it to another player, often while they were under too much pressure.
2010. He's being used in the back line and looking much more composed. While he doesn't have the long spindly arms that seem to make a natural defender, when he gets it, he is much more composed, and against the Kangaroo's he was disposing by foot. Long kicks with pinpoint accuracy.

I really liked his game last night, provided a lot of dash out of defence while putting in a solid defensive effort. Hale got the better of him a few times, but that'll happen when you concede 13 centimetres in height

He was phantastic last night, not only with some long and accurate kicks, but also with some very smart long hand balls over the pressing North forward line which opened up the entire ground for us.

I generally had the impression that we gave up the play on at all cost with quick and rapid handballing and rather tried to control the game until there was an opening (even going backwards sideways) which was then exploited with a quick and ruthless running attack or accurate kick into the forward line. It may not always be as nice to watch as last year, but bears a lot less risk (giving up the long bombs helps, too) and is better suited for our players.

The next step for Gwilt will be some of the running through the lines he showed during the NAB Cup. In any event, I'm not sure who Fisher will replace once he's back, but on current form it should not be Gwilt.

Gotta wonder why the guy hasn't showed this sort of intensity in previous seasons, but I guess he's showing it now. Always a lovely kick, it's good to see him lift his workrate to get more of the ball. At 188cm and without any real leap, he always needed to find a yard or two. Fingers crossed he can maintain it for the season.

I guess we'd like to think that the coaching staff have given him clear direction, and he is working on what they've told him.

At the start of last year I really wasn't convinced - perhaps I was slightly influenced by my friend who thought that every touch of his would lead to a turnover. However, we would always cheer every one of his goals with extra enthusiasm :)

Gwilt has become a much more reliable player since then, and I think he's well on the way to establishing a permanent spot in our best 22.

Able to play forward or back and possessing a decent kick, he can become a really valuable player if he continues to work hard and improve his game. I can see his future on our half-back flank.

He's also a very friendly and talkative guy; me & my friends had a good chat to him at the B&F last year.

Best game of his career tonight?

I'm delighted for Jimmy. It seems as though he finally appears to believe that he truly belongs in a champion team.

Hasn't this man looked reinvented in his defensive role!

I am a strong believer in this man!

I read somewhere that prior to the 2009 season he had a good heart to heart with ( fellow Noble Park native ) Glen Archer, and took on board the advice to use his size and strength more. Obviously that advise co-incided nicely with the direction StKilda were taking.

Noble gesture from Archer to Gwilt

...

Gwilt has been a fringe-player for much of his time in the AFL but has played in each of St Kilda's first eight wins after some mentoring from fellow Noble Park alumnus Archer.

"He was pretty honest with me and said I need to improve on my physicality. I had the body and the physical traits for it, but just getting it in my head that I could do that sort of stuff that he used to do," Gwilt said.

"He taught me about taking it one contest at a time."

Dear man wearing #33,

I don't know what you did to that bloke who's been wearing the number for the past six years, but you're a terrific impostor. You're much quicker than the old bloke, much more confident, your kicks hit the target more often and your tackling is so much better.

I'm not sure if you 'offed' the old Jimmy Gwilt, but I don't care. Just keep turning up because you're awesome.

Regards,

Fehring

Quoted for truth!

Oh, and lulz. :D:thumbsu:

Geez he would have loved playing at Moorabbin in the '80's. Some excellent saves tonight and he seemed to be decisive when he had the ball - as he should when he can kick the pill like that in the wet.

Now, now, Squizz, you and I both know NOBODY liked playing at Moorabbin in the 1980s...

Think Jeff Sarau did (the opposition ruckman couldn't get off the ground!).

Greg Burns did too, as it meant everyone ran at the same speed as him (slow).

But yeah, not everyone's cup of mud (pic from 1963 when Moorabbin used to play there):

Now I think about it, I agree with you on Gwilty - he would have had no chance getting the mud out of his 'fro using only cold water!

Is that how they make dreadlocks?

Jim Gwilt - not a mark spilt (except for that dodgy pass from Gilbo in the 1st).

What's going on there? Are they picking mushrooms?
