Early reports are saying ACL and out for the year :mad:

Such a shame as he has been one our most consistent players this year and vital to our team... Hopefully its not as first feared and he's back in time for finals.

I'm praying it's not an ACL but going by what Lyon said and the fact he was on crutches at the end of the game it's hard to see it being anything else.

Will be a real shame if it is an ACL as he has been in great form, probably a contender to win our B&F this year, and he is a great bloke that has turned his career around from being a fringe player to one of our first picked.

Just got to hope he can make a quick recovery, if not this year then as early as possible next year.

Confident that we can be in an even better positition this time next year with McEvoy and Steven tearing it up and getting better and better along with a few others improving massively and Lenny back so there will be room for him to to make up for lost time even if its 12 months:thumbsu: Poor bugger:mad:

Condolences to the Gwilt family. It must be tough seeing a family member go down and just out of nowhere as well. Who knew a regular shepherd could cause such a horrendous injury?

I hope he gets back sooner rather than later, really important cog of our team. Best of luck in recovery, Jimmy.

Farren Ray said that Ross rekons it's an ACL and could be season ending for Jimmy, so just a heads up to expect the worst Sainters.

Terrible luck for the lad. Just reading an article last night online about him coming through the suburban football route with Noble Park as opposed to the TAC. Then getting picked late in the draft starting slow and really coming on after 50 odd games. Real feel good story he is and the only PNG rep in the indigenious round. Last week when Fisher was negated by Cornbread he just took over as that loose man with ease. You just feel with his poise when he´s got the ball its in safe hands. Gutted to see this happen to him. Hope the boys can really play with some heart for the rest of the season for Lenny and Jimmy (if its season ending).

real shame :( such a minor incident too :(

did anyone else hear at the start where they mentioned Gwilt is leading us in Rebound 50s and Inside 50s? pretty good effort, he will be a big loss

Praying its only a Medial or something and 4-6 weeks

That's terrible for him and a real shame, hoping for a speedy recovery.

Really unfortunate for Gwilt and the club, he was really coming into his own this year and the last.

I guess if you want to stay optimistic, you could say this injury opens up a spot for Walsh to come in especially with the soft draw over the next few weeks, although I doubt Lyon will pick him.

I reckon perfect chance to put Gilbert back where he dominated 2009/2010 and played his best football... Then bring in Tom Lynch to play Gilberts role or up forward..

Think it will come down to matchups, next two weeks we dont really need another tall defender. But yea Walsh should play the Suns game to see what he has..

Such a massive loss, you really have to feel for him.

Any chance for LARS surgery?
In my non-professional opinion he would most likely fit the required criteria, but do we really want him having the LARS surgery? It's still so unproven and he still has his whole career ahead of him. We want what is best for him, long term, not what is best for the club short term.

the answer is naturally 'no'.

a. have lars and your leg will not ever be the same
b. he's fit and will make a full recovery given time
c. we have a glut of defenders ready willing and able to take his spot this season
d. although you feel for him he'd know that it's part of footy at the elite level.

St Kilda defender James Gwilt to miss rest of the season

JAMES Gwilt's season is over after the St Kilda defender had scans showing he had ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

"It is confirmed he has an ACL injury and he will require surgery," a club spokeswoman said.

The 82-game veteran, who played in St Kilda's losing grand final side against Collingwood last year, has not missed a game for the Saints in 2011 and is averaging 18.9 possessions.

Gwilt finished the game on crutches and was consoled by team-mates who knew his season was likely to be finished.

Saints coach Ross Lyon confirmed the club's worst fears yesterday, that Gwilt had damaged anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and would require surgery, leaving the club without one of its key defensive posts.

''We've had that confirmed … I spoke to Tim Barbour our doctor, it's definitely an ACL with some sort of lateral meniscus damage,'' Lyon said on 3AW yesterday.

''He'll see [orthopaedic surgeon] Julian Feller tomorrow.''

Agree. Not yet 25yo, so has time to deal with the layoff and the time it might take him to recapture form.

Hopefully Lenny can help him through the tough days which lie ahead.

Gilbo has already said that he can step in to play on the taller types if required.

That would leave the door ajar for Gears (along with Blakey, Bakes, Lynch and maybe even Walsh).

Gut wrenching, especially in light of his recent form. Doubt he'd make it back this year even with LARS, better off going down the conventional route

Just as well we have all those flasho new medical facilities in Seaford, we bloody need them.

Its never the same anyway. Re-co ligaments relax over time.
