Gday Bombers fans, dont know if this has already been raised but i'll start the topic anyway.

Do any of you think that James Hird has gone on 1 year too many?
I think he has, from the games I have seen him play he has had little impact and has only kicked 1 goal for the year
Is this his fault? or do you think Sheedy is using him incorrectly?

It is a great shame to see him under perform, as he is one of the true greats of the game and you always want to remember him for his achievements not the guy who went on 1 season too long..

He had 30 possessions on Saturday. Sure, he doesn't influence games like he used to but a champion doesn't deserve to finish off his career in 15th position.
Hopefully this year we can send him out while the team is on the up and playing good footy.

I have no doubt he can at least present and do everything he possibly can, but I hope things turn around for the team...he deserves some success to leave the game with.

Hes still getting his hands on the ball, he needs the other blokes around him in the centre to step up so he can move into the forward line on a more regular basis.

Ridiculous proposition. Hird has been close to best in a number of the early games, and he's still getting plenty of the pill. He shouldn't have to be teh best player in the team - it is the rest of the team that should lift around him.

As for the "1 goal" - big deal. He's rarely played forward.

This thread cant be serious...Hirdy has done too much this year..He is meant to be phasing out of the team and handing it over to th enext leaders..But here we are saying..Why isnt Hirdy winning us games off his own boot? Gee maybe he is useless now..

Seriously..James Hird is doing his job and will do for the rest of the year..If the other players cant play their hearts out for the gernsey they wear as he does then that to me is the sadest thing of them all. Its all Hirdy does and its all any true fan asks..Dont blame James Hird for our losses..

It was a fair question as James has been up and down and not influencing games like he used to, but if he is still enjoying his footy and being at the club then he made the right decision, he can still find it and use it well, which is more then a couple of younger players who we thought would be taking the next step by now.

he still gets the ball but is nowhere near as damaging.
I'm sure Alistair Clarkson wouldn't have minded seeing hirdy get 30 possies on saturday, especially as around 1/2 of them were ineffective.

Solution

Play him up forward with occasional bursts in the centre.

time for Dyson, Winderlich and Watson (Blokes who have been there for 4-5 yrs) to start racking up the 25+ touches a game.

Spot on.

He's there because he is still gets the ball. Can you imagine him playing in the VFL..he would be dominating every match.

He's too fit and strong to retire, the skills are still excellent at training.

I want him in every line-up that he's available for.

his form is good enough, he is a champ. But i think essendon needs to move on from James Hird. But he deserves the chance to retire on his own accord

In my opinion Hirdy should be played primarily in the forward line. If we still have to rely on him to win games off his own boot then we are in deep trouble.

I used to be a fan of playing him up forward, but have gone off it. He doesn't have the marking ability to win a contest any more, or the pace to get free on a lead. His best position is at the drop of the ball in a contest where he is still as clean and as classy as anyone in the league

Hird should be played in the backline.

If you look at the stats and even for last year, scoring isn't our problem, it's a leaky defence.

A cool head and some extra skills down back would help!

Its our crap midfield. They don't do a lot with the ball when they get it. Might have a few good passages of play a game.

Jobe has no problem what so ever with that, it's just the disposal (kicking) he has to worry about. As for the other 2, Windilich will be a 20+ disposal whilst Dyson, he'd get quite a few possies in the VFL I think.

Dyson would get alot of possies in AFL if bloody Sheedy played him on the ground!

Anyway, thats my Dyson rant for atleast the next 10 minutes. As for Hird, he can never have played too long. As long as he is still competitive, he will not be dropped from the side. He is a morale boost for the players I would imagine and his leadership qualities are top notch.

I find these questions about Jimmy highly disrespectful.

He's given a lot to the club. If he thought he wasn't contributing, he has been around long enough and been a part of the club that he loves so much, to know what to do.

The guy is still a champion, he might lack the pace as a leading forward but playing down back alot doesnt help you score goals either. He definitely deserved to play on this year and will help us out.

Team mates, the younger ones in particular, will always kick it to him, it was quite sad last Saturday watching him, he looked lost. His team mates will kick it to him even when he`s double teamed . Should have pulled up stumps last season

It would have been devastating for him and every Essendon person if he finished his brilliant career with the team sitting equal last.
I've actually found our team doing well alot this season so far, without Hird influencing games like he used to.

He's definately in our best 22. Apart from last week he's still used the ball very well and found it pretty well. We just have to use him like a cameo/impact player and not expect anything more because he doesn't have the legs to play as a full time midfielder.

No way in hell I'm writing him off.

There were plenty of other passengers out there on Saturday, the Bombers played the worst brand of football i've seen in a long time. Hirdy was no different playing this poxy 'keepings off' style of play. We have two full backs who both kick the ball 60+ metres and they're chipping it 30. To single out one player is unfair even if he is past his best, he was at the bottom of more packs than a lot of our younger players.

When he gets it, he's still serviceable. Everyone just needs to realise his powers are diminishing as each round progresses and all but gone are the games when he can be thrown in the middle to end up with the ball.
