James Stewart, did we stuff this one up?

Whether he did or he didn't, he had no idea how it would all pan out before trade week so was impossible for him to committ to Stewart at that stage. It's clear we didn't rate him in the top 20...and not a lot of Key Position Players become guns outside of this range anyway.

If we nominated him with the father/son pick 42 then is it correct only a first round draft pick so below 25 would have gotten him ahead of us? Not that it matters to much I believe that Colingwood got the best big man in the draft and they probabaly didnt want another ruck prospect. Maybe Stewart would have been our backup option if Grundy was gone by pick 18, but this is all speculation.

With the cap on interchange coming in I see the future of tall fwds being limited. In a couple years clubs will only be able to play 1 genuine ruck (witts), 1 fwd/ruck (grundy) and 1 fwd (cloke). Everyone else will be midfielders rotating through the fwd line.

We have jackson paine and keefe as our back up talls. I guess Stewart would've been 1 too many.

Surely we have monitored him for longer than any other club, combined with our current list situation, we must have seen something we didn't like

We nominate, we don't bid. That's someone else's job. We can match anyone's bid with our next available selection.

Please, strange is a compliment to what I've been called over the years.;)

I have no idea what it means either, I just figured it was highbrow, so I had to go low.
Looks like a Malthouse quote to me.:p

And now Carlton supporters get to be tortured by him... good times...:D

I am not saying we should have set aside pick 80 to fs James Stewart because frankly, I don't know anything about him. However, if we thought he was in the best sixty odd players available, we should have. We can't be worried about hurting the kid's feelings. It's too hard to build a list as it is. In any case, if we bid pick 80 for him and someone outbid us, that would have shown him he was highly valued, just not by us.

The fs bidding process doesn't work like draft day. Jack Viney going at pick 26 is proof enough of that. He was being spoken about as the best player in the draft pool but slid because other clubs didn't want to commit their first round picks to him. I doubt it very much that Viney would have lasted to pick 26 if he hadn't been pre-selected. GWS took Stewart at 27 because they saw him as the best player available to them THEN. It is far less likely they would have been prepared to commit pick 27 to him pre-draft. Even if they had, we would not have lost a thing and Stewart would have been a lot less nervous prior to his name being called out.
