I thought Angry Boys was just all over the place. It'll end up being forgotten in his cannon because it didn't have much consistency.
The bad episodes were absolutely woeful but the best ones, mostly the first, were really good. The Asian skater and his mum was literally shit-humour and it fell flat and felt awkward to watch because it was so immature and bad. Blake Oakfield was really good, though. That "shot in the balls" and fight with Pako episode was one of the best he's ever done... there was something so spot on about all of that. I grew up on a coastal town where the irrelevant 'surf culture' was still hanging on by the tattered zip string of West wetty, so that wanky character of overgrown boys and pricks with over-inflated egos was piss-funny. It just struck a cord. So too did the brothers from Dunt.
He's a really good critique of Australian culture. And that's what we genuinely need. That's what the ABC and SBS should be for – not pissweak dramas and poor acting. You should be able to take the piss out of these uniquely, but absolutely awful, shards of our culture. And no one in the industry really seems to understand and dissect that as well as him. Currently, at least.
The fact kids at my school didn't get S.Mouse was a piss take and Jonah wasn't supposed to actually be seen as "tough" or "cool" sadly concretes how good his assessment and portrayals can be.
Besides, no show got anyone talking more than Chris Lilley shows. I remember everyone would talk about last nights ep back in high school. It was always a gut-buster when everyone would pipe up with lines and "did you see the bit"'s and "oh remember when"'s. More of that.
The worst part of Angry Boys is the lack of realism.
Why was the documentary crew filming those people before they even knew of the party?
