Indigenous people should get over it... just as soon as white conservatives get over Gallipoli.

Australia was once 500 different nations.......so what day didn't the english invade if there were 500 invasions?

since then, people from all over the globe continued to arrive/ invade......so what day did all the people of the world not invade?

prior to all of that, aborigines arrived in waves, effectively invading each other over and over.......so what day did they not invade?

perhaps people should focus on what brings people together rather than what divides us.

Why should I be made to feel guilt or shame for something my ancestors might or might not have done more than 200 years ago?

you shouldnt!!

ive just read some comments made between combatants including politically incorrect australia group. it's kinda depressing. can we not just enjoy the day for what it is? a day off?

i did read an interesting comment/theory. the same people complaining about people complaing about "invasion day" are those who complain about being swamped by asians/muslims/insert race here.

thought provoking.

anyway off to play a game invented by the scots.

Is it?

That sort of attitude is absolutely toxic to their cause IMO. More and more people are just becoming completely off put by these sorts of discussions (race, politics, sexuality, gender etc) because of the hysteria and vitriol that inevitably flows from both sides. The implication from one side that if you aren't with them then you're against them is something that reasonable people are becoming more aware of and fed up with.

Always thought the Indigenous would have suffered a worse fate had they been invaded by someone else. i.e. Japanese WW2. Not that it would have taken that long for it to occur

How worse could their fate possibly be? Seriously, it's just a pointless hypothetical not even worse considering. Do we need to go back over the frontier wars, stolen generation, and social issues that are still rife today? It's not pretty what's happening up north, and the situation doesn't look like righting itself anytime soon, but out of sight out of mind I guess...

Not 'might or might not', they did. And you shouldn't feel guilty or shameful, but you should recognise that Indigenous people are now severely disadvantaged in society, and it is a direct result of them being mistreated since 1788.

I think it would be nice if everybody had enough empathy that even if they didn't consider the day offensive themselves, they could acknowledge that many others do. It would be nice if we could have a day that wasn't marred by controversy and debate and have a date that everybody could be happy with.

Personally I don't see why it has to be a specific, historically significant date at all. Just make it a certain Monday in January or February and then we always get a long weekend.

It could definitely be a lot worse

I think January 26th causes enough genuine stress to enough people that the date should be moved. Pick a date with relevance, or irrelevance, shared by all Australians.

I always thought the anniversary of federation would be the perfect date, when our states came together and formed Australia as a nation. It's a shame that our politicians of the day had no foresight and signed off on the constitution on January 1st, so we'd probably just lose the new year's day holiday if that were the case. Hopefully they'll put some more thought into it when we become a republic.

What are you doing today chaining yourself to a front end loader, I've got plenty of indigenous mates actually one of them is coming over for a barbie to celebrate, he's embarrassed of the dipshits who tell him he should be outraged and what to think during this day.
