A interesting article about what a talented footballer who was overlooked goes through on draft day.

Keeping the faith
After everyone in the room offered condolences and well wishes for the future the Petrenko family left leaving behind a desolate Reid.

“I can’t believe it. I’m shattered for Jared,” he said.
Do you think we will look at Petrenko for the PSD or the rookie draft?

I know Rogers stated we want a mature body in the PSD because have a young list and we might have someone lined up. But I'd rather we grab an untried kid with legspeed than a retread in Dunn if that's who we are after.

I want another Eddie Betts and a speedy goalkicker, but a midfielder this time.

Eddie was picked in the PSD. ;)

You'd think that a couple of queries over him might have been his height, and the fact that he turned the ball over a bit at the Championships. I'm not sure how old he is, and if he qualifies for the RD, but if he does, you would think he would at least get rookied.

Thanks. :thumbsu:

Petrenko is eligible in the rookie draft and PSD to be drafted since he's training with Port Adelaide Power.

You have to be pretty special to make it at that height, but we've seen Pearce win the rising star award and star after being drafted in the rookie draft. So it's no surprise to see Petrenko take up an offer to train with Port given they picked Pearce and they have a good track record with indigenous footballers. I think we need another goal sneak and more pace in the forwardline, so I hope we're looking at Jared for the rookie draft.

He would be in my top 3 candidates so far for the rookie draft, but I don't think Carlton will take him. They may have addressed that area with Browne and Armfield.

Tend to agree TGR. It will certainly interesting to see who the club go for in the RD. Perhaps a Laidler, Gourdis, McGinnity, Hall or Kay might be in the clubs sights.

Get Petrenko in the PSD and rookie Luke Miles and we will have a team of Jets :)

Miles - 2.73 20m
Armfeild - 2.83
Hampson - 2.83
Grigg - 2.89
Judd - 2.something
Petrenko - 2.98
Walker
Simpson
Murphy

Wasn't it reported on TC that Gibbs is also sub 3 sec now ?

That's what I want to see! :thumbsu:

Another mosquito fleet at Carlton. :)

My only concern is Petrenko might be a similar player to Betts.

JR - 2.89
Murph - 2.98
Benjamin - 2.95
Grigg - 2.92
Joey A - 2.98

none of it means that much really, Betts was over 3 seconds for his 20m, but I'd back him to pull away from a pack just as fast as any of those guys

As TGR pointed out, the main problem with Petrenko is he plays a similar small defender/tagger role that we recruite Armfield and to a lesser extent browne to play.....however I'm not convinced that Browney won't be part of the midfield rotation in time, and Petrenko will hopefully play a bit more of a style of game similar to his idol Gavin Wanganeen. Would also be interested to know if Petrenko has spent any time up forward during his junior footy.

As much as I would love to get him, I think this would be the type of slightly irrational high risk/high return strategy that WH tends to avoid and others will be higher on the radar.

Even though he is no longer elligible ... why do so many people here not rate Gaertner ... 198 cm running machine, can be moulded into a super CHB ! .... once we correct his disposal.

or am I being naieve ?

C4, you really have to get over this obsession with Guerty. Wasn't for us this time around....He's a great kid, hope he has a great year and gets himself drafted next year :thumbsu:

Just like Andrew Walker who isn't the quickest player at the club over 20 metres.

I've seen Walker run down Andrew Lovett because he has the "torque" to accelerate quickly from a standing start and the motor to maintain his speed. Walker nearly caught Judd in one of those videos on youtube, but Judd's teammate applied a block as Walker was closing on him.

Walker looked stuffed at the end of that chase. :D
