Jared Petrenko Upgraded

One is Macca. I think the other is Goodwin
ahh, again Edwards is overlooked. next year will be a big year for the club;...as all 3 may retire (i think they all will).

...and with a good pre-season and NAB cup, Petrenko could easily slide right into the starting 22. haven't been more excited about our youngsters.

Jared Petrenko is to be upgraded to senior list next year was just reported on 7 news

I hope this means he will be put back on rookie list and then we will upgrade him again for Burton next year. It makes no sense to upgrade him to senior list before ND as it means the Crows would be doing themselves out of a high placed draft pick.

For example if we have only 5 draft picks in ND, our 5th pick could be around pick 70. I would hate for our sake that Pentrenko has not been immidiatly upgraded, this would mean that essentialy he could replace our 5th PSD pick. Instead we would then go to the rookie draft for our next pick and you could be looking at picks begining around 120 ( if teams go deep into ND)

While he is on our rookie list we have his services secured. it would be stupid to upgrade him now, He is a talent and should be looked after by the crows, just wait till next year and upgrade him for Burton on long term injury.

yeh, but Burton won't be on the long-term injury list for all of next year...what if Petrenko has a breakthrough season and then he's forced back onto the rookie list. IMO, upgrading him is a good option. plus, how is upgrading him considered 'not looking after him'.

Chances are somone else will be on long term injury by the time Burton comes back around July August next year.

The other advantage of Petrenko being up graded is that it still gives us the opportunity of upgrading a performing rookie while Burton is out of action.

Moss is the one I'm thinking of as he will have his first proper pre-season in the one coming up and should go ahead in leaps and bounds next year.

Alternatively we may decide to put a mature forward on the rookie list in case of need.

We have more options available if Petrenko is up-graded.

A couple of things about the rookie upgrading process.

Rookies can be upgraded mid-season, replacing another player who has been placed on the Long Term Injury list. Once the season ends though, they return to the rookie list.

At the end of the year, rookies can be promoted permanently to the senior list. They are no longer on the rookie list, but the senior list. At the end of the year each club delists a number of players, the promoted rookie effectively takes one of the positions thus vacated. This is what will happen in Petrenko's case. Once on the senior list, players cannot be rookie listed again unless they are delisted and re-drafted in the rookie draft (yes, this happens occasionally).

macca23 is correct with his assessment of the rookie numbers. Normally, clubs can have up to 6 rookies, dependent upon the number of outside veterans on their list. This year we had two outside veterans (McLeod and Goodwin) and 4 rookies (Petrenko, Moss, Martin, Curnow). Next year the rookie lists are being increased by 2, a pitiful counter-balance to the draft concessions being handed to the GC in 2010. Thus we will be able to have 2 veterans and 6 rookies.

Our Irish International Rookie, Brian Donnelly, IS included amongst the 6 rookie positions. Effectively he replaces Petrenko on the rookie list.

Assuming that Moss is retained, we will then have 3 options:
  • retain both Curnow & Martin, drafting 2 new rookies.
  • retain one of Curnow & Martin, drafting 3 new rookies.
  • delist both Curnow & Martin, drafting 4 new rookies.

My money would be on the last of these three options, but I'm very much looking from the outside in.

This draft is likely to be a long one, possibly going to over 100 selections. Thus the last player taken in the rookie draft would effectively be the 150th player drafted (give or take). I'm not sure that there are 150 draftworthy players available, which may weigh in favour of the middle option.

The Crows already have Burton on the LTI list and as DrDave stated, the odds are pretty good that we'll have someone else injured by the time Burton returns to action. Thus, there will always be a position available if any of our rookies are good enough to seize their opportunities.

If we dont upgrade him then
(i) he is free to nominate for the national draft where we would undoubtably lose him (or use a pick ourselves)
(ii) if he is good enough to be on our main squad then he should be upgraded - he has thoroughly deserved his upgrade which does come with a contract and a higher wage
(iii) our 5th round draft pick (76) or even 6th round (92) are still available to us providing we delist/retire enough players (plus trade week may change this too)

NB - its the National Draft ("ND" i assume) not "PSD"
- "PSD" = PreSeason Draft which takes place after the ND

Thankyou Vader for making it very clear. I am of the opinion that both Martin and Curnow will be retained. Both showed progress during the year and as you rightly point out, is the pool going to be deep enough to provide an upgrade to these 2?

Good point about Burton being on the long term injury list for most of next year.

That certainly enhances the chance of us taking a mature SANFL forward such as Grima or Callinan on our rookie list for insurance purposes.

Can Grima be rookie listed if he has already been on a AFL rookie list? I didn't think he could.

Yes, he can. He's still young enough to qualify for the original rookie rule (under 23). The AFL recently changed the rules for mature aged rookies so that they are now eligible provided they haven't played an AFL game (previously they weren't eligible if they'd been on an AFL list). Either way, Grima is good to go.

Yes your correct I meant ND not PSD, have edited original post.

Wikepedea stares "rookies can be retained, with the players permission for a second or third season". So assuming there is an agreement between player and club, we can keep him on rookie list and upgrade him next year for Burton. Effectively giving us an extra pick in the ND which will be a much higher pick than anything we will get in the rookie Draft.
