Re: Jared Polec

Eagles urged to take a punt on Polec
CRAIG O'DONOGHUE
The West Australian
November 13, 2010, 10:45 am

SANFL high performance manager Brenton Phillips, who doubled as State under-18 coach this year, said the Woodville-West Torrens teenager gave West Coast the versatility and X-factor they wouldn't get with Gaff."I think he's got more to offer than Gaff," Phillips said.
"He's got more height so he can play as a forward, midfielder or even across half-back. We played him as a half-back as a 16-year-old. He can play in such a range of positions. He'd be suited to Subiaco Oval because of his run and carry.
"He's a bit like Stephen Hill. Jared is as good a player as I have coached.
"He's played very good league football. He's played league for two years so he's had about 15 or 16 games and he had an impact in finals. He is absolutely ready to go."

Jared Polec

Height: 189cm
Weight: 80kg
DOB: 12/10/92
Club: Woodville-West Torrens (SA)

Kevin Sheehan says: Left-footed long-kicking player who excelled in 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, winning All-Australian honours. Has pace and composure around goal with impressive form at senior level in the SANFL.

In his own words
What type of player are you?
I am a long left-footed wingman who is efficient going inside 50 and kicking at goals. My work rate around the ground is good and my defensiveness is one in a million.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble, and why?
The way I play is more a Stephen Hill-type player with the run and carry and an explosive left foot.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
My strengths are my run and carry, my work rate and competitiveness around the ground. My cleanness is great and my kicking is very efficient.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
The parts in my game I want to improve are my tackling and set shots at goal.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
I barrack for the Power and the way I showed that was by being a member and having their merchandise.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
My parents got me into football at a very young age. They have supported me from day one.

Emma Quayle.

5. BRIS LIONS
JARED POLEC
Vital information: 18, from Woodville-West Torrens. 189cm, 80kg. Onballer with brilliant skills on the run.

The rationale: Polec is a super-classy player and one of the better finishers in the draft pool. At this choice, the Lions need to take the best they can get.

Best-laid plans: The Lions were linked to Polec mid-year, then there was a lot of talk about Dyson Heppell, for a very long time.

Paul Daffey.

6. RICHMOND - Jared Polec
Height: 189cm
Weight: 80kg
DOB: 12/10/92
Club: Woodville-West Torrens (SA)
Draft range: 5-6
The silky wingman has the ability to burst clear of a pack before spotting up a teammate or kicking a long left-foot goal. His two seasons of senior footy in the SANFL have included two finals series in which he excelled. His otherwise inconsistent form suggests he needs a challenge. Richmond has a history of offering those.

Re: Jared Polec

2010 Big Footy Official Phantom Draft.

Jared Polec - 12/10 1992, 188cm, 77kg, Woodville-West Torrens/Seaton Ramblers

Polec gives Richmond exactly what they need - an outside runner with a laser pointer of a left foot and an ability to weave through traffic. He's a smooth mover, and a really nice height - the prototypical modern wingman. I've said Polec's outside, but not because his outside game is a worry. I think he could be an inside/out winger with few difficulties - but he's of more danger to the opposition in an outside role.

Polec's really a 70 m player - he'll run it 20 and kick it 50 - he'd work incredibly well with a lead up forward in the Tom Lynch mold - seeing him with the ball 80 out would be heaven for forwards.

There was a knock on his possession count earlier this year - but I think he's rectified that with big games in finals situations at SANFL level - the kid can rack up the touches, and is ready to play round 1. He's not seriously slight like Stephen Hill was, but he'll bulk up - the extra weight should make him a particularly scary unit both with and without the ball.

I've been on the bandwagon all year and I'm not about to get off now.

My rankings had:

1 - Swallow

2 - Day

3 - Polec

4 - Bennell

5 - Lynch

6 - Heppell

Lynch/Polec was lineball - and I agree with Foj that Lynch is Reiwoldt-esque, but the sheer hurt-factor of Polec with the ball brings me on onside. Kid is a player.

Quigley

Pick 6 Richmond

Jared Polec

DOB 12/10/92 Ht 188 Wt 77

Polec was one of the keys for SA this year and is a very promising outside player who can go in and win the ball when its his turn. He won more than his fair share of contested ball at the Champs despite this not really being his speciality. His performances at the Champs really put him up in lights. He showed great competitiveness, quickness and skills. He works hard for his team both when he has the ball and when he doesn’t. He will shepherd when called on to spring his man and after seeing the Lions players be incapable of doing that I can assure you those kind of things are important to winning games.

He plays with good pace and is very much a run and carry type of player. He is a smooth mover on the park and eats up the ground with his long stride. When you combine that with a long left foot he is the kind of player that can break zones apart. It is a common misconception that he has elite pace – he doesn’t. He plays smartly and uses what pace he has very well but timewatch speed he does not have. He did not do any testing at the Combine or State Screening (he played finals in the SANFL so did not attend the Compbine) but I am sure all the teams will be well aware of his previous results. But like I said he chooses his moments and certainly looks like he has pace.

With the ball in hand he is very composed and takes his time to evaluate the situation and take the best option or allow the play to develop in front of him. His kicking also holds up well under pressure which is not something which is not that common at this level. His delivery into 50 is excellent and he will in most cases put the ball to his forward’s advantage. When he gets into range himself he is a finisher and you can expect him to pick up close to a goal a game playing on the wing.

He is long and rangey and is good overhead in contested marking situations and is clean below the knees. He is able to swoop in and pick up a half volley at pace and continue on without losing much. In the contest his hands are not impressive and he tends to fumble a little and take a little too much time getting the ball out (i.e. slow hands). He returned from an excellent Champs and started playing first team football in the SANFL and he had a very strong finish to the year although perhaps he was not as impressive as teammate Brodie Smith in senior company. He has good core strength for a long lean guy and he maintains his feet well in the contest. He prides himself on his defensive work and he is a reasonable but not fantastic tackler. He sees himself as a Steven Hill type player and that is not a bad comparison but he is not nearly as quick nor does he have quite the penetration on his kicking that Hill has. On the positive side though I think he is more of an all around mid being better in the contests than Hill and more prepared to get in and do the dirty work.

Overall he is a very nice outside in midfield prospect. He has stepped up and played very well as the competition has gotten harder and there is absolutely no reason to think that won’t continue in the AFL.

#6 Richmond

Jarrad Polec (Woodville West Torrens) 189 cm 80 kg midfielder

Oozes X Factor, speed, poise, dashing type wingman, who will win contested ball and also have go forward. Will really completent Richmond’s existing mids nicely.

Knightmare

#5 (Brisbane) – Jarad Polec (SA)

Height: 189cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 12/10/1992

Recruited from: Woodville West Torrens

Style: Chris Knights/ Scott Pendlebury

Range: 4-11

Why: Very clean and smart user of the footy. Seems to have so much time. Good under pressure. Good skills. Goal kicking wingman. Good balance and poise. Long penetrating kick. Runs well with the footy. Not fast, but is smart with the footy in the way Scott Pendlebury is and makes the illusion that he has more time than he does. Can play inside or outside but I like him more as an outside mid. Has allot of AFL attributes and there is a fair bit to work with here. Could be a big time contributor and impact player. Can see him winning a fair few games off his own boot.

Snoop Dog

Selection # 4 (WEST COAST)

Jared Polec – Woodville / 188cm / 77kg

Profile : I didn’t initially rate this bloke that highly but as the year has gone on I have just become increasingly impressed with this kid. Was All Australian after a super Champs where his balance (great ability to stay on his feet in a contest) and penetrating left foot really stood out. Nice size and a bit like a few others in that he seems to have a bit more time than most. Adept at winning his own footy and spreading from the contest pretty quickly into space with his pace. Definitely someone you want the ball to be in the hands of when entering the fwd 50 as he excels at hitting targets. Finished off the year playing some really good senior SANFL footy.

Why Eagles: Suspect most if not all others (purposefully haven’t read any of the others yet) have Gaff here and he is the favourite. Eagles have inside mids and Polec is the best outside mid in the Draft who delivers them skill and pace. Polec is underrated on BF and and offers all that the Eagles need and is ready to go.

Similar to: Scott Pendlebury / Clinton Young

Roughie: Gaff or Darling.

Draft Range: 4-7.

Polec the Lions’ prized pick
6:19 PM Thu 18 Nov, 2010

AFL National Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan describes Polec as a “daring running midfielder capable of kicking a goal, with a decent size and a lethal left foot.”

“Two thirds of his possessions see him opt for his boot - which, with his accuracy, is something no coach will be caught complaining about,” Sheehan said.

“Polec works hard in defence and consistently does the right thing by his team.”

“He played all five games for South Australia in the NAB AFL U18 Championships where he averaged 20 disposals and a goal and earned All-Australian honours.”

November 16th

RICHMOND could be forced into a last-minute draft change as the Brisbane Lions seem likely to swoop on the club's preferred midfield target.

The Tigers want Ryan Griffen-like line-breaker Jared Polec at pick No. 6 in the AFL national draft.
However, in a late change of heart, Brisbane is set to steal the Tigers' thunder by grabbing Polec at No. 5, instead of the man the Lions were strongly linked to, half-back Dyson Heppell.

Polec's pain for mate
By Jason Phelan
8:45 AM Wed 10 Nov, 2010

TOP-10 draft prospect Jared Polec says the death of a close friend will be as much a spur as a painful reminder as he embarks on an AFL career. Promising West Adelaide footballer Corey Siemers died in a car accident shortly before this year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, and it affected Polec and the South Australian football community deeply.

Polec didn't take part in any testing at the draft combine in Canberra due to a quad strain suffered in the Eagles' narrow preliminary final loss to Norwood, but it was one of few injury hiccups in a year when his ability to mix it with grown men impressed AFL recruiters.

Eagles to serve up double trouble

THE surname is a bit of a giveaway, and so is the fact that they’re in the same team and rock up to training together every night.

But apart from that, you’d have no idea Jared and Daniel Polec are twins.

The Woodville-West Torrens 16-year-olds were born one minute apart but the similarities are few and far between.

SANFL Eagle, 16, is all class
19th September 2009

It hasn't taken long for Jared Polec to turn heads at Henley High School. "The assistant principal has a poster of me in her office," Polec said.

The reason? Polec, studying Year 11, is not only excelling in the classroom but on the football field, playing for SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens.

At just 16, Polec has joined the likes of Lindsay Head (West Torrens), Gavin Wanganeen (Port Magpies) and Mark Ricciuto (West Adelaide) in making his league debut before his 17th birthday.

"'I've found a few fans I've never seen before come up to me at shopping centres and I've had teachers come up to me congratulating me," said Polec, who weighs just 75 kg.

The Lions have identified Victorian Dyson Heppell, a superb user of the ball with an elite endurance base, and South Australian Jared Polec as the main targets for their first pick, No.5 overall.Polec is also on the Eagles' radar.
They are debating taking Oakleigh Chargers ball magnet Andrew Gaff or Polec with pick four.
Coach John Worsfold favours Gaff as he is a ready-to-go AFL player while others in the club see the long-term benefits in Polec, who could go on to be a superstar.

Re: Jared Polec

Emma Quayle's Personal Rankings (top 25)

9. JARED POLEC (Woodville-West Torrens, 18, 189cm, 80kg)
Rangy, classy onballer who loves to run with the ball. If the goals are in sight, he'll be headed that way. Confident, good at reaching for and controlling awkward balls, and keeps his balance. Generally gets his left-footed kicks where he wants them to go, and played some good senior footy in the last part of the year. Consistent involvement in a game is his challenge.
Where will he be picked?
Probably by Richmond at No. 6. A chance for Essendon at No. 8 and also in the Gold Coast mix for No. 9, No. 10 or No. 11.

This is his second Star Search nomination, having been selected previously in Round 19, 2009.

Rob Kerr

"We're very happy because part of our strategy was to add some run and flexibility to the team. We feel that we've met that criteria with the players we've selected.

"We traded up so we could get access to one of the quality midfielders and with Jared Polec we feel we've got a player with huge amount of talent."

Rob Kerr

"Jared is going to be able to provide us with plenty of run and carry and really add something to our line up. We didn't make the decision on Jared until late. When we had a hard look at our list and looked at what we needed the most, Jared was probably the best fit of the group in terms of the players that were going to be available.

"It was a real toss up between Dyson (Heppell) and Jared. Dyson is a terrific player and will have a fantastic career. We just thought from a pure list management perspective that Jared fitted our needs just a little better. I wouldn’t be surprised if a number of the guys we drafted play next year and we'd hope Jared would play a number of games."

Voss looks for a midfield recovery
Darren Cartwright[/b]

Voss said Polec, who the Lions took with the fifth overall selection, has the potential to follow in the footsteps of veteran triple Lions premiership midfielder Luke Power who can also pinch hit as a small forward. "He's a ball carrier, he likes to run with the footy and kick goals," Voss told AAP.

Rob Kerr: "He performed well in his senior SANFL matches this year and managed to poll nine votes in the Magarey Medal"

Nivelle Stibbard (GWS Recruiting Manager): "They took a sprinking of midfielders. Jared Polec is a beauty who dominated the SANFL finals series and had to be tagged. He really developed after the national championships".

Eagles might land in the AFL
Matt Turner
7th July, 2010

EMERGING Woodville-West Torrens midfielders Brodie Smith and Jared Polec have been tipped to have bright AFL futures following their standout performances at the recent national under-18 championships. Sheehan said Polec, who debuted for the Eagles' league side in Round 19 last year, ``had AFL player written all over him''.``His form from last year in the SANFL was well noted in recruiting circles,'' he said.
``And right from game one of this championship he put a stamp on it.
``He has a long left foot kick and wins the ball inside and outside.''
