I was reasonably impressed with Rivers' game last night. He looked comfortable not that there was much pressure. I know WCE was a rabble last night, but you could sense Rivers adds an important dimension to our defence as finals approach.

He's in at present, and we won in WA. Let's see us play a real team next week, a real contender, and see his contribution.

Was very solid last night and will get better with game time.
I have no doubt that will contribute well to our overall team .
Gives us a 3rd tall who can play on mids/smalls as well.
Good defensively and can take a mark.
As mention will be in best 22 unless injured.

This.

We become a bloody difficult team to cover when Mackie and Taylor can both drift forward.

This X 1000
You can see the 10+ years of defensive experience in the way he plays - spoils to the right areas , keeps the ball in front, strong in the contest , cool under pressure.
Priceless that he can be relied upon to do his role and allow Mackie to attack and Harry to drift forward. Rivers can also play on talls and shorts which gives us so much flexibility in September :D

Reasonably impressed is a fair call. After all he was on the third best opposition forward and was playing for a team that applied sustained all ground pressure limiting clean entries to the WE forward half.

imagine riv cum finals, yeah deer ta headlights maybe cause of pressure early but biiig addition :) plus another sacred heart college product, Glenelg <3

Realistically, WC game was not a real test. Their forwards got nothing all game long so really wasnt tested - but you can only play who is out there. I think it was the perfect environment for him to get some confidence up however.

He is not the quickest bloke but what he brings is the freedom for other to play off and attack. And dont forget too, he has been a handy forward for the D's. We all talk of HT and Mack sliding forward. Riv has the ability to do that too and it would not shock me in the least to see him do so at some point.

His spot will depend on who we face - as his limitation is speed on a small forward type. Still expect him to be around for most games however.

Also his 150th next week im led to believe. Milestone game!!!!

Go Catters

It's the versatility he provides and the options that it gives the coaching staff that is the real plus to having him in the team. I think he's always been pretty solid - we're not going to get a Scarlo-like 25 possie, set-up-the-play game from him, but he'll do the team things right and he'll allow us to have an option if a particular player gets off the leash. Plus now we don't need to have Mackie playing a shut-down role, and he can be freed up somewhat.

He will be a wildcard in the finals because we can put Mackie on the wing or Taylor forward
This!
If we come up against a team with a small forward line or that only have one monster forward (Lonergan) and then a medium forward (Rivers) and Hawkins is struggling/out injured, we have a special weapon in Harry. Imagine him and Pods clunking marks all night long?

Not sure about Fremantle and Sydney, but it won't be happening against Hawthorn. Taylor will be needed where he's at his best - centre half back - against Roughead. While Lonergan minds Franklin.

If we get to play them. It's a nice option to have. But it's still that, an option.

Rivers is the perfect option for Gunston, leaving Mackie free to do his thing

Agreed. But the point is Taylor won't be used up forward against Hawthorn, unless we're in deep trouble and are rolling the dice. Because he has to stop Roughead and we can't afford to not put him there.

was good but had an easy night so will get a much needed workout against Sydney this weekend.

Like Lingy said...his versatility is the key, allows us to release Mackie as Rivers is strong enough to compete with a tall but can also take one of those hard to match up types who are 189-192cm in size.

Needs to really push hard and run as much as possible so his fitness begins to peak at precisely the right time for us.
Still a good 2-3 weeks away from finding his best form imo.
