I was reading the Advertiser this morning and came across an article that quoted Craigy as saying he wants to draft a defender to replace Bass. What do people think about jarred rivers from melbourne for maybe a Third round pick?
 
Great player but struggles to get onto the park, would be interested, but won the rising star award a few years back and would possibly command more than just a 3rd rounder.
 
Im not sure if a 3rd round pick would do it but yer wouldnt mind rivers if he could stop being injured all the time. Could provide alot of flexibility to our team so i think we should definately have a look

Pretty much.
Unless he wanted to leave or they'd given up on him, there's not much point in Melbourne trading him now. His value is about as low as it could be on the trade market.
Would be worth a lot more than a third if he could make it onto the park, but, as it is, clubs probably wouldn't risk anything more than a late pick for such an injury prone player.
Just not a trade that's likely to happen.

Doesn't make it impossible to trade him, but I would say that his trade value has declined because of it. Won the NAB Rising Star and really hasn't done anything since due to injuries. I personally do think that Rivers will be traded, then again it just depends where dean Bailey and CO are heading

Draft or trade?

I'm hoping draft.

I think Stevens can cover Bassett's role for at least a year or two, and hopefully by then we'll have a young kid demanding the position.
 
Aaron Kite looks to be a goer for when Stevens isn't up to it anymore
no real need to trade for 1
if we can get Rivers for 3rd rounder then i'd jump at it but no need to actively look for 1
definitely should at least draft a key defender in the mid rounds (3 or 4 or 5)
 
If we could pick up Rivers for a 3rd round or less.. then lets get him. Although I'm still a big fan of holding onto as many picks as we have. Going to be the most important draft for 6 years probably.

I would like Kite replace Bassett and play HB for the next 2 years before moving to the wing / midfield

if it was quoted as 'draft', i'd assume Craigy meant pick up a defender in the draft. with Bassett's retirement, i'd think that would help push Kite into the team next year though...and speed up his development.

haven't heard any talks about Rivers though; maybe he's still signed on at the Dees.

i haven't seen to many melb games over the past 2 seasons, however the games I have seen Rivers has always played forward as a lead up CHF

I have not seen Rivers that often in defence

he defenitely strated his career as a defender, however in recent seasons has played forward
 
Yeah it said draft defenders, i was just proposing the idea of going for a ready made "Young" 23 year old defender, who is from SA and you know what your getting.
 
You guys would be stupid to NOT be interested in him.

He's quite simply one of the best defenders in the AFL. He'd command a big price.

Injuries have kept him back, sure. But the fact is, he's simply way too good at CHB to go for anything less than a fist rounder.

While I agree with you and I would like to get a 1st rounder if we were to trade him I can understand why he is "underrated" or probably undervalued by opposition supporters is because whenever they see us play it's more often than not Rivers is injured and not playing.

1st round your kidding yourself, he is injury prone and as yet has not put together a string of outstanding games

what justification do you have for a first round

Rivers would be good. Could give Knights and Reilly some company in the rehab room.

Our defence is fine. If we're going to pick up a player from another club, please let's get someone who kicks goals.
