hey SA fella's

saw that Jason Torney was delisted - has been a great player for u guys - loved him when he was at the tigers and showed when he went to you guys he was all heart and class - just wanted to say well done on a great career Jason - you have many admires at both both adelaide and richmond:thumbsu:

was his time really up though? with a few others retiring and walking out on the club - thought he may get just one more season - he provided me with what was my favorite "non Richmond" footy moment of the year - with the huge running bomb goal in the finals minutes of the hawthorn final - unfortunately it a minute later - it wasn't so sweet:(
 
Was a victim of the huge amount of players all the same age approaching the end. He lost out because he is worth less to the team next year than Goodwin, Macca, Edwards.
Pity, Torn was one of my favourites but I can see why the club made the choice.

Very sad to see him go. Yes he was getting old, but he had a lot more to offer the team than some of the other guys on the list. Great player :thumbsu:

Right on. It's all about player list management, and that's what has cost Torney his spot.

Doughty would be gone too, if he wasn't contracted. He would know that 2008 is his last season.

OK, I'm gonna' get a little scientific on your arses, but here goes...

With any AFL squad, I reckon you've got to make sure you have the right balance between 'developing' players (roughly speaking, players that are aged 25 or younger), and 'non-developing' players (aged 26+). We are now looking a bit better in terms of that balance. In fact, if you compare our current squad balance (after yesterday's delistings/promotions) with the benchmark (Geelong) our squads are just about identical in terms of developing versus non-developing players.

Crows = 23 players aged 25 or under, and 12 players aged 26+
Cats = 24 players aged 25 or under, and 12 players aged 26+

Now, obviously the Cats have the more talent, but at least we seem to have a better mix for 2008. Both in terms of performing well in 2008, and also with a big eye on the future.

p.s. Torney was a fave of mine, as well. :(
 
Stupid decision. 'List dynamics' is irrelevant if a player has just had a great season and is good for the team.

Another dumb decision by the idiot club at the Crows.

He will be missed, had a very good 2007.

Probably wont be picked up by anyone else now though, even if he does deserve an opportunity.

I would have considered paying out Doughty's contract to keep Torney.

Good luck to JT in the future, as he has been a great club man. Doubt you find anyone who would have a bad word to say about him.
 
Highly respected by all at the Crows.

I do believe this is a mistake as he was still playing very good footy.

But in the cut and thrust of it I am also pleased the club are being proactive with the list management.

We will miss him no doubt.

Its nice to know he is respected by the tiges as well. :thumbsu:
 
Great player, will be missed.

The 2 things I will always remember him for are:
1. Classy, skillful & honest player
2. His mouthful to Cornes in the ultimate showdown.

Sad, but necessary decision.
 
That comes as a huge surprise to me. He has been great value for both our clubs and was shattered when he no longer played for us. To think too old at 30/31!!! You have to admire a fella who goes about his business without all the crap that surrounds some players!!

A fantastic player for Adelaide and Richmond. Very talented. Finished on a high. Sad to see him go. No way I can see him continue at another club as he is 30+.

Bingo, we're not short of coin and if the crows are serious about development, particularly in our midfield, then Doughty (and I also believe Shirley too) will not get a game next year.

I'd even go as far as to say that the role that Torney would perform would be equally as important as whatever Edwards/Goodwin can do for us next year but I guess our backline will still look pretty solid without Torney, our midfield is an unknown at this stage.

Could NOT disagree any more. We lost a lot of hard nuts this year in Hudson, Roo, Torney, Mattner.... The LAST thing the club will need is to push out its hard nuts out of the side. What you are left with is a bunch of receivers and no one to put the body on the line.

Shirley is a dead set certainty to get game next year and plenty of them. He will be an integral role player for us next year. With the departures we have had in the last week, if anything, Shirley's value to us has just increased!
