Yes Jack Reiwoldt is the next big thing in the AFL

 He is?

Plenty to prove yet does young Jack. Or Cleve Hughes for that matter.
It's only early days but I wish everyone would stop suggesting they will be guaranteed successes.

Schulz's development is ahead of them at this point, despite his disappointing season.
He commands a good defender and creates a contest which draws heat away from Richo. The same cannot be said of the other two youngsters YET.

He kicked poorly again on Sun but three goals instead of three behinds and he's done his job.

Schulz stays for the final year of his contract. If he flops in 08 punt him but until then he stays.

Schulz's workrate was good, presented a lot, threw himself at the ball regularly, picked up 8 marks which was an indication of his effort. His forward pressure stuff is way above what it used to be which was the key worry with him.

WoW, a common sense post instead of someone with the blinkers on trying to shove their opinions down everyone's throat.

Well done jezza.
Refreshing.

I`ll see your aggots and raise you .... no good , never has been ... never will be.

The difference between us and the top sides is they jettison the deadwood after three or so years .... we hold onto them like winning lotto tickets...... "coz he kicked 5 once 4 years ago" ..

Let's compare us to West Coast then.

Lynch and McDougall didn't debut until they were 19 (unlike Schulz who debuted at 17 because no player at Richmond has such luxuries).

Lynch did bugger all in his first three years, which takes us through to the current stage of Schulz's career. In 2004 he played 22 games and kicked 6 goals. His possession tallies to the same point as Jay is at are almost identical.

In McDougall's only decent season, he averaged 8 possessions a game and kicked 35:29. He kicked 14 goals in his other 4 years. They still held on to him until he was older than Schulz was.

Then we get to Gehrig's 6 years at West Coast...again, debuting two years after Schulz did.

Shall we discuss Geelong's key forwards? How about the Roos?

Schulz debuted 5 years ago, but he started at 17. He's had a lot of injuries along the way - almost to the same extent as McDougall - and still hasn't had an injury free pre-season with a now mature body. He's contracted next year and it would be sheer folly to throw away a 22yo who has displayed on numerous occasions that he has the talent required. He's lifted his workrate and is doing all the right things. When - not if - he fully clicks, he's going to be the top-class FF we don't have.

sorry for creating discussion on a chat room forum ... i will be sure to run things by you first in the future so all opinions shall concur with your wisdom o` sage one

i usually agree with you idgaf, but not on this one. i too am disapointed he didnt have the year we all hoped this year, but other clubs do hold onto key position players as long as we have given him, and i think it would be foolish to let go of him now. he is still only 22.

Nah i think we need him......When Richo goes it will be Sarge / Riewoldt / Hughes in our forward like and by christ i like the look of that!!!!!!!!!!!

3 talls and 3 smalls is what our forward like should be like.

he will be a important part of our future.
richo needs to play up field more is better from long ranger when shotting.
schulz will be a KP forward he worked hard last night chase well good forward pressure. seems to be down on confidence well come back after the pre season well an prove he is worth keeping.

Another year on the contract, and we have a bunch of kids younger than him, so gets a 12 month life to get his 'lackadaisical' big A into gear because it won't be long and there will (hopefully) be a few 'pushing' him down to longer stints at Coburg at the rate he is developing!

Everyone defending him saying he is only 22...been injured....well I can remember quite a lot of games where he has been 100%, but I am trying to remember a game (except that memorable day in Brisbane-quite a while ago now), where I have thought...'damn that Schulz had a day out!'

Apparently there was one last week though:D

But then again, right now I have Petts at the front of the trade queue, so don't get me started there!!

---- Epitaph ----
"Here lies Jay Schulz, couldn't get a kick in barn full of horses"

In remembrance of the few dudes at BigFooty who picked Schulz as a dud from day one. Howled down by those who couldn't pick football talent if jumped up and bit them on the goolies.

Hall would have been on Lloyd or Hille/Laycock, or playing first ruck if he was fit last night, and we would have been a better side for it.
Insert Essendon would have been the better side if hall played

If anything richmond supporters are the exact opposite. We've seen that much CRAP over the past 2 and a half decades that we are too harsh on players. FFS I have seen numerous ppl on these boards want to can tambling, JON, meyer among others bc they struggle in their 2nd and 3rd seasons. Schulz is still young enough to come good. I'll put em on the line and back him, he'll come good, the boys got game.

We are far more feral about our coaches than our players.

If it was the other way around, maybe we would've turned the corner earlier.

Nyuk nyuk....
Saw them at the arena in Brissy this year. wouldnt mind seeing "the descendants"

Give the kid a break goddamnit'. He's only 21!

Actually he will be 23 about R3 next season. So if he gets another contract with similar performances to this year, we will know we are going to be bottom dwellers for a few more years yet.

A 2 year new contract for him would take him to 25, without having done any special at all. He owes RFC quite alot already, he needs to start paying back real fast...like consistant 2-3 goal games, with 5-6 goal bags thrown in. There are quite a few 22 y.o. 'kids' impacting games regularly!

My apologies bud, I was looking at the "AFL 2007 Herald Sun" Lift Out which has him as a 21yo (typo error maybe).

He won't get another contract with similar outputs to this season but he will be at Tigerland next year. Kingsley's retirement has virtually guaranteed it.

I suspect he knows his arse is on the line and I expect we'll see Jay Schulz come to the fore in '08.

If he doesn't it's adios amigo.

Sure mate, there's no way in hell Hall could have managed to pickup the 5 hitouts and 13 possessions Polak got, or the 16 possessions and 9 hitouts Pattison got, or the 15 possessions and a shutdown job on the massively dangerous Hille that McGuane did, or have only allowed Lloyd 8 shots on goal from 10-11 opportunities like Thursfield did, or have picked up 15 possessions playing by himself like Moore did, or have equalled the output of Schulz or Reiwoldt.

Hall never reached those lofty heights. :p

I remember you as someone that had a lot of common sense...what's happened in the interim?
