Jed Lamb?

Interested to know what has happened to him and where he's at?

Prior to the draft there was a lot of noise that we were going to draft him. I read up on him a bit and really liked what he brought to the table.

He was being described as a Stevie J / Daicos type, wore coloured boots and knew where the goals were.

When we drafted Smith, a lot of Hawks fans were squawking that we'd missed the goal-kicking half forward we'd been aching for.

I know he's had some injuries and with the drafting of Morton and Spangher, the progress of Rohan and Jetta and guys like Goodes, O'Keefe and McGlynn spending time forward, what are his prospects?

Hopefully he gets a game soon and bags some goals against all bar us.

???

Re: Jed Lamb?

Patience people. Goodes was on the list for 2 or 3 years before he debuted. Plenty of time for Lamb to come good. He has the talent and self-belief, just needs to show the resilence and determination.

I was watching the (red button) Foxtel coverage of that draft and as it came time for Hawthorn's pick the mics were open and someone on the Hawthorn table asked "Have Sydney picked yet?".

I've always wondered if the Hawks thought Smith was Sydney bound if they didn't pick him.

(Hawks first selection #19, Sydney's 21).

Goodes actually debuted his second season on the list and won the Rising Star Award that year.

There is obviously still time for Lamb, but not getting a game in the NAB Cup is, IMO, somewhat concerning.

In some ways I hope he doesn't play this coming weekend as it may indicate he is carrying an undisclosed injury and that is why he has been absent so far.

It is also worthwhile remembering Lamb's background.

Father murdered, raised with his 7 siblings by his mother in a country town.

Sure Lamb wears the colourful boots, appears to have a deal of self confidence, but maybe he is finding the transition to a professional environment in an interstate city somewhat challenging and that is impacting his football?

His childhood nickname of "half a job" and the reasons for it, may also indicate an issue he has to overcome if he is to be a successful full time footballer.

I hope with a bit of luck and persistence that things will work out well for Jed and the Swans.

I stand corrected. Drafted at the end of 97, debuted in 99. I just finished reading his speech and was left with the impression it was longer.

Adam Goodes said:
...I have seen some great players with a huge amount of talent have long, successful careers at this club.

I have also seen players who have had a lot of talent who just didn’t make it. And believe me, I know it isn’t always easy. When I first came to this club as pick number 43 in the 1997 draft - when some of you were only four years old - I readily admit, I struggled. I didn’t have a stamp that said I was going to win a Brownlow Medal - I had coaches who berated me, who rode me hard, who picked out all my faults and let me know about them day after day.

I didn’t get a game until 1999, and it wasn’t until a few years later that I felt established in the side...

its a great speech. I'm sure Jed got a lot out of it.

Re: Jed Lamb?

Eade was known to talk to him pretty bad, no different to a few others

Tadgh gives the impression of Rocket in a similar light. That tough talking, overly agressive style may work some of the time but you just need to know when to use it and when not to.

I recall seeing on the news one night rocket absolutely tearing Goodes a new one at training. This was close to his (rockets) departure so obviously the stress was on him and time was ticking. I just remember thinking right then & there, that's it. Rocket's done. Time to move on. We don't need that kind of crap at our club.

Goodes flourished under Roos but i feel that Eade did all the hard work (ground work) with Goodes, and got the lazyness out of him and take AFL more seriously and make him a more professional player.

When he first started he needed a kick up the arse, because he wasn't doing justice to his talents and potential, but when he did get more established he needed to be nurtured and that was perfect timing for Roos to come in

Troy Luff always got it worse than anyone.

Also is it just me or does anyone else think insulting a footballer and telling him he is next to useless is not the best way to make him a better player?

Re: Jed Lamb?

Back to Jed, it's definitely a fitness/AFL readiness question but the year out injured is quite hard on the young kids.
I watched him in a couple of NEAFL games late last year and he is very talented and will be a star.
The Swans are very patient with their players and recognise that not every kid is ready to play when they are drafted.
It philosophy underpins our draft strategy and the development players.

Y'mean like Malcolm Blight's bake of David Pittman, the Adelaide ruckman? Wasn't that seen as a catalyst for the Crows going on to win two flags?
Probably fairly standard in previous eras.

well if the shoe fits...

seriously its not a good way in my opinion, however growing up in a footy environment youd wanna have thicker skin if it effected you that badly.
Its an emotional game, it all depends who says it.. for some its just part of their vocabulary so you cop it sweet... then stab his tyres with a screwdriver after training.
