I'm getting a little concerned about Jeffy. First of all I love the guy, he brings a lot to the team, but his overall game has dropped a lot over the past month or so and he needs to get a bit of touch. With so many out this wont happen, but if there is no improvement soon he might need to.

Obviously his chases etc are still there, but could we get more out of another player up there.

Thoughts?

Small fwd no harder gig, needs some time up the ground on a wing.

dont want to see him out of the team but maybe a game as a sub just so he comes on with real fresh legs, and let him tear the game apart with his legspeed, that should give him some confidence to get back to wear he was.

Don't want to see him out of the side either, but he has to be dropped.

It is all well and good to say move him up the ground, but all that would do is move the opponent he will be jogging behind closer to our goal. Jeff is starting 18 every day of the week, but what he has dished up for a month now CANNOT be tolerated if we are to stop the lethargy and malaise that is infecting our group at the moment.

Ps. He will be back, and he will be part of our next flag. A stint in the VFL would not be the end of the world.

definately agree, only issue with a week in the vfl is we are running thin on reserves due to bad run with injuries.
thats why i think the sub vest is the issue it makes a statement to him but still utilises his skills

Refuses to bodyline the ball.
An arm half extended does not constitute a contest.
Yarran forward next week may do Garlett the world of good
Bullants play so Give Jeff a message then get him back for Geelong

I just don't think it is enough. I posted in another thread that I can't remember Ratts ever dropping anyone with a fairly respectable name. It's always AJ, Bower, T-Bird, Sugar etc who seem to cop the brunt (would love to be corrected on this).

Garlett getting dropped would be fairly big news, not that I'm saying it should be done totally for that, but it would at least send some sort of msg. Perhaps it is a bit much after a 10 goal win, but he was insipid, and so were we really, completely flattered by the score in the end.

Also, what would dropping him actually cost us? His input has been effectively nothing for a while; perhaps a re-structure of the forward set-up would spark something that gives us a lot more until we get our best team (including Jeff) on the park and playing well.

I was only concerned with a few things he did where he lost his feet and lost a few contests and his man got away but i think our forward structure is a mess and our forwardline has been given limited oppertunities with our poor clearance and midfield results. He's got a hard role, he just needs time though a spell in the 2s if Buckley has another game might not be a bad thing. Good to see him chasing well because a lot of our guys' chasing had been well below par. Judd and Betts chasing has been really poor lately but Garlett is still putting in.

Jeffy is not putting in as he should. He made a short chase today, the ball was handballed to the next link and he actually held on to the player that had just disposed of the ball and made it look like he was being shepherded so he didn't have to run to the next player. That and a couple of boundary contests where he just assumes the ball is going out and runs past it and it hasn't gone out, have absolutely floored me. He is fair dinkum taking every opportunity to conserve his energy if a shot at goal is not on offer.

Perhaps it is because he stills lacks the tank to play further up the ground and is getting tired easily or maybe he is carrying an injury or something. He just doesn't have that infectious effort at the moment.

Indeed... some are untouchable when it comes to criticism, cant remember Judd's last chase to be honest and Eddie's 5 goals is supposed to camouflage everything else.

Noted how others around here feel about him right now, but I cannot remember a player who has endured more shitful bounces than Jeff in the last month.

Seriously, go back and watch the games (okay, the Saints and Adelaide games will be hard to watch, stick with today and GWS). It is shitful bounce after bounce and if half of those would have turned right, he'd be kicking two a game and no-one would be complaining.

I think he's competing for a spot with Collins, and while I've got my fingers crossed for Andy, he'll probably get a couple of weeks off to rest up. Hopefully Jeff makes the best of the next couple of games.

Judd gets a pass because he is the one making the play in traffic, extremely hard to chase when you are constantly recovering from getting dragged, scragged and getting off the ground. Judd is always trying to recuperate while jogging back towards the play. No excuses for some others though who don't have anywhere near the physical toll forced on them.

While I am not very happy with his form or effort, the above is spot on.

You have unwittingly HIGHLIGHTED the problem. I posted during NAB Cup that he plays like a millionaire. If he can't one grab then more often than not, that is it.
The "shitful bounce" excuse does not wash, every player gets those bounces, 95% of players will prop, take body pressure or back track to create a contest, if Jeffy can't get the flashy or easy grab, he doesn't get the pill. Too often he attempts the miracle goal (checkside, snap etc) rather than taking a step or 2 to straighten and maybe take some body contact.
You will argue chasing and tackling merits, while they need effort, it does not constitute a hard act to drag someone down from behind.
Like most, I absolutely loved Jeffy when he came on to the scene, he did all of th hard work needed to get a spot in the team. Effort was never in question. We all believed with maturity he would be an absolute star. The effort has dropped off and the maturity has not come. He is living on past efforts and the excitement factor. (May I point out that only 1 Motlop remains in the AFL, the less flashy one).
Needs motivation ...... big time.

Not one thing wrong with this. Like I said, it would not be the worst thing in the world for him to run around in the magoos. Christ, it may only take one week, he gets a bit of confidence back, comes out and slaughters the not-so-quick Cats - was it two or three seasons ago when we did them by 6 at the G on the back of Eddie and Jeff running amok?

I thought Jeffy was going to be in for a good afternoon.

In the first 2 minutes the ball came down to our back 50 and Jeffy laid a bump on a melbourne player (cant remember who sorry) the melbourne guy seriously laid there for a good 30-40 seconds in pain. It was right in front of me and I was laughing that Jeffy could hurt someone, but at the same time thought we might be in for a night of Jeffy attacking the ball, man and contest hard.

I think he will come good.... lets just hope its soon.

Just has absolutely no confidence whatsoever at the moment. Runs past the ball too often and fumbles like no other. And the worst part that he needs to stamp out of his game is when he does run past the ball he just suddenly stops and doesn't bother going back for a second effort. Been really disappointing Jeffy. A run in the 2s is prob what he deserves at the moment.

I know he's small and skinny but he let's too many tackles slip. A real concern at the moment.

This thread reminds me of a thread on St Kilda board before playing us with Saints supporters calling for Milne to be dropped. Milne came out and destroyed us! Sure Garlett doesn't have the runs on the board that Milne does, but I think Garlett was one of our better players last week (included kicking 3 goals) and it will turn for him.

Surely Ratts knows something we don't because apart from the Adelaide game which was serviceable, possibly inspired by Indigenous round, he hasn't been putting in his usual effort. .. Especially his second efforts but quite often the first is half hearted too. ..

I called for him to be dropped/sub after the GWS game where he showed a complete lack of interest from start to finish coming off a lean period. .. It also appeared to infect some of the other players, most notably, Mitch and Walker at times. ..

After today I'd be happy to see him made Sub to send a message and if he doesn't come on with energy and enthusiasm then a week in the twos. .. but I'll trust Ratts to do what he thinks needs to happen. ..

Massive fan of jeffy but hes been shit for a month. whether thats been because us as a team have also been shit for a month who knows.... whole team is going through something atm even Juddy is got some bad sort of fumble disease going on

Call it coincidence if you want, but his poor form has coincided with wearing those ridiculous boots. I don't care what people say about natural flair etc, there is no surer sign that a player has gotten ahead of himself by doing lairish things. If I was Ratten I'd give him the Hird/Reimers treatment. Sick to death of seeing Jeff run past a contest sticking an arm out rather than putting his body in. If he did this, he wouldn't get nearly as many 'bad bounces' as people are suggesting. And he doesn't look anywhere near as quick as what he was.

Jeff, like Gibbs, has particularly struggled when teams have upped their physical pressure on Carlton. Just not built for the hard stuff.

Really worried about the output players like Garlett will bring to the side come September.

Agree with most of the thread.
His goal tally is not so important at the moment, I wanna see him get back to the basics of running and chasing and using his speed. He's ****ing lazy right now.
