A shame, hey?

Damn! I tipped Hingis! Poor Martina :( She had four chances to win the match, but nerves got to her, and that, cost her dearly. Well done on Jen though, she never gave up, and I respect that in a tennis player. Shame about Hingis though, I really wanted to see her win.

Her 6th final in a row, worked so hard, and lost to the same person like last year. A real shame.

I hate Capriati. I don't mind Hingis, but I didn't want Capriati to win. Bloody hell Adrian. :( :p

Thanx a lot Jen. For coming from no where when all was lost, for fighting and scrapping so hard, u lost me $140. As if that's not bad enough, I had done all these multi bets with Martina in them and would have collected $2000!!!!!!!!!!

Today is a devastating day...

Wow, that was a good comeback by Capriati being 4-6 0-4 down. I wasn't really going for either one as I like both players, I just wanted to see a good competitive womens match! Good game!

Great final. Three setter, tough conditions, a great comeback, and two spunks in the final as a bonus.
I agree with you DCFC. Jen has been my favourite since she burst onto the scene 11 years ago. The last 12 months has been a dream come true. I did feel sorry for Hingis though losing in that manner but since Capriati did it, all is well. :D

glad Jen won...don't really like Hingis...didn't see the game but 4 match points...how did hingis lose???
Amazing game, Hingis jumped out early and Capriati looked too nervous and conservative. Hingis got to 5-1 with a double break and Capriati broke back twice to get to 4-5 but lost her serve again to lose the set. Hingis again got a double break for 4-0 in the second set though I always thought that Capriati could break back at any time and go on with it because she looked more dangerous if she played her natural game. Jen broke back twice again to be on serve at 3-4 but lost her serve as she did in the first set to be down 3-5. She broke back after Hingis had the first of her match points at 40-30 and Jen had forced it to deuce after a gutsy backhand close to the line. They both held serve until the tiebreak. Jen went out to 3-1 and then Hingis came back. Jen had a set point and Martina had 3 more match points but Capriati kept coming up with the goods on match point. Both players were exhausted and leaning on barricades and sitting down between points. Funnily enough, Hingis looked far weaker going in to the third set and it looked like Capriati would run away with it but Hingis got the first break of serve and Capriati peeled off 5 games in a row to win it. By the end, Hingis looked to have given up almost.

Well done to Capriati to win back to back Australian Opens After coming from all that way behind.

A great effort

Go Capriati

Now for Safin to win the mens single final

I was a bit sad that Hingis lost, she played faultless tennis up until 4-0 in the second set. She should of won the championship with one of her four match points, still both were struggling with the weather and Jennifer came up trumps. Womens tennis won at the end of the day

A well worn cliche but it is true. The last few rounds of the women's draw were filled with fantastic games. Seles v Williams, Seles v Hingis, Capriati v Klijsters and then Capriati v Hingis. Each were filled with breathtaking rallies which is more than you can say for some of the wham bam thank you ma'am Men's matches. Though this year the men's matches have been equally absorbing. Certainly makes a mockery of Marcelo Rios' criticism of women's tennis.
