Agreed. He should learn how to play forward by playing down back. Note Paddy Rider's successful shift to defence. His game against Cloke last week was excellent. White has similar physical qualities. But key backs need to read the ball well too.

Seems the club is trying to keep his value up in the trade market with their comments about him today, whilst actually hoping he comes good for us.

Interestingly this article claims he towels up Goodes in marking contests in training. Must be frustrating for both player and coach.

Edit : Just thinking about this. If Jesse can mark fine when the ball is kicked to a spot in practice it suggests the problem may be reading the play or reading the ball in flight - something Goodes does very well. Perhaps a stint in defence would sharpen his skills in this regard as he'd be led to the ball.

Maybe I am too much of an optimist, but I really enjoyed reading that article and it restored my hope that Jesse will one day find his spot. I don't think his problem is the odd brain fade. He doesn't really have that many of them. What he does on the field is usually pretty good - he has become a decent kick for goal and his work at ground level is very intelligent. He just doesn't do enough of anything. If only he could learn from Reid how hard a key forward has to work to present at contest after contest, he certainly has the physical and skill attributes to make a solid contribution. And I love watching his enthusiam when he plays, whether it is at senior or reserves level.

I am very encouraged to know that Longmire's not given up on him yet.

My thoughts exactly Liz.
Having said myself that he'll struggle to be given another game, I'm content that he still has another year on his contract meaning that next year will be crunch time for him. I doubt that he would me making much of a dent in our salary cap so nothing to lose by keeping him another year unless other parties are interested.
Ross Lyon & the Saints would turn him around I think!
As you mentioned, hard work is a forward's duty these days. Problem has been that he has been rucking & going forward when not in the ruck. He's probably just too knackered to do the things required & hasn't got the aerobic capacity of Reid.

I like your optimism with White Liz!
 
I reckon Jesse can be an absolute superstar. Horse and the coaching staff need to say: This is your position. You will play in said position for the forseable future. We will not move you around all over the place. As such you now will be able to identify the specific areas you need to work on improving as opposed to playing every role known to man and not being able to focus on getting good at 1 position first.

If they want him to be kpp foward then throw him fwd... Do it in this finals series and expose him to his deficiencies and allow him to develop ffs. Get him and Reid to work together and build a partnership over time. Surely that has to be the better thing for the club long term. Maybe try again with the recruitment of a foward role model (i.e. Bradshaw) that can be there as a support for the 2 of them for the next couple of years.

At the end of the day our best players had to develop and had to play through poor form as youngsters. Someone saw how good they could be and put faith in them and let them play even when they seemed to be out of their depth. I see massive potential in Jesse and hope the coaches sooner rather than later realise his potential needs to be nutured and developed playing first grade as opposed to an easy run about in reserves. Put the pressure on him and give him the whole of next year to prove he deserves to be there. One last year to finally show everyone what he's made of. And I think they should start that year now. This finals series. Give him the exprerience of finals and let him use that to enhance his development into next year.
 
Jesse has been given many chances to prove he deserves to be in the senior side.

Jesse has hardly played "every role known to man". He has been asked to play as a deep forward, and a second ruckman. He has failed at both. Cannot take a contested mark to save himself and is an absolute liability on the rebound.

Doesn't deserve a spot in the side at the moment, which is particularly damning given how poor our forward line is as a unit.
