Jessie, has had a load of game time now in the seniors, and is not producing.
Sorry guys, but he is a lemon. He has had many chances to step up and become
a dominant forward, but still keeps dropping marks, and not being aggresive enough in the forward line. Dont care about last weeks winning goal,or any suchlike bits of play he has luckily been a part of. If there is a trade Macveigh
thread, surely there must be trade White thread,i know who i would pick!

A "lemon"????

Wow ...

... and it's Jesse.

Wow, indeed, DG.

Bradmanstand, you're clearly influenced much by stats and so forth but go and have a look at the replays of the last 2 games. Watch how hard Jesse hit packs and marking contests, have a look how many front and centre crumbs were manufactured from such contests and then count how many goals came from them and get back to us.

I don't want to trade him but i do want to send him back to the reserves so he can learn how to take a contested mark. Right now i really do think Lewis Johnston could offer just as much in the forward line as Jesse White is currently offering.

How much football have you watched Lewis Johnston play? I mean, actually in the flesh ... seeing as you've never seen him play senior football for Sydney.

All Jesse White is doing at the moment is providing a a big target in the forward line. Johnston is tall as well so he could do that.

I really REALLY did not want to get into this (same as I was trying not to bite at those who gave McVeigh points either of the past two weeks, surely just to be inflammatory) ... but you're absolutely right, S120.

White was certainly dropping marks in the first half against Freo, but he still forced so many contests that benefited us. And he has very good hands for a big guy in terms of handballing. He slipped away at least two beautiful handpasses on the weekend that led to goals; one to Jack in the third quarter and one in the last quarter, I just can't recall the recipient.

And he did the same the previous week.

He also put himself in the right place to make the most of McVeigh's very smart handball, and then in the last minute seemed to my eye to take a very strong contested mark that helped save the game.

Last week he was extremely effective as the big forward presence that pretty much fcked up Hawthorn's defensive structure for the entire game.

Anyone who can't see that is, not to mice words, an ordinary judge of football.

I'm not denying White has dropped several easy marks, but that is not the be-all and end-all of a footballer.

It's becoming more and more discouraging to read some of the ignorant posts on this board, particularly from some who generally offer very constructive and insightful thoughts.

By the way, a "lemon" is defined, colloquially, as a machine or other product which continually fails to operate adequately.

Jesse White may not be overachieving right now, but he's far far better than "adequate", let alone "continually failing to operate adequately".

You're entitled to your opinion, but I'm curious, who is going to replace him in the Seniors? :)

Tricky one this. I wouldn't trade Jesse, especially without first taking a look at how he may fit into a re-jigged 2011 Horse led line-up. I still believe his potential hasn't been realised. The guy has shown moments of form this year but we all expected more. He's about to enter his 4th season in the seniors, albeit he only played a couple in 2008, so maybe that's when he'll shine.

Jesse has something about him that speaks of greatness but something's not clicking. Busting packs open and causing a spill is fine if you can't mark it but it's a second option. As for chasing, well the stats would suggest he may chase but never catches. Hey maybe the opposition players shit themselves and just dispose of the ball at the very sight of big Jesse bearing down.

I know stats don't say everything and not watching him live this year I'm prepared to accept he's doing the hard work but the questions is....Is he doing the right work ? Forward-wise he's down in a number of key areas. Moore beats him in goals contributed, tackles, marks, disposals, i50s, as does McGlynn and even McVeigh.

So not wanting to be accused of beating on Jesse I can only hope that he'll click over the off-season or Horse will work out what his ideal position should be. Maybe, like Leo Barry, he;s better suited to down back. His field play tends to be more effective than his forward work so maybe there's something there.

I agree he's been frustrating for fans this year but can imagine he's much more disappointed in himself. Don't give up Jesse. It will come.

Send him down back. Not necessarily immediately, but next year. The Lions did it with Daniel Merrett and it worked absolute wonders, and Merrett was in a very similar situation. Power athlete with bucketloads of potential that just wasn't clamping down the marks, wasn't influencing games.

Hmm that is an interesting proposition, BSA. Especially when you bring up Daniel Merrett, a similar kind of player, super athlete and struggling to kick goals consistently up forward.

We have a full book of good big bodied defenders (in the best 22 right now) though and Jesse will get better. He needs time and with time he will become a very good forward, i am very confident of that.

Merrett is one of the worst key defenders in the league. He's still playing seniors because the Lions have no choice.

I think that's a bit harsh on Merrett. Has been poor this year in a very poor side, got smashed on Sunday by Tippett and Sellar for example. But last year and the year before i always liked what he did, playing in a much better side of course.

Maybe it was harsh, but I don't rate him.

You're right, he's playing in a crap side.

I do think there is a similarity there between Merrett and Jesse though. Amazing athletes for their size (Merrett i recall is one of the quickest over 40m at Brisbane) etc. But yeh i want to keep Jesse in the forward line.

The last time this issue was brought up i recalled last year in the NAB Cup when we played Port and Jesse lined up on Warren Tredrea from the opening bounce and Reg started at CHF. Jesse got towelled up by Tredrea in the first half and Reg did nothing up forward then at 1/2 time they switched spots essentially. Reg beat Tredrea in the 2nd half and Jesse took some big marks and finished with 2 or 3 goals.

It was 18 months ago so perhaps it isn't incredibly relevant now, but i believe that that switch was for the best and they are now playing in their best and natural positions.

I argued it on the last drop-White thread. He's learning, and it's taking time, but I believe we have, in White, a genuine star power forward in our ranks. One of our own, to be persisted with, nurtured and allowed to develop as a forward.

I'm not sure yet if his best position is full forward or CHF, but I'm convinced he's a star in the making and I wish people would cut him a bit of slack at this stage of his career to the extent they excuse the obvious flaws in several more experienced senior players.

I believe it would be a shame, nay, a disgrace to let him become a star at another club.

Merrett has been shit this year, that's true, but he has had a terrific career before now as a key defender. The best spoiler in the league, one of the best lock-down players.

In any case, he's a much, much better defender than he was forward, so regardless of whether you rate him overall, the argument still applies to White.

Ha I remember that game. Pykey made his debut too in that one. ;)

:thumbsu:couldnt agree more. i was the one who started the 'White is the new Brown' thread, and I still hold true to that. He's gonna be great for us. 2011 is his season IMO

He's big, he's young, and he no longer has excellent long-term full-forwards up front to learn from. He gets a lot of attention from opposition full-backs, and he's learning how to cope with that. Meanwhile, he's improved his work around the ground so much this year.

I was frustrated with him earlier in the season, but on the whole, I reckon he's on track. I love him and Dennis-Lane in a forward line together. (Then again, I fell in love with Dennis-Lane after seeing him at Blacktown in the first NAB cup game and I am so happy he's playing in seniors now.)

Leave him. It's not like Roos isn't afraid to drop him or get stuck into him. He is obviously doing something right or Roos knows there isn't an adequate replacement with Bradshaw injured. S120 and goat summed it up. He is a young key forward and they are always the most inconsistent players in the game.

I don't agree with moving him into defence either. His goal kicking is too good imo. He needs to work on his marking ability but he is dangerous lining up for goal and he seems to have a pretty good technique. Long term Grundy and LRT are already set in defence. Plus we have that young guy in the reserves who is playing well. Forgot his name.

As long as he can smash the packs to bring the ball to the ground he will be of value. We obviosly didn't plan to have Bradshaw missing for so long.We should perservere with Jesse IMO.

Obviously he hasn't lived up to the hopes we all had at the beginning of the year, but any suggestion of trade is ridiculous. At the end of the day he's still a young KPP with <50 games under his belt.

If he's still struggling by the end of next season, then I'd start to worry. But for now there's no reason to go over the top.
