After the who would you delist thread I thought I would turn the attention onto possible trade worthy players. First player up is Joel Bowden. Should we trade him if a late first round/any second round pick was offered?

Nah, wouldn't get anything worthwhile for him RT - even this draft.

He does need to be hassled to get fitter for next year though, and told he'll be benched every time he starts to play cheating football - backwards, sideways and slowly.

On another note, both he and Richo come from Richmond families - that makes the situation a little different when you're talking about trading a player in his last year or two of football. A bit of loyalty to your own never hurts.

No.

Realistic Tiger has turned unrealistic lately.
Why is that? Is it because I raise issues that no-one else will? I have my opinions and I'll let them be known regardless of whether it upsets a few people or not. The idea of these boards I thought was to discuss the different aspects of the team. Some of my opinions will get people worked up and thats can't be that bad now can it? At least it shows people still have passion for this club. Just for the record I didn't say we should trade Bowden I merely asked the question as I have seen it mentioned a few times on various parts of this site.

No doubt a class act, and I reckon just young enough to be considered part of a Premiership team within the next three or four. Joel's a star player, immense skill, bravery and playmaker.

But he seems a bit out of sorts this year. Maybe it's the prospect of being part of a team that does not seem to be, in his estimation, a Premiership threat during the last few years of his career. Shane Crawford was exactly the same about two or three years back, and played that way for a season or so.

Joel would be a prize trade lure. He should command two Top 20 picks which is very tempting in a draft where we will already have 3 in the Top 20 (probably 2, 18 and 19 at this rate). If Geelong find a way to stuff up this year's Flag, they might consider him, but I doubt they have anything they're willing to part with that we'd want (eg. Pick 15 and 32 wouldn't complete the deal).

If the Crows or Power somehow miss the 8 (hence Picks 8 and 25?) , they too could do worse than to look at trading in Joel Bowden (Port in particular might be partial to former Tiger players, for some reason).

He's a potential Premiership player just craving a bunch of team-mates good enough to do their part. Doubt it will happen for him at Tigerland. No other player we have that we could probably afford to lose would carry the value of Joel Bowden. Don't be fooled be football supporters who remember him only for his strange role in our win over Adelaide last year - Joels is very highly rated amongst opposition football departments.

As for Richo? He's now a career Tiger. The time to trade him has well and truly passed. It would be counter-productive to even consider offloading him now. He's just too loved by players and supporters alike.

trade.
agree with some of what ghost and rayzor said

Joel becomes an eligible veteran next year.
I think that would make it very unlikely that he would be traded because only 50% of his salary will be counted towards total player payments and it gives the club the list management option of placing him on the veterans list.

yes

but only if it was worthwhile for the club

id take a 1st rounder along with a 2nd or 3rd round pick

We're probably looking at lining up with 15-16 blokes with under 100 games experience next year as it is. Have to keep some experienced guys around the place.

Bowden in the backline to organise King, McGuane, Thursfield, Connors, Polak etc for a year or two.

Ideally Newman has a good preseason and goes to the midfield - it is a luxury having such and experienced guy down back while our midfield is swamped - and if Newman isn't down back Bowden's leadership there becomes more important.

can we re;inquish his leadership role and forbid him to dispose of the ball?
That way,i would be happy to let him direct traffic, problem is,he directs it to him...................

It is refreshing to know, that at this stage, 73% of us have not lost our minds yet. I would love Bowden to get injured this week so the other 27% could really see how bad our backline would be without him. It is not his fault he is giving away so much weight and height every week. Ask Brad Johnson (same size) what he thinks of him. WAKE UP FFS.

It is because I rate him so highly that I consider Joel potential trade bait, Records. This is not a Ben Holland (Foot Soldier) type arrangement. This is more of a Brad Ottens or Nathan Thompson (General) thing.

The best part of this board is its capacity for bashing out ideas between supporters like us. I'm simply weighing up our chances of being competitive for a Flag during the twilight years of Joel's career versus the future value of the one or two players his loss would provide us with.

If the backline was to fall apart due to his absence next year that's indeed a worry but it could just as easily happen if he gets injured. He's had a damn good run in this respect, especially given that he's played through his last two broken bones, and it's not inconceivable that as he ages he could begin to sustain injuries which keep him out for long periods.

I agree with your points Ghost, my anger is directed at the posters who seem to have a genuine hate for the guy. Of course he is a very tradeable player, but I agree with your first sentence that he is still just young enough to be part of any success which may be coming quicker than people think.

its not about hating JB, I dont hate him, Ive been a big fan of his from the very start. I just dont think we will suffer as much as people think without him in the side over the next few years. Whats the worst that can happen we win 1 less game than we have thus far this season with him in the side? We are stone motherless last and that far away atm that i find it extremely unlikely that JB will be at the peak of his powers by the time we rise up and become a consistent finals challenging side. I honestly believe we'd be better served by getting some decent draft picks. He is definitely worth a high secopnd rounder plus a bit more, id take another edwards and connors type(s) every day of the week..

Mate, that hate thing is just so puerile. Anyone that pulls on a guernsey and bleeds and bruises for the Tigers is worthy of every supporters respect. If a player does this and is unskilled or incapable, then we should make judgements on his (or hers, as in the case of Aaron Fiora) future at the club based on a non-emotive or non-personal level. Even piss them off from the club if needs maybe (as in the case of Aaron Fiora). But while they're still bsting their nut, then they deserve support, and its much more beneficial for the club if they are supported.

To "hate" Krak, or Tivvers, or Plough, or Richo anyone else striving to make the Tigers better, is just so pathetic that it hardly warrants the dignity of being recognised. I think the eejits who claim such tripe know this, but they are trying to put themselves in a no-lose situation. If the player continues to be crap, they can use the "told you so" line, but if the player comes good they get to enjoy the ride like the rest of us. They probably tip against their team for the very same reason.

Hear, hear:thumbsu: Your not a true supporter if you continually "hate" players, coach or assistants.

sometimes when you let a gun player like a richo or a j.bowden go, the other players in the team blossom and the team is better for it. personally, i think richo is a champion but building a team around has not seemed to work. as for j.bowden, i wouldnt trade him for any other sweeping backmen.
