I have heard good stories about Joel Selwood but I live in Albury so I havent seen anything of him, can someone who has seen him play or seen him on the track give me a bit of feedback. Have also heard Varcoe is flying is this true?, who else is training the house down?

My son played with Selwood for the Marist Dockers a few years ago now.
U16 1/2 I think. Joel was a standout. Not just the average standout but everybody reckoned he was the best kid (at that age) to go thru Bendigo junior ranks. I have watched a lot of Junior and Schoolboys footy and he is clearly the best I have seen.

His best attributes? Gut running, smart running and able to get to the bottom of very contest and have an impact. Reads the ball long before opponents.

AFL is a much different story of course, but his brothers and Dal Santo who were lesser lights at the same age and they have done well - very well.

I was rapt that Geelong got him.

His parents are great people and he and his brothers should have leadership in them. But he has to prove himself on the field first.

Insider knowledge, I love it. The only sort of first-hand evidence you can really trust. Keep up the posts, please!!

What about Sylvia, is common knowledge around Bendigo he was an absolute freak junior, apparently the best. I think he kicked 9 from the guts against Assumption in a Sun Shield game. Assumption won by 3 points i think. Pitty he hasnt kicked on

Did not see this tread initially, so here you go:
Re: Best Up and Comer from Geelong
Talking to someone in the know here in the big smoke yesterday - no connection with GFC - said that we are probably unaware how good Joel Selwood is - not just best in the family but our best pick up, and very similar player to Luke Ball.
Same source said our 3 draft picks are genuinely good and will quickly show up the lack of skill in a number of our current players - hope he is right! Cannot wait for the season to start now - 2006 still sticks in the gullet - so my optimism is guarded but training sessions I have watched have been much more demanding and more 'serious' than in previous pre-seasons.

Sylvia is a very good player but I don't think he played his Junior footy years in Bendigo.

I think the Pios brought him down from up on the Murray somewhere. He would then have gone to BSSC while playing for the Pios.

Most people I talked Junior footy with felt the only possible way Joel wouldn't be very handy (or even a great) AFL player was his injuries. All the Selwoods have no fear and all have had injuries. Each was thin in Jumior ranks but as they fill out they should stand up to the punishment better or they might just learn to hit most packs but not include the suicide collisions.

Can't wait to see Joel in the real stuff.

Bye the way I think there is another Selwood in the pipeline!

Yeah Sylvia come from up here at Mildura. I used to keep a eye on the best players for the Pioneers while he was playing there and without exagerating I don't think I can remember a time when he wasn't in them. Would have won their B and F by a street in his last year there. Taking a while for himto hit his straps but will have a big impact when luck with injuries and confidence goes his way.

i really do wish we didn't waste out top pick on this very fast player that was only hyped in the newspaper in the last week of the nab drafting:mad: ............oh wait sorry i was thinking i was a port adelaide suppoter for a sec there:D . i'm was really happy to pick up selwood because of his good disposal and every1 on this board female dogging about how we dont have one midfeilder with good disposal even though i think kelly and chapman go alrite with the ball excepetly if there playin at there best.
