For those who do not know, this SNL star also had a solid movie career before he passed away, younger obviously than he deserved, however not unexpectedly given his health.

Watching uncle buck, so many funny lines delivered so well.

Yeah, John Candy hosted SNL once (and cameo'd twice). Might be mistaking SNL with SCTV.

Anyway, Planes, Trains and Automobiles is the greatest comedy of the 80's. Discuss.

Stripes was better. Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, Trading Places, Ferris Bueller, Big and Spaceballs.

And of course Revenge of the Nerds.

GTFOOH

Trading Places is only thing close to touching Planes, Trains and Automobiles of this era.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is nowhere near those. Maybe it’s a bogan likes cars, therefore likes that movie thing, but never got why so popular. Your list is much better.

It was a great movie. Its just that the ones I listed I would consider iconic, defining movies of the 1980s. Except Spaceballs. But that is just plain Mel Brooks brilliance.

I would also add Home Alone, but Im not sure if that was late 1989, or early 1990.

My favourite movie with John Candy

Every time I fly somewhere, I think of John Candy slowly removing his shoes and socks and grunting with pleasure. And the look on Steve Martin’s face.

I liked ‘Planes, Trains..’ because it had heart & soul, as well as dumb slapstick. It was a human drama story underneath all the gags.

Everyone who watches it can relate to both characters

It's a classic. One of Steve Martin's best too in his post Wild and Crazy Guy/Carl Reiner run (before he got Disneyed).
