Was an absolute star, let's show them how to play football on monday. Nothing better than knocking an in form team back to reality.

I'm having deja vu feelings of round nine last season, hence I'm skipping work and going to the game on monday.

Who's with me?

Just jumping in.

Saw this bloke play, man he could go,
totally one sided, but could spank the thing 70 yards,
and a sublime mark.

Actually saw his comeback game at the G v Richmond,
was never the same player, who could be.

Wilbur took a triple decker that day though.

Won't name the St Kilda player from '72,
but their team was infamous as a pack of dogs.

I'll contest that! I remember he could kick with his right foot as well !!

If you consider it was almost 40 years ago, Greening was ahead of his time a real natural! Some days he was unstoppable stacked up over 40 posession games with 6 goals a number of times playing in the centre! Unfortunately cut down by a Saint's thug at 21 years of age in 72. In the Brownlow that year, John only polled for half the season ,but finished 6th!!!

Always makes me wonder how many more flags we would have won if John Greening, Phil Carman & Darren Millane had managed full and uniterrupted careers.

I'd strongly suggest we'd be in front of everyone else.

Whenever my older brother talks about Greening, he always has a tear in his eye.

He says, he is the best player he has ever seen, even better than Buckley

Could kick either foot... watch what Thomo says in the video to confirm that.

Was the most gifted player I had ever seen

It would be a nice gesture if the Cheersquad made a banner .... or even just someone on the fence.

When Will the Saints apologise to John Greening?

It's not relevant to this week's match nor is it really relevant to the current St.Kilda team.

I was at Linton Street that day with my Duffle Coat on with number 22 signed the Great John Greening on my back (I also had my Viscount 10's in my pocket) Very sad day.
I still have the "Inside Footy" from his come back game against Richmond.
The day at Linton Street was interesting as a guy who lived in my street in Sandringham was on the bench for Stkilda that day. This guy was a made Pies Fan but was residentialy bound to play for StKilda (no draft in those days). Whilst he was sitting on the bench with coach Allan Jeans, assistant coach Eric Guy, 20th man Stephen Theodore (I think) plus a runner and a trainer he was told to testify at the tribunal for StKilda as the only person who saw the incident. He did but never played VFL seniors again

The other one was closed because you had (repeatedly) steered it in the same direction you're trying to steer this one in.

If others want to follow your lead and make inane accusations against the St.Kilda club as a whole, I'll close this one too.

On the other hand, I'm very happy for there to be a thread discussing and celebrating John Greening as a player. Clear?

I fear your St Blunda feelings will become an issue!

My Mum is exactly the same, Chase. I remember the first time I took her to see Bucks (his 100th against Freo at Vic Park - what a day!). It was her first live game since the 1970 Grand Final and after Bucks had again set up the Senior Saveloy she was able to look me in the eye and with a straight face tell me that 'Yeah, he's alright, but he's no John Greening'.

My old man does similar stuff

I may really rate a player and he agrees they are alright but they are no:
Greening/Milane for wingmen/Half forwards
McKenna as for tall forwards
Thompson
Daicos

Who equals any of those guys lol

I was talking to my old man about it this morning and he was saying it was the only time he has ever saw Len Thompson lose it apparently he went berko

I feel jealous that I couldn't fully appreciate any of them but Buckley.

We better have some more names to add to them over the new few decades.

sorry guys, just a quick rundown on what actually happened ?

So far i've got that he was a star, we were beating them and got punched from behind..

Did he retire after this?
How severe was the injury ?
Did stk players get fined, charged, reported even ?

I missed alot of those big names but I feel pretty lucky to have seen Monkhorst and Brown play. Brown gets alot of credit but I think its easy to forget how good Monkhorst was. I always liked him. And Graham Wright/Scott Russell :)
