John Klug (born 28 September 1965) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Australian Football League for the Adelaide Football Club in their early years. Klug, originally from Glenorchy Football Club in Tasmania, was recruited from the Woodville Football Club in the SANFL when the Crows first started in 1991. In the Crows first year Klug played at Centre Half Forward, although slightly built and against much bigger opponents for most of the season Klug performed well and ended up finishing eighth in the Crows' Best and Fairest that year. In 1992 Klug only played a handful games with the club due to niggling injuries he was then delisted and picked up in the Pre-Season draft by the Brisbane Bears where he didn't play a game.
John was drafted to the Crows at the age of 25 in their first year in the competition, 1991, after a career up until then spent at Glenorchy, and Woodville in the SANFL from 1988. John was known for being a player with an incredible amount of natural talent, but particularly for his monster handball, which some folks at Glenorchy today believe travelled at least 50 metres when he unloaded. John finished 8th in Adelaide’s Best & Fairest in ’91, but only managed 6 games the following year before a serious post-operative infection to his knee more or less ended his AFL career. He returned to Glenorchy as coach in 2003 and 2004, and still remains in the area today, working with the disabled and as an assistant coach at Lauderdale.

Klug took some time to push through to the highest level but was an immediate success with the Crows. The clever centre half-forward played 30 reserves games for VFL club Richmond in 1984-85 but then returned to his home club Glenorchy before joining SANFL club Woodville in 1988. Club best and fairest in Woodville’s final season, Klug kicked four goals in Adelaide’s first game against Hawthorn in 1991 and played 20 games to finish 8th in the best-and-fairest. But he played only six games in 1992 before a serious infection following knee surgery ended his AFL career. Later coached in Queensland and then Tasmania.

John Klug (Center Half Forward) has had arthroscopic surgery on his knee to remove bone fragments.
ADELAIDE CROWS centre-forward JOHN KLUG quits AFL footy at 27 after 12 knee operations in five years.
Other players with AFL experience picked up by Brisbane were John Klug (62nd overall) and Danny Craven from St.Kilda (78th overall). Klug, 27, retired from league football after two years with the Crows after persistent knee injuries. In the summer he took a position as coach of local Queensland side Mayne, but the AFL itch got the better of him and he decided to take the Bears up on the offer of playing center half-forward.

The Glenorchy Football Club has confirmed that John Klug will lead the Club in season 2004. The club signed Klug at the end of the 2002 season when Leigh McConnon resigned from the senior position because of work commitments.
"The club signed John Klug to a two-year contract and will honour that agreement. John is extremely disappointed with the 2003 season and is determined to turn things around in 2004". said general manager Shayne Stevenson.
Ah, a blast from the past, mighty Woodville Warrior John Klug, how is he going there, a legend at Woodville and one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet, tragically struck down in his prime by a sickening knee injury
John Klug was a very clever and highly skilled footballer; a master of the long handball across traffic to hit a teammate on the chest. If not for injury, despite a lack of pace, he would have been a top line AFL footballer.
Glenorchy coach John Klug has resigned from his senior coaches role at Glenorchy Football Club due to increased workload and family commitments, effective immediately. Klug, who coached the Magpies for the past two seasons, agreed to another year at KGV last month but has been forced to stand down.
The rumour that former Magpie senior coach John Klug has cancer and he is going to die are absolutely untrue. The GDFC is unsure of where this rumour started, but the man himself has categorically put these rumours to rest and stated that he is fit and well.
He has recently had a back operation and will be out of action for about three months. This is why he stood down from coaching Glenorchy Football Club. He has also has had a procedure to relieve pressure on his sinuses (as he has had before), which have literally been causing a few headaches. The story about the brain tumour is completely untrue.
