This has fail all over it. I get the whole minimalist approach, but I think they've gone too far when you need a pen and pad to store your contacts. I also think a phone that can't text in this day and age is pointless. The phone only displays phone numbers so I'd never know who is calling as I don't memorize the numbers of my contacts.

This could be a great phone for my grandmother who is in her 80's. She has a mobile but struggles to use the basic function of answering the phone, even after I have explained things a number of times. Wonder how much it will cost.

What? You can get phones that cost less than half of that with screens, SMS ability, MP3 functionality, FM radio, cameras etc. There's nothing to suggest this phone should have a higher price tag than those when it's most likely using technology no greater than what we saw in the 90's.

Marketing? Hype? Novelty factor?

There will be buyers for it, people who think it will be trendy or cool or want to be different from the masses. It's not meant to compete with the likes of Apple, HTC, Samsung, Nokia, SonyEricsson, etc.
