Crows get Carey, Torney; Johnson a Tiger

Adelaide has gained Wayne Carey and Jason Torney in a complicated trade deal involving Kane Johnson and three draft picks.

Adelaide gave Richmond Johnson and its first three draft picks – Nos 14, 30 and 45 – in exchange for Torney and Richmond’s first three draft picks – Nos four, 20 and 36.

Adelaide gave the Kangaroos draft picks four and 20 for Carey.

While Adelaide has gained superstar Carey and quality defender Torney, it is left without an early draft pick.

Adelaide’s three picks at next month’s national draft (November 24) are Nos 36, 61 and 77.

Adelaide, Richmond and the Kangaroos agreed to the trade deal in Melbourne on Friday morning.

Not happy about losing pick 4 but gained pick 14 so not a bad result in the end. Considering we got Rodan at 33 last year I hope we can get someone as good. A first year player would be good.

Much the same way nut. Dissapointed to lose an early pick but it could have been worse. Previous admins would have lost the 4th pick and not picked up 14.

Things are looking up.

i don't follow you about getting rid of the wings...but Cogs Johnson and Rodan are highlighted for the vital role they will play in the season ahead.

the big question here is and id say we wont know if this was a goodthing or a badthing regarding giving up our no4 pick for johnson until whoever nth picks up in the draft and how he devlops.
however it is common knowledge that this years draft is not as strong as last years or perhaps the year before that.would we have traded no4 pick last year?NO!!!!!

here we get a dual premiership player with plenty of games uner his belt and with skill by foot and hand and he is ONLY 24.[not to mention being a tiger supporter before being picked up by the crows].

i say very well done by miller etc in getting the deal done and also retaining at least a 1st round pick.

cheers!

I dont want to get rid of the wings.. for the second part I also think that Zantuck has a vital role and also Ottens. Otto needs to start to get going again or this time next year he could be at Adelaide or Port :(

Zantuck will be very good for us..we know what he can do around goals too....Otto will be a Tiger for life I hope...he had a very good year...but it didn't make the TV replays. Hilton , Poyas, Fiora Campbo, krak'r will all have an impact. I'm super keen for 2003.

The team above is a very good team. Torney never really hurt teams in the midfield, but he was a good defender. He can be covered though...the ball might be going in gaspars direction less and less now that we have a better player in the engine room. It will be harder for taggers to close us down with Coughlan, Rodan and Johnson all crashing through.

having said that , Johnson can't be expected to carry the expectations of a flag to Punt Rd.

We still Have Bowdo, Tivvers, Fiora and Dragga aswell in the engine room but maybe another midfielder wouldnt hurt. I would like to see Blumfield at Richmond too.

I've been against the Kane Johnson trade from day one ... I just don't rate him that highly. That we have traded our Pick 4, which could've very well ended up a Pick 2 by the time the AFL finish with Carlton !!, just exacerbates my thoughts on the matter.

This guy better freakin' well dominate for the next five years ...

trading is full of risks.. this is one of them.

Well I think that Kane will be good. He has been a Tiger supporter his whole life now he has the opportunity to play for his club.

You never know. Look im just trying to be positive about the situation that we are in. The trade is final and theres nothing you or we can do to change it.

Ghost you know my philosophy is that you build clubs on draft picks...I think we have erred by too quickly trading our picks in the past. I can't forget skipping Jason Johnson for Steinfort. This time however, I think it's worked.

What have we traded ?

Torney for Johnson. We are better off.
4 for 14
20 for 30
36 for 46. This year the consensus seems to be that the talent will plateau through the draft rather than decline. Even though the draft may not have the depth, nor the superstars of previous years, it is considered that all the youngsters drafted can play a bit. So I hear.

We have taken Couglan 2 seasons ago at 25 ; Rodan last year at 33. we have 14 and 30 so we can expect two more players of that calibre, in addition to Johnson. I believe Otto and Richo would have slept well last night.

:)

And for what it's worth, I'm happy with the Johnson deal.

cheers

With the benefit of a couple of nights sleep and about seventy beers, I'm starting to come around on the Johnson deal, R18. Your post also offers a logical argument, and let's face it, once I see the bloke in the Richmond jumper, I'll probably get over my hang-up about the whole arrangement pretty quickly ...
