Jones' kicking?

Agreed - sometimes I think Jones does not realise he has more time and tends to hurry his kicks. Hopefully this should ease when he feels there is more support around him.

Overall great day for the Dees - Much better effort and final scoreboard result, despite making terrible mistakes by hand, foot and mind that resulted in at least 5 easy Geelong goals.

Next week is the key and how we translate todays effort.....

Go Dees!!!!

It is the way he plays.

Jonesy is a typical in-and-under player but one thing I think that separates him from other extractors is his ability to run all day, as you'll notice he gets a lot of handball receives as well as hardball gets.

I think as guys like Morton and Buckley (Who hasn't the greatest skills but has plenty of pace and knows how to use it) develop Jones will be taught to feed the ball off to these guys.

That's something which can be improved over time. He'll never kick like Nathan Buckley, but the overall package is very good. He is a freak - winning clearances, laying tackles, running to contests - for 120 minutes every week.

I wasn't overly impressed with Jones' around the ground work today but some of his work around the packs was decent. We were killed in the clearances but he stood up reasonably well.

He does need to improve his 20 metre stabs a fair bit though.

He's had a few big games (9, twice, 10 and 11 last year) but then has a lot of games with 0-3 tackles. I still think it's ambiguous as to what is considered a tackle. I'm sure that there is probably a definition somewhere but, on the day, there is going to be some level of subjectivity to it I think.

There were many players wearing Melbourne jumpers today guilty of turning the ball over by foot. And by hand for that matter (Carroll).

it's becuase he gets the ball in and around the pack, his kicks are often rushed, and not to an option... it's nothing new, he did it last year too...

just something for him to work on, his efficiency will improve as the side improves, as he won't be under pressure as much...

Maybe he'd benefit by playing more like Cross who handballs it to open players out of packs instead of bashing it on the boot. Of cause if the team got better and shepherded for him he would have more time.

The Dogs also have a lot more run from HB, whereas Melbourne is more stagnant in that regard, so there isn't always someone running past for the handball receive.
I agree with the point he gets a large percentage on his ball in contested situations, which limits his ability to compose himself before he gets the kick away, however I think his kicking still requires some work. He could compose himself and steady a bit more before kicking too, I think he rushes himself a bit too.
Although, currently, the team isn't too cohesive and confidence is down, I think this mental side of the game has a greater influence on performance than many believe, it isn't always a matter of ability.

agreed.

and the way he thinks hes rambo, sure hes tough, but he thinks he can get through any tackle, he gets pinned atleast once every game.

At least he's got the confidence to try and take the game on. I reckon you guys did so damn well to get him; such a great player

i think again that's because he's under the pump... he's usually looking around for a good option to give it to, but there isn't one so he tries to break a tackle and get free... when our midifield is working better, he'd be able to dish of a handball and get out of trouble...

I remember Craig Cameron(or N.D) saying he was very suprised that Jones was still there at pick 12.

There was some good talent in that draft though.:thumbsu:
