Jordon Bourke accepts Jeremy Cameron challenge

IT is a good thing that Brisbane defender Jordon Bourke relishes a challenge.

The Lions are making a habit of handing tall orders to the son of former Geelong grand final captain Damian Bourke.

On Sunday, in Sydney, Bourke will play his second AFL match as the inexperienced Lions defence attempts to contain the dangerous GWS forward flotilla, led by emerging star Jeremy Cameron.

It is not the first time the 20-year-old Lions Academy graduate has been thrown in the deep end.

We all know that bourkey played a key foward role as a junior and last night i think we know why he is a better forward than defender and i reckon that is were he should be kept as a full forward he looked dangerous last night and i think we should persist with him at full forward

I didn't think he looked dangerous at all. Good mark in the first but looked very slow and reactive.

I thought that decision was really critical to how we played. We did roll the dice as Bourke is not the fittest bloke going around so, along with McStay and the resting ruck, we were at risk of getting destroyed on the rebound (which happened late). But Bourke provided an additional target which gave so much flexibility. That he presented as a dangerous option was even better.

I thought Bourke really straightened out our forward 50 entries for the first three quarters, or at the very least created uncertainty among the Crows defenders, and his versatility and obvious competitiveness will probably see him retained on our list.

Great coaching move by Leppa, in my view

Watching the game it was evident that he's a natural forward. Was providing strong leads into space almost every time the ball went down there and sadly was often ignored and only had it kicked to him when he was standing still with two defenders closing in.

Possibly part of our midfield not being used to kicking to a leading forward since Brown called it a day, so I hope Bourke gets given a few more chances up forward from here. If teammates spot him with a few of those leads, he could be a really handy forward option for us. Shows much more there than he does down back in my opinion.

Also hope he isn't judged off what happens next week. If history is anything to go by, we won't get the ball forward much at all against the Dockers in Perth.

I reckon it would be worth while swapping close and bourke around and having bourke as a forward and close as a centre half back. With a forwardline of Bourke, Mcstay, Freeman, Hammelman, Possibly Dixon, Schache, Hipwood and Buzza that looks pretty potent for the future

I think it tends to be Hanley, Rich and Rocky who spot and confidently kick to leading options in the 30-50m area out from goal. A lot of the younger guys seem apprehensive about missing and getting burned on the rebound. In hindsight, it possibly makes sense that his opportunities dried up as Hanley went off (and we got less ball forward). I could imagine his style of lead being more fruitful as Pearce regains fitness and Rocky gets back in the side.

I was pretty impressed with Bourke up front.

I was surprised to see him take a mark on the lead 60 metres from goal. It feels like it's been forever since I've seen one of our players present like that. He reminds me a little bit of a less athletic Josh Bruce.

I always wondered why he was earmarked for a defensive tall ever since we drafted him, when he had shown good leading patterns and strong hands as a key forward in junior ranks. I understand plenty of defenders are failed forwards, it was just strange he was never given a shot up forward over the past 3 years until now.

probably could be because the chance of a rookie forward making it are so low, we had guys like lisle, close, freeman, paine, staker, merrett, cornelius taking up these potential spots as forwards

I always wanted to see close down back. Good size for a defender and can run all day. Maybe a year or 2 being led to the ball might improve his forward ability.

Yeah it probably would improve his forward ability. I just think its a logical swap Bourke is a natural key forward and looks comfortable there and while watching close he has always looked more like a key defender

Bourkes a rookie so wouldnt we have to use a draft pick for him to be elevated permantly. (Serious question as i dont know the process).

Yeah, kinda. He will effectively be our last draft selection. You get the same number of selections as you have list vacancies so Bourke would just be allocated a list spot and we'd have one less live draft selection.

Two Lions backmen delisted as turnover continues

THE BRISBANE Lions have delisted Mitch Golby and Jordon Bourke.

Bourke, the son of former Bears and Geelong ruckman Damian, was taken by the Lions in the 2012 Rookie Draft and played six games in his three seasons.

Primarily a key defender, the 20-year-old played five games this year and was an effective forward at times, kicking two goals against Adelaide in round 13.

Player Reviews: Part Nine

Bourke played the most senior football of his career in 2015, notching up five games for the Lions. His relative maturity within a young Reserves side facilitated his selection in the Seniors squad, being upgraded to the senior list to fill spaces created by injury. His best game came in Round 13 against the Crows, when he kicked two goals. He collected 16 disposals against the Bulldogs in Round 12. Bourke tore his meniscus in the Reserves’ loss to Sydney University at Blacktown in July ending his season. He was delisted at season’s end.
