Josh Gibson --> Hawthorn

Agree, it is a win win for both clubs. Hawthorn have a need for a great defender and already have a team to contest a premiership for the next 3-4 years, North don't, hence need picks which they got.

We get their #5 best player for 2009 and they get 2 draft picks in a shallow, but uncompromised draft before GC comes and plunders it.

Even with Gibson we are still after a "great" defender.

He is an upgrade on Tom Murphy and thats about it.

Croad was our #1 defender who was A Grade but his future is seemingly done and dusted.

This trade looks to be a win win but with North having the greater risk (both upside and downside) to deal with.

As a north supporter i truly believe we won this deal.
Gibson is a good player, but nothing special and plus we gained 2 picks which gives us 4 inside 41.:)

I agree.

Now North fans can stop being flogs about trading with hawthorn.
This time you guys win one.:)

No we both won! You guys were after a ready made defender to slot into your backline; we wanted to move on a player who stated he didn't want to be with us and we gained to picks to use on young players; win/win.

Regardless of who will or has won trades in the past and present doesn't really matter. I see the NM V Hawthorn games as a feature of my season every year. I think we have built up a healthy rivalry (on field) through player clashes and close games. This year in Launceston went to show the grit the 2 sides show when playing one another in the pouring rain. I think although hawthorn got some great talent through trading with us I wouldn't swap some of the moments Thommo gave us kicking goals to get us over the line in some close games. Hay I could forget about all together and Picioane well....... I cringe at times thinking of dealing with the Hawks because of some of these trades but as I said its a mixed bag. Now we are in the position Hawthorn was in years ago where we need to build on our young list with more picks and losing a player most will agree to disagree on is part of that. IMO a postive outcome (short term for one and long term for the other) is surely the way most supporters see this trade, unless the one eyed goggles are on too tight that is

Anything over 25 in this draft is chump change, not to say you can't strike gold. Pick 69 netted a decent kid 2 years ago ;)

On a different note, what went down with the Motlop deal. I know you guys were filthy with him leaving but how did Port treat you guys in the negotiations? Seems like the Burgoyne issue but with the shoe on the other.

Dunno, as others have pointed out, we've specialised in finding guns late on in recent years.

As regards Motlop, the filthiness had a lot to do with us with us supporting him through severe injury only for him to bail on us, especially claiming he was homesick and going to Adelaide which is still a fair way from Darwin.

Port as I recall weren't too bad, but they certainly held the whip hand.

13 pages on Josh Gibson?

I think North win this deal on paper - Gibson is no more than an average defender.
