It will eventually cause problems when a team has a free hit at the next Eddie betts, lance franklin, SPS, Burgoyne, Ryder, Rioli etc
I doubt it because these are indigenous kids, effectively a minority in our game, particularly in Tassie.

Then again, the AFL did change father son twice by raising eligibility from 50 to 100 games and then after Geelong got a heap of them, changing the price you pay for them.

Afl always makes changes once there is a perceived disadvantage to the majority. I expect once a top prospect is picked up in these academies that the rules will change

I think "eventually" is understating it. How many very good players would be eligible for nomination through these indigenous and multicultural academies in the 20 years prior to their introduction? Now compare it to the brief list for the NSW zones that get people up in arms these days about them "always being AFL heartland". It's good to see them introduced but it's also pandering and potentially overcompensation.

North fans, would you give pick 1 for Kelly?

Yes, but would probably want some exchange of picks as well.

Wha?

Surely GWS would be the ones wanting pick exchanges.

He's a former #1 pick who's proven to be well and truly worth it.

Therefore, he's worth more than an unproven #1 pick.

He's a pick 2 that's out of contract.

Pick 2. Out of contract. And recruiters olace an enormous premium on pick 1. It has been said that pick 1 is worth 50 per cent more than pick 2 etc etc.

The reality is if he's not going to re-sign with them, they lose bargaining power.

Us having pick 1 also takes away any threat of him not making it to us in the PSD for free.

Of course you will, I was just talking in that hypothetical :D
the sad part for us is we are never in the conversation for the quality GWS players looking to leave. would love Kelly, Hopper or Kennedy, any of their elite mids. just another disadvantage of being in the northern most market.

we did get Jake Barrett but he was a NEAFL star not AFL.

Your benefit though is that a run down the bottom means you can uncover your own versions. It won't all be in vain.

That's a dangerous road, if your club plays tough we shop him around. Nobody wins if we dont agree on on a trade, brinkmanship is risky though. It will take a modicum of goodwill to get the best outcome. There will be posturing no doubt.

Hopefully gets to a bottom four club, they hand over a top four pick and that's all, GWS pick up a bust and the playing field is leveled somewhat.
I think Carlton has a patent on that type of trade with GWS.

GWS appear to deliberately target a higher proportion of Vic Metro kids so when they do lose players there is a bigger market to trade with, they're playing a long game that is currently working well for them

Every media commentator seems to be running with the line, he will sign with us yet as far as this joint cares nimrods are talking about trades and PSD.

That "line" seems to dropped out of circulation in recent days.
