If I was GWS, Kelly's form over the last month or so would have me ripping up my salary cap plans and renegotiating as many players contracts as I could to get him the cash he needs to stay - I think he would genuinely prefer to stay in Sydney, but the Giants need to close the salary gap between theirs and a growing list of clubs' offers.
Agree - and we should be renegotiating as many contracts in order to find more money for him. The kid is jet.

I agree that the sentiment is built up a little too big but the key difference is not one of those players had a father playing for the club targeting them. Big difference between barracking for a club and seeing most kids hero in their dad wearing a particular stripe.
Problem is, he didn't see Phil playing in that stripe. In fact, Phil played his last game of his 61 game career for North about 10 years before Josh was even born!

The way a lot of you guys talk about Kelly and his "North pedigree" you'd think the Kelly's were the North equivalent of the Danihers at Essendon, the Shaw's at Collingwood, or the Ebert's at Port Adelaide, but I reckon half of your board on here wouldn't have even heard of Phil Kelly until Josh was either drafted, or about to be!

Two years ago Bailey Rice had the opportunity to play for the club he barracked for AT THE TIME, who his father played in a PREMIERSHIP FOR and who he got to WATCH HIM PLAY FOOTY FOR, and yet he chose to play for another team.

Why? Granted his father played for that team as well, but that likewise was before he was born and I reckon that reason would have been way down the pecking order of importance, when it came to making a decision.

Just as it was for Josh Dunkley, who was apparently in no hurry to play for Sydney, even though his father played there and he presumably barracked for them at the time as well.

Sure if it's a line ball decision and he's right on 50/50 when choosing between the merits of two teams, the fact his father played for one would likely push him to choose that team, but surely most would put much more stock in where they feel that club is at, where they see it going, how he would fit into the team, how much money he would make there, what other perks are involved, where that club is located geographically, whether he has any friends there or not and so-on, before the romanticism of playing there because his father played there over 30 years ago.

That sort of thing might be a major motivating factor to someone really young, but probably not so much for someone in their 20's, who stopped barracking for that team 4 years ago, who is sitting down to potentially plan the next decade of his career.

Could anyone see a straight swap of Kelly & Martin?

If GWS cannot afford Kelly's possible new wage, then there is no way they could afford Dusty's which is likely to be higher.

That is unless Dusty fancies gaining several shiny Silver Cups and is happy to forgo say $600-800K per year to do so.

Nice wall of text but if you think that Josh has had no exposure to Phil at North then you're dreaming.

I also don't get the comparison to Bailey Rice whenever I've seen it. Dean played two less games for St Kilda then he did Carlton. Dean's success at Carlton is moot as Carlton at the time of Bailey making the decision was an absolute basket case. It's not comparable at all to the perceived and speculative difference in quality between North and St Kilda. Also nobody apart from Saints fans could even pick Bailey in a line up of one since that draft happened.

It's time to get serious. There is no negligible pull to bring Josh to St Kilda over North. He isn't homesick. If success is a trigger he's staying at GWS.

Its obviously the long term high end contract otherwise he would stay (hopefully still will).

But if Saints are offering the same (or any other club) then he will weigh up who has a better chance of finals.

Which will be down to his personal thoughts. No matter how much we bang on about dads or best friends or fav hair dresser etc.

Yeah, I get that but there has to be a significant difference in the chances of finals to outweigh any other personal attachments and any realist will see that it is (I know I like to spout this term) negligible. If we cut all the garbage out (club barracked for, dad, mates, distance to travel) the offer is really going to come down to money. Will the Saints bid more than North can in the end? We don't know. We've seen it mooted in the media North thinks they can get both Martin and Kelly, there was an article a couple of weeks back where the Saints reckon they can get two gun players on 850k each. That seemed a bit restrictive to me. Will they go all in on Josh? Good luck to them if they do. Any team that poaches him is rolling the dice either way.

I dont get the pull and tug from saints and north fans. Whitfield will be at saints next year and Kelly north. Kelly has hit his straps now and Whitfield is coming along nicely. win win

Can see North pushing this to 10.8 over 9 years.

Think the $$ will be fine but getting the deal done will be more tricky.

Perhaps a swap of firsts for 2017 and 2018

The old club is more important than any single player rule applies though, in my view.
I think the club's done a brilliant job of list management so far (yes I'm biased). One balls up and it could go to hell. We're still new and we will have cycles over time, but we definitely dont want to rush into it. The impact on the space to retain other players, and even possibly the effect on player morale if we put too many eggs in one basket has to be considered.
Not saying you're wrong, I would love it if we could find a way to keep him, but other things need to be considered as well.

My money would be saying you have 0/2 there but thanks for playing.

I see one being pushed out due to cap squeeze but not both. If one goes there is no way you don't keep the other (even if it means you have to say thanks for your services to kennedy, hopper or smith).

Probably because getting Whitfield instead of Kelly is like watching somebody being given a Rolex watch while you received a friendship bracelet.

Ha true but it is a mighty nice bracelet. Would be happy to accept it if i can't get the rolex!

Whitfield hasnt devolped his body yet either because of his shoulders. I think this guy is a jet now and when he develops a bigger bod who knows what he could be. Saints fans should be excited

His old man played 5 years at the club, had to retire at 28 due to shocking hammies and then settled here in Melbourne. Josh grew up as a Victorian kid whose old man played AFL footy for North. He barracked for that club up until he was drafted, and then of course, professional intersts intervene.

There is no doubt about what he was dreaming about when he was growing up kicking a footy in the back yard.

Correct.

GWS are probably using certain elements of the media to push the StKilda barrow for their own obvious gain.

It will be interesting to see which person/outlet gets the scoop when Josh decides to speak.

Players decision. Thats why they havent signed yet. gws will have to suck it up

If he's willing to go to North then you'd think that's code for every other club to make an offer. I'd be disappointed if my club wasn't balls deep in this.

Your club is having issues in just retaining its current list.
