Im only 22 so these lads from manchester were before my time, but i think they are very under-rated and were one of the most important groups to come out of the late 70s post-punk and new wave era.

Favourite songs?

Mine in no order are

Atmosphere
Love will tear us apart
Ceremony
Age of consent
True Faith
Blue Monday
Bizarre Love Triangle

There are many versions out there (just check Wikipedia's entry), but you may want to check out Orgy's version of "Blue Monday."

If you ever get the chance as it's often on SBS keep an eye out for 24 Hour Parrty People.

It's all about Joy Division through to New Order and a bit at the end about the Happy Mondays.

A few guest spots in it by famous people of that era oncluding a very bald Howard Devoto from the Buzzcoks.

Sound track of my youth Post punk scene Melbourne
I didnt like it then
It was in every club every 5 minutes
I was into Stooges ,Birthday Party,MC5,Velvet Underground,Captain Beef Heart,The Jam,Pere Ubu,Modern Lovers,and Tom Jones

Haha yeah seen it about 8 times now i'd reckon.

Steve Coogan is bloody funny in it.

I don't think XTC are more influential than then Joy Division, i just like them better ;)

Andy P fits in much better with my love for the quintesential english song writer from The Kinks - to XTC - onto Blur.

I came across an interesting interview with him earlier this year, sounds like tinnitus unfortunately is making things tough for him.

I saw Happy Mondays i think it would have been in the late 90's.

And unfortunately they were bloody awful, Sean Ryder is a just a big fat drug pig.

His singing was shocking. Bez was the only highlight of the gig.

And around the same time i saw New Order and they on the other hand were awesome live.

Cool bands. I don't think New Order is underrated but Joy Division may be. Shadowplay, Love Will Tear Us Apart and Transmission are great songs. Bizarre Love Triangle and Blue Monday are great songs but Touched by the Hand of God, Thieves Like Us and Temptation aren't given as much recognition as the first two New Orders songs mentioned.

Shawn Ryder can't sing live but Happy Mondays are still a quality band. Just stick to their studio recordings.

Yeah their studio stuff is nothing like their live stuff.

Having said that i still think drugs have ruined them as an artist for mine.

Joe they were not underrated in Australia at the time - they had followers like some bizarre religious cult

They are still around playing.

I saw them about 2 years ago, still sounded good then.

Their "Songs to learn and sing" compilation is one of my most played albums easily over the years.
Is that an 18-track compilation? If so, I think that's the one I saw at HMV today for about $10. Should have picked it up.

It's only got 11 songs on it, but all 11 are great.

Missing a few of their greats like Show of Strength but its still good.

But i'd say if the one you saw has songs like rescue, do it clean, the back of love, killing moon etc its worht getting :thumbsu:
