Apologies for the following as I'm in a bit of an anoraky mood.

Speaking of Ceremony, is the version you have the first recording (as a trio) or the second recording (after Gillian joined the band)?

Anoraky! That's quite funny!

The Ceremony 7 is the 3 pce recording. At the time I was an avid collector, I had the 12 first, and ONLY bought the 7 when I found out that it was a different version.

Listening to JJJ on Sunday night , at the moment they are celebrating 30 years and they were re-capping the history of the Hottest 100 . For those not in the know it started out as the hottest 100 of all time .

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" won the inaugural Poll and went on to win a couple more i think .

I am not sure who the guys name was but they were interviewing a bloke who i think was Joy Divisions producer at the time .

He said that working with Ian Curtis was simply working with genius .

That there sullen image\persona could not have been any further from the truth . They were the biggest practical jokers he had ever met . Went back to thier flat after being at the studio one evening and all four of them spent the first 10 minutes checking all thier stuff , seeing if anyone had sawn the legs of thier bed , seeing if thier food had been pi.sed in etc. When he went to leave all the handles on his car had been "jammed" and when he turned around they all started hurling eggs and flour at him . This is what they were like all the time .

Talked about LWTUA , very interesting stuff . The original album version of that song has very short , clipped vocals on it , which was pretty much Curtis` style but the guy suggested they re-record it with a different vocal style ,to sing it in a more true style - draw the notes out longer ,put more emotion into it . He lent him (Curtis) a couple of Sinatra records , told him to have a good listen to the way he sang and come back and tell me what you think . A few days later they re-recorded the song which is the version we are all most familiar with today .

The guy said that " Love Will Tear Us Apart is one of the most profoundly beautiful pieces of music ever written " ....... agreed

Wish i knew what his name was , very interesting interview

Production at that time (Joy Divisionj-New Order) was being handled by Martin Hannett. Probably responsible for some of the "Ambient", "Textural" feels on the early records. New Order got tired of him after "Movement". The band, basically, felt that he was stifling their output (or thereabouts). A genius producer nonetheless. Produced some BRILLIANT tunes for JD/NO. I don't think anyone else could have done those songs the justice!

BTW-He's been dead a few years.

As The Legend posted, the producer's name was Martin Hannett. However, I think he was quite a mad bloke, so I doubt he would have been interviewed.

In "24 Hour Party People", there was a darkly humourous scene about Hannett's funeral.

With the comments about Curtis being a genius and his description of LWTUA, I reckon the bloke being interviewed was Tony Wilson.

There is a very early version of Temptation that is on the "Retro" box set that came out last year . Have you got that ? If you haven`t , get in the car right now and head down to your nearest JB and pick it up . 4 CD`s , one is a pretty much straight out Greatest hits . One is a devoted fans picks , a lot of more obscure album tracks , the third is all re-mixes and the forth is a live CD . Best 88 bucks i have spent in many a year .

QUOTE]

I went and got myself a copy of Retro today at JB which included a 5th limited edition cd with rareties such as Transmission live, Such A Good Thing, True Faith Morel Remix and a 17 minute version of Elegia.

I was also going through an old trash & treasure market last week and found myself a copy of Ceremony 12" for $3 which i was quite pleased with.

Words cannot express how annoyed i get when the true punter who supports the music industry and is passionate about thier music , goes out and buys new releases , only to have these new releases turn up 6 - 12 months later with limited edition CD`s attached to them , it really effin makes my blood boil .

I think the record industry should be looking after the true music buyer and not just the bargain hunter who waits for the "nice price" and sifts through the bargain bins

The boffins in marketing must have decided that bands should hold stuff back and when sales of thier latest efforts start to wane they whack on the "limited edition" to get things going again . For mine that is so wrong

I agree 100% in what you are saying there IDGAF, so many times i have rushed out and bought a new release cd only to find a limited edition come out a few months later, especially if your a real fan of that artist.

Talk about double standards, not wanting people to illegally download songs which is fair enough, but then rip off fans with making them buy 2 or even 3 versions of the same album, sometimes just for 1 or 2 extra tracks.

Having said that, i'm pretty sure the Retro Pack was originally released with the limited edition overseas and here in Australia, but i guess i was lucky that the version i found today must have been one of those.

If that is the case then i would love someone to explain the logic in that to me .

Are Australian punters less deserving than the overseas punter ?

Or is it just plain scrimping on behalf of the heads of the record companies in Australia ?

It always seems to happen when the band does a tour.

New tracks are a beloved tool of record companies whenever they release a "best of" compilation.

The bonus CD came as part of the original release of Retro. Retro was released a few years ago, so I'm very surprised to see the bonus CDs still available.

I can semi understand bands throwing a couple of new songs on a greatest hits package to spice it up .

Pretty sure Retro was only released in Australia last year , Rolling Stone Reviewed it mid last year , think it first came out in 2002 overseas . Mighty Wests copy is probably an import that has been sitting on a shelf for a while

BTW Shinboners , have not had " Live at the Paradiseo " out of stereo ........... in a word , sensational

Spot on, made in the EU, and it did look like it had been siiting on the shelf for a while although HMV Australia are still advertising the 5 disc set.

Which HMV ? i might wrap mine up and say a couple of the discs are faulty , pull a distressed face and say i lost my reciept , and can i swap it for a new one ..... reckon i could pull it off ?

Ceremony is a gem of a track - my fav by far. Actually was a JD track but wasnt quite finished before Ian's death

The Legend said:
One of their best ones imo. An early live version exists on the Still double album.

There's also a live version of Ceremony on the Retro cd, recorded in Barcelona in 84.

Hmmmm...Looks like I'll be buying that disc.

It's worth it.

I hadn't really listened to New Order for a long time, but after listening to Retro, I've gone back and listened to all their recordings. It's like bumping into an old friend again.

Do yourself a favour and ring around, places like HMV AND JB....
There may be able to grab a copy of the limited edition version with the bonus disc (quite rare with a few New Order gems).

That is exactly how i felt when i picked it up last year .... could not have summed it up better ...have you had a good thumb through the booklet yet ?

Fantastic collection of photo`s and stories behind the songs

I am absolutely drooling in anticipation of the new album

Yeah, I have. I've got a decent collection of New Order/Joy Division books, but I hadn't seen a lot of the photos in the Retro booklet before.

Great stories too. Incidentally, there's a bit where Bobby Gillespie talks about his experiences with New Order and he mentions being in a band called the Wake. As it turns out, I'm only 3 degrees of separation from Peter Hook - one of my best mates is a musician, and one of the key guys from the Wake (Caeser) got in touch with him about doing a musical project. As it turns out, Caeser is doing some sort of musical collaboration with Peter Hook!

By the way, if you like New Order, you'll like The Wake.

I have to say - after being a bit meh about it earlier in the thread, I'm pretty excited about it too.
