As an Obeid connection collects another scalp, it looks like Joyce might take on Windsor is his seat.

Don't know much abut NSW politics but do you have any sources that confirm Torbay resigned his candidacy due to Obeid connections? None of the mainstream media outlets give any explanation.

Will be an interesting battle (if it pans out) given the disdain they hold for each other, though I suspect even Joyce under the Nationals banner would beat him.

I don't know that the people of New England would take too kindly to a Queenslander going in to claim to represent them. It does appear tha the do dislike Windsor for backing the ALP though, and that he is likely to be shown the door no matter what. (Sadly in my view, as Windsor, Wilkie and Xenephon are about the only people in parliament I have any respect for - actually a lttle bit for Katter and Joyce as well, nutters noth of them, but at least they stand for their beliefs).

If Barnaby does move, would it open up the possibility of KAP claiming a Senate seat in Queensland?

Barnaby might be signing his own political death warrant. Is that good or bad, he wears his heart on his sleeve but gee he's a whinger.

I think it is related to the "troubles" in NSW. On the radio Barnaby would not comment, saying he knew absolutely nothing about why the removal of Torbay happened, so I'd say it has absolutely everything to do with it.

I believe Joyce or his family actually come from the New England region, so he wouldn't be a total blow-in

Plus I'm pretty sure polls were showing Windsor getting beaten by "generic National" even before Torbay became the candidate.

I think you're right. I had forgotten that bit about New England.
And, yes, polls were showing he would be kicked (fixing my numerous typos, "It does appear that they do dislike Windsor for backing the ALP though, and that he is likely to be shown the door no matter what.") That would be a great shame in my view.

Yeah, Joyce is a solid New England boy. Born in Tamworth, grew up in Woolbrook on a farm, boarding school in Sydney, university in Armidale and lived all around northern NSW for most of his career prior to politics.

His reinvention of himself as a true blue Queenslander is actually one of the more impressive achievements in politics.

Will be an interesting one, whilst he might have roots in New England will they forgive him for calling himself a canetoad though?

Windsor v Joyce would be one of the more... interesting battles of the 2013 Election. Windsor's numbers have always been much better than Oakeshott's, so, unlike our verbose friend, Windsor isn't automatically a "goner", but Joyce's... unique way of Politics will see him viewed as not just a puppet of the National Party, or any Party for that matter, and thus be a genuine contender. I'd back Joyce, but Windsor holding on is not entirely out of the question, particularly, as Relativity pointed out, Windsor's position on Coal Seam Gas will become a major local issue.

Joyce took another step today to run against Windsor for the Nats.

NATIONALS Senator Barnaby Joyce is a step closer to moving to the lower house of parliament in September.
The Queensland senator has been formally nominated as a candidate in the party's preselection for the House of Representatives seat of New England.
But his candidacy is not yet assured, with senior NSW Nationals Senator John Williams saying he expects at least one other person to contest the preselection.
That could be National Farmers' Federation president Jock Laurie or National Rural Advisory Council chairman Keith Perrett.
Nominations for the contest close on Tuesday evening and the preselection will be held in Tamworth on April 13.
Whoever wins will take on Independent MP Tony Windsor at the federal election on September 14.

Nationals sure have a chronic lack of talent.

Apparently the new talent is all running for Northern Tablelands in the state parliament.

THEY'RE young, smart, and a generation away from the National Party stereotype of stuffy old farmers.
Richard Torbay's spectacular exit from public life a fortnight ago has opened the gates for a new breed of country candidate clamouring to represent the Nationals in the Northern Tablelands.
Mr Torbay held the seat for 14 years as an independent, and the approaching by-election is the first time in as many years that the Nationals have any real chance of winning it.
Claire Coulton, 29, is the eldest of the two National Party members to throw their hat into the ring for preselection.
A former high school English teacher, Ms Coulton spent her youth on the land, riding horses every day on the family farm at Warialda.
Ms Coulton's father Mark is the federal Nationals MP for Parkes who has a long history in local government. Like her father, Ms Coulton has been involved with the party most of her life.
Her competition is Adam Marshall, 28. A young gun who was a local councillor at 19 and became Gunnedah mayor at 22, he has most recently worked with Mr Torbay on the federal campaign for New England.
