Why is it ok to bag bentley but not Russel?

You all swear at me in abbreivated letters for putting down Russel but you all "rofl" when i suggest Bentley (if he got Russels treatment his owed 50 more games to "show something"). Would love to see what you all say when Russel butchers the footy, no doubt all of you have been verabelly critical of him at games. "Yet he who has never sinned throw the first stone"

How are we bagging Russell because we would prefer him, who has been trained through the firsts, over a guy who has played one career game for the club?

I think you're being very hypocritical here, as you're the one laying crap on Russell (note the spelling) and then trying to tell us that we're bagging Bentley. Not sure if you caught the post-game threads, but most of us thought that Bentley performed well.

Where have you been for the past 4 years?

And I think the quote that you're looking for is "let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Consider checking before you post something in a quote.

Fair comments, but to "ROFL"(roll on the floor laughing) at a player being picked in the 22 would IMO be "bagging" him. Never said I don't get stuck into Russell, but it is hypocritial to say you can't put down players then laugh at Bentley. Not that you were the one to scoff at bentley EBIAC

Not that you were the one to scoff at bentley EBIAC and if Russell turns out to be a champ I will be the first to apologise. Hence how I set up a "Apologise to Wiggins" thread as I have read many posters having a go at him and have always defended him and thought he BOG performance may have converted a few.

From memory... JR has player 8 good games from the last 10 or so... Kangas and hawks being his only two down games... he seems to be following the Carlton gradient...

When we were bad... he was bad.... when we improved last year, he improved last year.... when we dominate 1 or 2 quarters of games and sleep for the other 2... jordan would do the same thing... he is a good player... don't think he isn't... it's all about confidence and consistancy... and while the carlton team will grow in confidence this year, consistantly play 4 quarters and win more games than the past few years, jordan will follow suit...

the flexibility to have another player where we can play in defence, middle or foward line is very underrated in today footy...

To be honest, we just won a game by 83 points against one of our most bitter rivals, and I know am going to games expecting to win nearly every week (which I haven't felt for years at this club) and it just seems though so petty and chursih, just to constantly dwell on the negatives or come a cropper as to usual 'suspects/whipping boys', although I have baggged JR many times in the past, to be fair, I think he played a serviceable/if unspectacular game on Thursday night, and should retain his spot in the side.

There is a disturbing trend i have noticed where some fans jsut really want JR to fail just to justify their own 'negative' agendas ..
Mind you I get sick as well of people bagging Carrots, even though he gets over 30 possies each week, and his disposal is improving.
You just can't please some people.

The "rofl" at your suggestion that bentley is a better option than JR is more than justified, especially when one of your major criticisms of JR is his disposal accuracy. That, in fact, is the major flaw in Bentley's game.

The "rofl" was not at the suggestion that Bentley is a first-22 player.

Get it now ?

The problem that I have with Russell is his decision making. I agree that yes; he "has a crack" each week, but when he has the ball, especially around traffic, he just panics, blazes away, or makes a poor decision more often than not.

Whilst in the past we have needed players such as JR for depth, those years are rapidly coming to an end. If we are to move forward we need to take emotion out of our minds and base our opinions on facts, and the fact is that JR is a long way from our best 22 when everyone is fit, and as I originally stated, unless he improves significantly this year (which I sincerely hope he does, coz he seems like a good kid), then he's up for trade.

I have no vendetta against him, nor am I bashing him for no good reason. I'm just calling it as I see it.

I feel Russell has been played in many games when he hasn't deserved to just because he was a high pick and our team was crap. None of this is JRs fault, I mean if Carlton took me with a top 10 pick and continued to pick me even if I wasn't pulling my weight most weeks I still rock up for the games.

Anyway everyone knows my feelings on JR and I didn't think his game was that bad on the weekend, though I didn't think it was that good. You must keep in mind we won by 83 points and its pretty hard to play a shocker in those circumstances. I am blue through and through and just want the team to win. I DO NOT EVER WISH FOR JR CLANGERS JUST TO PROVE MYSELF CORRECT ON BF:rolleyes:.

If JR begins to play good consistant footy that is worthy of being in the 22 I will be the first to admitt I was wrong......maybe after some mild prompting ;)

Clearly you won't be - he's been playing pretty consistent, solid footy for the last 15 or so rounds. It's just that you haven't noticed.

Unless you're at the games and a reasonably astute judge it's easy to think that it's all about stats and highlight reels, but there's a lot you don't see on tv thatis still counted as productive by the people that matter, and JR's been doing it.

How many of those games have you been at Jezza? Frequent flyer?

It's pretty easy to find mistake's from a player when that's what you're looking for

Spot on FNM, I admit I've not been a huge wrap for JR, I'm still not 100% sold but I'm willing to back Ratts and the selection committee on their decisions. The poor guy has to work doubly hard to win over some supporters because they're waiting for him to stuff up when almost everyone else gets chance upon chance.
I was stoked to see him with a big grin on his face when he kicked that great goal on Thursday.

I'm guessing about 8 JNB - obviously i get to every game at AAMI (2 a year), and I fly or drive across to Vic. about 6 times a year.

Was there last thurs (and thought JR was solid), and have flights booked already for the saints and pies games. Normally get over for Blues vs Bombers games but there's birthdays in the way this year. Unfortunately they don't look like making the finals, so i might just have to settle for watching us beat them on the teev this year...

BTW if Jordan Russell was delisted by the club at the end of the year, he would be certainly snapped up by another club no doubt about it (IE esp with one of the other SA clubs)

He is 22, played 50 games and was a top 10 draft pick, a lot of other clubs would take a punt with someone like JR.

His kicking does let him down a bit, but hopefully once he builds up more confidence, that improvment in his game, can be slow, but gradual ..
Magnificent users/kicks of the ball like Judd and Bryce Gibbs are actually quite rare, there are more players in the league with disposal/kicking effiency of JR then Gibbs or Judd (IMHO)

Case in point, look at the shit Richmond served up last thursday night (and a lot of those players in that squad are serial offenders IE Tambling and Jordy Mcmahon)

Another week where the couch coaches got it wrong again. Another week where the carping, whining, fault finding moaners got it wrong again.

After such a magnificent win I thought we would get a break from this constant bashing that goes on here. But sadly I was mistaken.

Our soft, panic ridden fans that worry at the first sign of pressure from a decent opponent, that dont have the footy smarts to know when a player is playing well and to the coaches satisfaction, fans that take the easy option rather than do the work and find out what the real strory is rather than follow the crowd, have raised there weak, squib hearted heads again. Dont you know that other fans, willing to stick fat have gone past you. There is no place in our top 40000 members for you and you will soon be culled. I doubt you would be welcomed by other teams either, well perhaps the tigers.

And for those of you not skilled in sarcasm, the above paragraph is a piss take on some of the comments that some posters on here level at JR.

It must come as quite a shock to be wrong for yet another week. But you keep it up, sooner or later you will be proven right, sooner or later all players careers come to an end and I have no doubt now that you will keep this sort of thread up until JR's is up.

Another flawless spray from the 30Man. Gape at the impeccable formatting, laud the perfect spelling, bow deeply and appreciatively at the god-like usage of grammar. The man deserves his own religion.

I will be follower No 1 - if chosen. And when he rests on the seventh day, should there be no game, I shall surely and gratefully recharge his laptop, clean his screen, defrag his hard-drive and update his anti-virus signatures. Greatness has come unto us. Yeah, even to those deemed unworthy. :thumbsu:

Actually I am quite disappointed that I missed a ? at the end of the willing to stick fat sentence. And I wondered aloud if the correct spelling there would be phat?

As penance I think an hour reading the thesaurus would not be deemed to harsh in this day and age. :p

Could be the match winner this week.

With an underdone Black coming in the Lions will need Johnstone to fire up. If Russ can blanket him as per round 21 last year then it will go a long way to helping us win the game IMO.

BTW, am I the only one who thinks Russ' field kicking has improved this year? Starting to drill some nice stab passes...........he has got about 10% better each year under Ratts.........in 5 years he will be a gun! :D

Well, apart from this "...have raised there weak, squib hearted heads again." No disrespect 30 Man, loved your post.

This is exactly what I have been talking about for a while now. He played well against the Tigers and the only problem I had was a look away handball which missed the target by a mile. But otherwise he wasn't bad nor was he great.

I guess when it comes to JR there are 3 types of supporters.

1) Only see the good in him because he is playing for Carlton and if that's the case then he must be good.

2) Stuffs up all the time, he's rubbish and should be sacked on the spot.

3) Can sometimes do something good and sometimes something horrible. Believe that to improve as a group either he needs to get better or give someone else a go. Average player.

I remember a time when Carlton were very quick at swinging the axe. Our recent decline has changed that philosophy, however as we improve and our depth increases individuals also have to improve or they will be passed. Basically the way I see it is that if Russell doesn't improve and is still getting a game then we will never win a premiership. There is no doubt that our best players are good enough but our worst when compared to Geelong or Hawthorn are just not up to standard... yet... hopefully.

And to say "well he played 20 something games last year he must be good" is just wrong. Where did we finish on the ladder? If we want to move up higher then we need to improve as individuals and a team or get better players to replace those that don't. Having said that to judge him on this one game will not help. For starters we did win by 83 points hardly a challenge to play well against such bad opposition.
