Eagles coach Ken Judge remains at the helm after last nights board meeting, though the club still have not guaranteed anything
past Sunday. Meanwhile Captain Ben Cousins has asked the media and public to lay off in the interests of the team.
After the ninety minute meeting, the Eagles heirarchy were sticking to the tried
and trusted "Ken is contracted for next year" line, and claiming that his position
as coach was not even discussed.
However, the "all positions will be reviewed at the end of the season" line is
also still going strong.
Eagles captain Ben Cousins has said that the constant speculation was having
a destabilising effect on the team, as people focussed on Judge's future rather
than on who we are playing this weekend. Notably, Cousins made no
statement of support for Judge, but only asked that everyone wait until the
season is over before speculating about positions at the club.
It is interesting that Cousins should feel that the coaching issue is having a
detrimental effect on the team, as the Eagles performance has been generally
better in the second half of the season, since the pressure went on Judge.
In the first half of the season, they won two of eleven games, with a percentage
of just 61. Since then they have won three of ten with a percentage of 77 - not
brilliant, but certainly better.
Perhaps a little public pressure is not such a bad thing.
