Premier Denis Napthine and Minister for Sport Damian Drum last week gave the AFL the green light to explore the potential establishment of a co-tenancy arrangement at the historic St Kilda ground between the Saints and Cricket Victoria.

Not only did Napthine signal his determination to resolve Cricket Victoria’s contractual stranglehold over the MCG and its inability to find funding for a new home, but the government was also prepared to entertain the prospect of housing St Kilda’s Linen House Centre at Seaford with new tenants.

The move would make the MCG available for AFL games throughout March, fast-track the establishment of a state-of-the-art facility for cricket, and wrest St Kilda from its problematic new Seaford home.

So there's this about the Sainters and Cricket Victoria moving in together, which seems something that'll benefit all parties including the AFL (and Richmond. And Carlton) so it'd obviously be cool to see. Frankston just hasn't worked out too well for the club. Plus it'd be romantically refreshing to see a club actually go back to its home, as opposed to getting up and leaving.

Anyway, this thread should probably also exist in the way the Vic Park and Etihad ones do – just a general overview. So yeah. How's the Junction?

If St Kilda were to get into bed with CV, what would happen RE pre-season training? Would they just do that at Moorabbin? The whole idea of redeveloping the Junction was to give cricket their own exclusive facility so that football could have their own.

Answer is in the article.....

The government has agreed to broker a proposed scenario that would transform the facility into two separate ovals - one for football and one for cricket - with St Kilda and Cricket Victoria housing their administrative offices alongside the grounds and sharing other training facilities, such as a swimming pool and gymnasium.

Wonder if they could get it to hold say 20k and then use it for the small clubs vs interstate teams. Might drag a few away fans in as they could make a night of it in st Kilda. Public transport is pretty good to the junction oval as well

The sooner the Saints leave the backblocks of Seaford the better.
They should never have left Moorabbin but now have a chance to go back to their real roots and home at the Junction Oval.

To me everyones a winner here Cricket ,The AFL ,The MCG and St Kilda Footy club and being an election year this is the time to screw money out of an desperate Napthine government looking to show that they are actually doing something.

I went there last year and I would be surprised if the space could be found to do something like that. I would be surprised if they could even build a state of the art training complex there because lets not forget that Melbourne went running away from the Junction Oval a few years back because they were being left behind regarding training facilities. I assume redeveloping at the Junction wasn't seen to be viable, happy to be corrected.

If this idea does go through, how much in total will the saints have reamed the taxpayer? Broken a lease on brand new facilities at Seaford after only 4 years, 20 odd years early and then putting their hand out for even more government funding. All over just 80 pokie machines.

Here are some pictures I took last year.

Not sure how it would work with Cricket Vic... one of the issues Essendon had at Windy Hill when the cricket club were there was the centre square was roped off all year long due to the wickets... of course a huge part of footy these days is the full ground zone etc, virtaully impossible to train for with a cricket tenant.

I'm pretty surprised that AFL hasn't got plans for a smaller boutique stadium, you'd think it would a priority to actually own two stadium in Victoria to ensure all Vic clubs get the best possible stadium deals.

Punt road or Gosch's paddock would probably be the best location wise for smaller boutique stadium.

the site at punt road is to small, & gosch paddock would have been great but eddie get his way and moved collingwood there

as nice as the idea of a boutique stadium is by the time it was approved and built, hundred's of millions would have been spend, for nothing as
the afl will own etihad in a number of years, so they can give any stadium deal they want to the smaller clubs then.

I too am left wondering where they could find space for two ovals on that site. Unless land is acquired or purchased.
one of the levels of government have approved a 8 or 9 million dollar grant to stkilda to upgrade morabbin oval so the chances of them returning to junction oval is next to stuff all. the only chance now of the junction oval being upgraded is when cricket Victoria are able to come up with the funds

Definitely not the case. The money to fix Moorabbin up (and I say 'fix' deliberately) has no intention of us moving back there. It's simply to create a bit of a community hub, have lower leagues administration (SFL and SMJFL) as well as potentially hosting Sandy Dragons TAC Cup team and St Kilda VFL games once we get a side up.

so they stay at seaford then?
they used millions of tax payer money, will me using millions to up grade Morabbin.
so they receive another several million to move back to the junction?
the club only has them self to blame the the mess they are in

I find it bizarre their Seaford training base only has one oval. Did they only move there because the City of Frankston offered the most money?
There is actually a second oval at the back of the training facility behind the Seaford CC ground. Not sure how often they use it though.

Lack of self awareness in that post from an Essendon supporter.

how so?
Essendons mess has nothing to do with this topic
the mess they are in is their their own fault and currently fighting it out in court.

so its ok for stkilda to keep reeming the tax payer to continue to fund new training and admin facilities until l they finally find a place they like?

Essendon receiving no govt money for tullamarine facility? Stand to be corrected.

All for it if its done right.

If its done wrong. NO.

The only faith I have in that direction is that Gill McLachlan, the AFL CEO, is a Saints supporter, so presumably he won't want to screw them over and won't let it happen.

did did receive some but funded most of the facilty them self.

its not the fact stkilda are recieving government money its.

they in the loast 10 odd years move from moorabbin to seaford. build a training & admin base there with tax payer money
government is going to spend more money on moorabbin to turn it in to a community hub & stkilda announce they are moving back there
now more money is made available for the junction oval.

just find a place, build what ever you need and stay there.

I hope the junction oval has grass areas / a real outdoorsy vibe for watching cricket. Given its location it could be a really awesome place to watch domestic cricket on a sunny weekend.

We aren't moving back to Moorabbin, our VFL team will be based out of there.

We aren't the ones pushing for the JO development, but if the club thinks that it is a better deal than Seaford then there is no reason we shouldn't move. No club would turn down an option to improve their situation.
