At the start of the year after an MCG game I was stopped at the lights lights near Hoddle street. This woman who was I would say late 40's but well dressed looked very distressed and was knocking on car windows.
I don't normally do it, but I decided to roll down my window to see what she wanted. She said "please do you have some change, someone stole my wallet and I need to get to my son in Sorrento" I was a little sceptical but I decided to give her a couple of dollars because I would hate to ignore someone in a "real" situation.
As soon as I drove off I wondered whether I did the right thing.
Then the next week I was coming out of a game and there she was again. I saw people rolling down there windows to give her money and I started yelling at them that it was a scam. They either didn't hear me or just decided to ignore me.
I hadn't seen her for a while so I thought the police might be on to her, but there she was again, waiting for the football crowd to come out again last week.
Really she should at least switch intersections because she's is cycling the same cars every week.
You would never have picked her for a junkie though. Some people have no shame.
Has anyone else seen her?

I go down there a bit to the computer shop and there are a few very odd people going round.
This i need to get to such and such is giving me the ****s i am sick of it and it is so lame. Someone on the platform told me this one day so i put on the very good Spidey is so concerned act and said "oh i'm sure if you go up to the v/line ticket window they will help you out and get you home safely" sure enough moved on to the next peson with the sob story!
Some homeless guy at Flinders street (who was collecting loose change from wherever he could find it on the platform) gave me 50 cents, when I desperately needed to phone home to get somebody to pick me up from st albans after the last train. I'd dropped the only change I had, and this was before I had a mobile phone. Restores your faith in humanity when someone does something like that.

As a social worker, that works with the homeless, alcoholics and Drug addicts in Melb. I recommend that you do not give any money to beggars. There are plenty of places that they can go to for food, clothing, accommodation, travel asistance etc. Street people know these services exist and they access them as they need them. Do not waste your breath abusing them as it creates an unneccessary scene. Simply politly say Sorry mate I don't have change and continue on. If they stand in your way simply walk around them. Most beggars know the 'rules' and will move on to the next prospect.

That's what I do, once I was asked by a guy in King William Street for some money, he said he was hungry, etc. So I offered to buy him a pie from a nearby deli and he was stoked. He wolfed it down, apparently he hadn't eaten for a couple of days. If they refuse food when offered then they are not kosher.

I offer to buy them food, always get a reply that they want the money not food, end of story they get nothing.
If people ask for a ciggie, answer is always no, if you have to live on the street, you can't afford to smoke.
One guy lent in my open car window & asked for a smoke, told him no, because they are too expensive & I can't afford to give them away, prick spat through the window & threatened to punch me out, went into the nearest shop, rang the cops who turned up & took the moron off to jail.
Want to smoke, then get a job & buy them yourself, I work hard so I can afford my addiction.

The other thing that annoys me are the bums who hassle you at lights for a window wash......I usually say Ive only got 50 cents before they start and they then decide if its worth it....
Otherwise light turns green, you hurry them up and they crack the **** and break off your wiper...

I don't drive but my parent's usually just say 'here's a buck, take it, just don't touch the care' and they move on happily and you don't have to deal with giving someone the ****'s and have them ruin your car or something.
On giving people money, I think it depends on the situation. As most people said, if you offer to buy em lunch or a cheapish shirt, they'll refuse.
For those who live in Sydney and work or go to the CBD area, there is one homeless lady that sits outside David Jones and seemingly hasn't moved for about 3 years.
And the other guy that cuts you deep everytime you walk past, is a guy who would be about 60, in a wheelchair, playing a glockenspiel (the little xylophones) that has only about 10 key's on it and looks like it was a present for a 3 year old during the 80's at some point. And he sit's there just playing this mangled glockenspiel with absolutely no tune or rythym watsoever, but everytime he hits the thing it makes a high pitched noise that just cuts right deep inside you. The only time that a homeless person has really got to me.
If you walk around the CBD and paritcularly Centre Point Tower often enough you'll see both of them eventually.
A happy story indeed, but i still wouldn't give money to a homeless man. If it was a situation like yours and you looked 'honest' i would give it to you, or allow the use of my mobile as did happen when i was on a bus lasttime. Buskers, at the shops, maybe, but not the homeless.
you cant get away from these ferals who just dont leave u alone, they even dared to knock on our car window while we were sitting at the lights, trying to bum a smoke. too bad no one in our family is stupid enough to smoke.

Ive only once or twice had someone asking me for money, but I get asked for smokes all the time. One time while walking through Midland to Maccas me and my friends got followed by a guy who wanted some money and or a smoke. I refused to give him either (I don't smoke) so he elbowed me in the chin, I ended up with a cut mouth and a broken hand by the end of the fiasco. The problem with that is they weren't bums or beggars, just looking to cause trouble.
That experience has made me very wary of people asking for money on the streets, so now a days I just walk by without paying any attention.

My policy on giving money to beggers is to tell them to go and see an organised charity service that helps street people. I donate plenty of money on a weekly basis to charities like St Vinnies and The Salvation Army. If they really do need money for food, clothing, bedding etc then they can goto these organisations as that's who I give my money to. If they are legit then hopefully the will go and see these charitys otherwise they will probably just move onto the next person.
