Cant believe some of you guys on this site we werent that bad.For starters that was the best nab match by far have a look at richmond.We hit the post 6 times didnt have mark johnson ,jason johnson,mcphee,campo,dyson and heff.I must say our 1st half was terrible but did kick 1goal 5in the 1st quarter.LLOYD first game in a year and 9 of the players were underdone.We were a lot quicker stanton and watson have to kick better and bradley will not get a game when mcphee comes back.just relax what do u guys think
 
We are capable of a lot better and will show it at times during the year, obvioulsy consistency is the key with this young group.

Just need to stop f*cking around with it and get it quickly to the tall players in the F50. It will play to our strengths and eliminate the need for poor disposals from the midfield.

As i stated in another thread, individually...some improved and have developed nicely. As a team, nothing I saw last night gave me any confidence for the season ahead.

Maybe a lot of people got too far in front of temselves.;) I havnt held any expectations of making the 8 so despit hating losing to Carlton you could say the loss hasnt been such a surprise or an annoyance (apart from the ordinary turnovers).
People have to consider that to win 10 games this year we have to improve by 6 1/2 wins on last year. It is doubtfull that Gumby,Jetta,Hislop,Houli and co will make a huge difference this year so we are pretty much left with the same guys plus Davey (who i think showed he is ready last night) to get us there.
To be honest if we win 10 games, the young blokes continue to show something and some of the older guys have been pushed back to Bendigo by the end of the year i think we will have done well.

What I cant grasp is I dont want to believe we are that bad. On paper, we look like a complete outfit with hard workers in the middle, top line backs and a very dangerous forward line. Yet, we keep dishing it up to the opposition when the pace of the game increases and quick decisions need to be made. Not incinuating its easy, but they're paid professionals who are picked for being amongst the best in the country in that role.

Actually enjoyed last nights game. Played at a good pace, though with simple skill errors. But its the 1st real hitout. I Liked what i saw in Monfries again, boy is he gonna be a beauty. Jobe looks real composed, but whats with his kicking? Good to see you have injected a tishload of pace into your side. As a whole, i think e will both worry a few sides this year. In the end this is only a practice match,though they are probably slashing their wrists on the tiggers board

Well sometimes you have to belive in reality because games are not played on paper. The reality is turnovers have killed us for 4 seasons now and until players like Monfries,Nash,Dempsey and Dyson step up further we will continue to have the problem.
We have been a bit lazy in the past in areas like providing run , tackling and shepherding which looks like it is on the improve but it needs to continue going that way.
 
its only a practice match excuse rules its self out when your actually out there and trying to win with a strong team picked. there was no way we were tanking.

we may have tried a few things and played players in different positions and not all worked. winderlich and welsh up forward did not work and bradley on a wing was a experiment which is worth persuing for now.

the inclusion of the johnsons and mcphee will help. dyson needs to come back into the team. even though he may not get it as much as he should he does have great foot skills which can be used for better delivery into the forward line.

as for heffernan and campo being in our best 22 i am not so sure.
peverill should not get a game again unless we are injury riddled in the middle or of need for a bigger bodied player to win the ball. if the johnsons or heffernan were playing i am sure he wouldnt have been.

Where was mark bolton?
I have it on good authority that he was under sheeds desk securing his spot in the team for round 1 ;)
 
You can only go on what is before you and last night was very disappointing. Just lately (last 4-5 years) we only seem to beat carlton when there is nothing left in a season, they always seem to beat us when it counts, when we`re too ********ing cocky, when both our seasons are "alive". We seem to do ok in the "dead rubber"
Now I know it was "just a nab cup game" but we had set ourselves for this as we did last year v The Lions and we ********ed up, disappointing.
(On a side note, did anyone see the bay of supporters go ********ing ballistic every time Bachar got the pill, he has one large family that boy)
 
I've never been so upset over losing a stupid pre-season game as I was last night. We clearly tried to win and we still played like Carlton.

And on top of the loss we have to travel to Perth next week to lose half our team to injury.

We are starting to sound like whingers. It's a practice match. It'll be ok. I'd be happy personally if we got to 9th - 10th this year. We're forgetting that we cam 15th last season and this sort of change doesn't happen over night. How many personnel changes has our team gone through over the last 3 years? The number of recycled players would be in the 20's!

I do Brazilian Jiu Jistsu, while that fact isn't that relevant to Essendon's list, it does remind me of a parallel I see with posters here and in my training.

We get new students in all the time and one of the most common traits I see about them is their impatience when learning techniques. It's a complicated sport and even the simplest moves take a while to learn. The most common mistake people make in the beginning is to go straight for the goal. You know where you start, you know where you want to finish so lets ignore the ******** in between and go straight to the end, never works, and you get the ******** beaten out of you. The problem is that the bits in the middle is the method in which you achieve your goal.

Now I'm not saying anyone here is acting like a newbie, and I'm not saying I'm more knowledgeable about football then anyone here (because I'd say I'm at the lower end of the football knowledge food chain given what I've read over these past months on BF) but the sort of talk on this board over the week does strike me as a bit of doom and gloomism. The Essendon football club is in a stronger position now than this time last year. Our list has the potential to be premiership material with the correct management in the future. And we have the off field drive, management and supporter base to make the on field stuff continue to work.

Don't expect the world to just fall at our feet. Don't expect exciting kids to play like seasoned pro's after 10 games, enjoy watching their development into great footballers. Get exited about the positives, lets not act like a bunch of Richmond supporters ;). Buy a membership if you haven't already. And don't ignore the road that must be taken, because you only get to the end if you do the bits in-between that must be done.
