This forum has covered three drafts, 2003, 2004 and 2005 drafts.

In each, there were claims that became completely false.

In 2003, Kepler Bradley was a KPP that could tear games apart, Kane Tenace was Judd's heir apparent and Sylvia was better, alot better than McLean and Walker was the next Kouta and Rafael Clarke was a star in the making.

In 2004, Tambling at pick 4 was a huge steal and Hawthorn made many, many mistakes picking Roughead, Fraklin and Lewis. Apparently, it was clear that Richmond did the best. Meyer was supposed to be better than Monfires. Polo was a player who couldn't kick because f his "ungainly" kicking action.

In 2005, Pendelbury was nowhere worthy of pick 5, and Thomas was a mistake. Pendlebury looks the goods while Thomas has been a revelation.

As vinnie would say, a little perspective never hurt anyone. Just remember that when you start bagging potential draftees and telling everyone that this will be the definite top 20, 10, 25 50 etc. many things can and will change. If someone tells you that player X will be picked in the top ten instead of 20 plus as usual, remember that many people thought that McLean was going to be picked up at 19ish.

I remember the talk about polo and thought to myself im glad we didnt pick up this bloke and than a bit later when i finally saw him play i nearly schit myself, it couldnt be the same player surely, i thought he couldnt kick..

How can people get it so wrong, anyway its best to ignore the crap on forums and wait until draft day and see who your club picks-up.

I find when i read forums and hear about a certain player i start wanting that player and only get dispointed when my side overlooks them.

I would have never thought thomas and pendlebury would be picked up and i doubt anyone on any forum would have had either in their top 6 picks.

Too many know it alls and rank amatuers on forums.

The problem mostly lies with the fact that the vast majority of posters on here who criticise young draftees, have never seem them play.

spot on mate! these afl clubs have been watching these boys plays since they were 15 or 16 and it is not necessarilly how good they are that gets them picked but rather how much they have improved over that time. Improvement shows a genuine love of the game and proves how much they want to make it in the big time. One mark, or one game or even one season doesnt make or break a player.

It's fine when learned people comment on the draft, but when you have every poster who can type giving their opinon, it gets a little irritating.

And even so called "experts" can't get it right. Last year, Burgan accurately picked 5 out of 70 draftee's positions, one of those was Murphy at no. 1, which everyone got. So what hope do we have?

You forgot all the crap written about Birchall as well.

that's a misleading use of that stat - 5 out of 70 in position is actally a pretty good effort given the number of permutations involved

a more useful stat might be to see how many he picked in brackets e.g. 1st rounders, 2nd rounders etc

Of course no one on here really has any idea but the draft is something that lets fans get a grasp on what the future could hold, and builds hope within supporters, so let them talk about who they think their club should recruit or whatever. It is what sports are all about.

It is nice when you follow a player from pre-draft day, read all the reports and watch them develop.

I've done that since the Pav / Hase draft and my latest favourite I've followed has been Murphy (apparently at the time Fergus Watts was the 'better' pick). It's fun to read the speculation pre-draft but most people (including myself) have no idea.
